Practical-2
AIM: Identify Common Ports, Associated Cable and Connectors.
Observe various Connectors, Ports, Front and Back Side of Computer.
Write their Purpose and Specifications.

❖ Ports:

• In computer hardware, a port serves as an interface between the computer and other computers
or peripheral devices. In computer terms, a port generally refers to the part of a computing
device available for connection to peripherals such as input and output devices.
• Physical ports:

1. Serial Port

• In computing, a serial port is a serial communication interface through which information

transfers in or out sequentially one bit at a time. This is in contrast to a parallel port, which
communicates multiple bits simultaneously in parallel.
▪ Used for external modems and older computers mouse. ▪
Two versions: 9pin ,25 pin model.

2. Parallel Port

• Less commonly referred to as the Centronics interface, Centronics connector, or Centronics

port after the company that originally designed it, the port was later developed by Epson. The
parallel port is found on the back of IBM compatible computers and is a 25-pin (type DB-25)
computer interface commonly used to connect printers to the computer.
• Used for the scanners and printers.
• Also called printer port.
• 25 pin model.
• Also, knowns as IEEE 1284-complaint Centronics port.

3. PS/2 PORT

• The PS/2 (Personal System/2) port, also referred to as the mouse port or keyboard port, was
developed by IBM.
• It is used to connect a computer mouse or keyboard to an IBM compatible computer.
• The PS/2 port is a mini DIN plug containing six pins and is still sometimes found on all IBM
compatible computers.
o Used for old computers keyboard and mouse.

o Also called as mouse port.

o Most of old computers provide two PS\2 ports, each for mouse and keyboard.

4. Universal Serial Bus Port

• Stands for "Universal Serial Bus." USB is the most common type of computer port used in
today's computers. It can be used to connect keyboards, mice, game controllers, printers,
scanners, digital cameras, and removable media drives, just to name a few.
• Can connect all kinds of external USB devices such as external hard disk, printer, scanner,
mouse, keyboard etc.
• Most of the computers provide two USB ports as minimum.

5. VGA Port

• The Video Graphics Array (VGA) connector is a standard connector used for computer video
output. Originating with the 1987 IBM PS/2 and its VGA graphics system, the 15-pin
connector went on to become ubiquitous on PCs, as well as many monitors, projectors and
high-definition television sets.
▪ Connect monitor to a computer’s video card. ▪
Has 15 holes.

6. Fire wire Port

• FireWire, also called IEEE 1394 or I Link, high-speed computer data-transfer interface used
to connect personal computers, audio and video devices, and other professional and consumer
electronics.
• Transfer large amount of data at very fast speed.
• Connect camcorders and video equipment to the computers.
• Data travels at 400 to 800 megabits per second
• Three variants: 4pin fire wire 400 connectors.6 pin fire wire 400 connector and 9 pin fire
wire 800 connector.

7. Modem

• Modem is short for "Modulator-Demodulator." It is a hardware component that allows a

computer or another device, such as a router or switch, to connect to the Internet. Similarly, it
converts digital data from a computer or other device into an analog signal that can be sent
over standard telephone lines.
▪ Connects a PC modem to telephone network.

8. Ethernet Port

• An Ethernet port (also called a jack or socket) is an opening on computer network equipment
that Ethernet cables plug into. Their purpose is to connect wired network hardware in an
Ethernet LAN, metropolitan area network (MAN), or wide area network (WAN).
• Connects to a network and high-speed internet.
• Connects network cable to a computer.
• This port resides on an Ethernet card.
• Data travels at 10 megabits to 1000 megabits per second depending upon the network
bandwidth.

9. Game Port

• Console Port is a game that was originally made for a console (such as Wii or Xbox 360) before
an identical version is created which can be played on a personal computer or any other
console. This term has been widely used by the gaming community.

▪ Connect a PC to a joystick. ▪ Now

replaced by USB.

10. Digital Video Interface (DVI) Port

• DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface and offers a distinctly sharper, better picture than
VGA.
• It's a unique connector because it can carry both digital and analogue signals.
• DVI can also easily convert to other standards like HDMI and VGA connects a flat panel LCD
monitor to the computer high end video graphic cards.

11. Sound Port

• A computer's audio ports link the computer's sound hardware with your speakers, microphone,
headsets or other audio equipment.
• Every computer motherboard has at least a few basic audio ports built in, allowing you to
connect stereo speakers and a microphone.
▪ Connect microphone, speakers to sound card of the computer.
