ACTIVITY TASK SHEET No. 6

Learning Competencies:
1. Select relevant literature (CS_RS12-If-j-1)
2. follow ethical standards in writing related literature (CS_RS12-If-j-5)

Name of Student: _BAMBICO, ERNEST JULIAN B._ Grade and Section: 12-ST. AGATHA

A. Selecting Related Literature

In any research, it is important to always have related information/evidences that would help support your
claims. The purpose of this practice is to not only reinforce your claims or hypothesis about your research, but
also to establish your credibility as a researcher in a way that you have thoroughly conducted research in
gathering relevant information that would prove noteworthy for strengthening your study.

A literature review is a written summary of journal articles, books, and other documents that describes
the past and current state of information on the topic of your research study; it is also seen as the
examination of relevant books, scholarly articles, and any other sources pertinent to an area on research.
Conducting a review of related literature also allows the researcher to organize the literature into subtopics,
and documents the need for a proposed study.

B. Why Conduct A Review of Related Literature?

When conducting a research study, a researcher must always be aware of the purpose of reviewing a
literature.
1. It builds the confidence of the researcher as he/she fully understands the variables being studied.
2. It shows similar studies conducted which, in turn, become the springboard of discussion as the
researcher may agree or disagree with the current results.
3. Fellow researchers will see the objectivity of the study as they read a review of literature and related
sources similar in research or conceptual framework.
4. Reviewing a body of literature on the topic makes the research study empirical.

C. Steps in Conducting a Review of Related Literature

Although conducting a literature review follows no prescribed path, if you plan to design and conduct a
study, you will typically go through five interrelated steps. Learning all five steps will provide a sense of how
researchers proceed in reviewing the literature. These steps are:
1. Identify key terms to use in your search for literature.
2. Locate literature about a topic by consulting several types of materials and databases, including
those available at an academic library and on the Internet.

3. Critically evaluate and select the literature for your review.

4. Organize the literature you have selected by abstracting or taking notes on the literature and
developing a visual diagram of it.
5. Write a literature review that reports summaries of the literature for inclusion in your research
report.

Read and analyze the following statements. From there, provide the necessary answer based on the
following choices:

A. Statement I is correct, statement II is incorrect.

B. Statement I is incorrect, statement II is correct.
C. Statements I and II are incorrect.
D. Statements I and II are correct.

__D__ 1. (I)Writing a review of related literature is needed to provide support to a research study. (II)A
researcher may use any source as long as the information is related to the topic.

__B__ 2. (I)A review of related literature is composed of different information taken from different sources
randomly combined together. (II)A synthesis is needed in order to ensure that the ideas presented are
properly discussed and supports claims presented in the study.

__D__ 3. (I)When writing a related literature, it is necessary to cite the original author or source of the
information. (II)Citing allows the researcher to give credit to the author and avoid plagiarism.

__B__ 4. (I)When a researcher paraphrases or summarizes an idea, a citation is no longer necessary. (II)On
the other hand, a direct quotation requires that the author/ writer be directly credited.

__D__ 5. (I)A related literature is considered as the basis for how the researcher is able to come up with the
background of the study and its rationale. (II)It also serves as basis for formulating research questions and
hypothesis.

__D__ 6. (I)Writing the related literature allows the researcher to learn from other researchers in terms of
their ideas towards a common issue/topic. (II)This also allows the researcher to determine or locate his
research in the context of an existing literature.

__C__ 7. (I)Having a related literature is not that necessary as long as the researcher is able to present ideas
in a logical manner. (II)In addition, a researcher may opt to disregard his sources as long as the ideas
presented are explained using his own words.

__C__ 8. (I)Having a review of related literature helps a researcher to follow exactly how the previous
research has been conducted. (II)This allows the researcher to come up with a duplicate of the research
output to confirm any existing claims.

__A__ 9. (I)Reading relevant literature allows researchers to identify any possible gaps that exist in the
literatures. (II)Writing the review of related literature alone is enough for a researcher to come up with
answers to his research questions.

__B__ 10. (I)Reading related literature is done only after a researcher is able to come up with a research
problem and questions. (II)Through reading related literature, a researcher can determine how his research
may be supported by the findings of other researchers.

D. The Role of Related Literature

Since this subject is a continuation of Research in Daily Life 1 (Qualitative Research), it is expected that
you already have an idea on the role of the Review of Related Literature in research studies. With this in mind,
please provide a brief discussion on the importance and role of having related literature when conducting
research.

Writing a review of related literature has a very important role in conducting a research or study because
it allows the researchers to be credible by exploring different studies and evidences that will support their
topic and focus. It is very important in a research paper because it serves as the building block and
supplier of the ideas in creating possible problem, research questions and hypothesis in the study and it is
the basis of theoretical framework of the study. Review of related literature gives the study main
foundation because it provides trusted sources that will hold and support the claim of an idea or
statement.

E. Searching for Relevant Literature

As what has been previously mentioned, the purpose of having a review of related literature is to provide
support to a certain claim/argument that is presented in a specific research study. With this in mind, refer to
the following research topics and claims given below.

Look for two relevant studies that would support/counter the claims indicated. Fill out the information
being asked. (Note: include a copy of the source material where you have taken the information
when submitting)
