Many people worry about the dangers that nuclear power plants pose for people and the environment. Nuclear
power systems are designed to include many safety features, and almost all nuclear power plants work safely and
efficiently. But natural disasters can happen.
One of the world’s most recent and serious nuclear disasters occurred at a power plant in Fukushima, Japan. On
March 11, 2011, several nuclear reactors at the Fukushima plant were damaged by a massive 8.9-magnitude
earthquake and a huge 33-foot-high tsunami. After the earthquake struck, the reactor’s cooling system lost power.
When the cooling system failed, pressure in the reactor kept on rising, and radiation inside the plant rose to 1,000
times its normal level. The destroyed reactors were flooded with seawater in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent a
nuclear meltdown.
Newspapers reported that approximately 160 people were exposed to radiation, and that three plant workers
suffered from full radiation sickness. Over 200,000 people had to be evacuated from the area surrounding the
site. Radiation from the nuclear plant even spread north and west toward the West Coast of the United States. It
was detected by scientists in Sacramento, California, ten days later.
Fifty Fukushima plant workers remained on-site at the nuclear reactor after 750 other workers were evacuated.
The jobs of these remaining workers were to prevent fires, keep the nuclear core cool with seawater, and install
new power lines. These brave workers were limited to working in blocks of 15 minutes in high-radiation areas. All
the workers wore special suits and masks to keep them as safe as possible.
1. T F Most nuclear power plants work safely and efficiently.
2. T F Only one reactor was damaged in the earthquake.
3. T F Nuclear radiation does not usually travel very far.
4. T F The Fukushima reactors avoided nuclear meltdown.
5. T F The plant workers didn’t work in high-radiation areas.

Groupon
Groupon is one of today’s newest and most exciting successful businesses. Groupon, which offers discounted gift
certificates that can be used at both local and national companies, is a web-based company with more than 35
million registered users.
Groupon, a combination of the words group and coupon, was created by Andrew Mason from Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, in 2008. Mason was originally working on the Point, a social-justice web-based project that he
thought would help solve the world’s big problems, like homelessness and hunger. Groupon was an afterthought
project that Mason and his business associates hoped would pay the bills while they continued work on the Point.
Groupon is so popular because it offers people living in certain areas around the world the opportunity to buy
products and services from local businesses at a deep discount. Groupon offers one special deal each day with a
minimum number of buyers. For a deal to be successful, the minimum number of buyers (for example, 2,000
people willing to buy a half-off coupon for a restaurant) need to agree to purchase the deal. The more people
Groupon can find who agree to buy a product or service, the more it drives down the price, but Groupon also
makes sure that the business offering the product doesn’t lose money in the process.
Mason feels that Groupon can be used as a tool for social change. He says, “When consumers are buying these
half-off deals, they don’t realize it, but they’re playing their part in revitalizing their local economy and reversing
the trend of people spending a larger amount of time in front of the computer screen . . . .”
