Symbolism

In your previous activities, you have learned that in order to show the experience to the readers, the writer
should use imagery and utilize figures of speech to create vivid images in the mind of the readers. Figures of
speech like simile, metaphor, personification, and others. help the writer provide vibrant effect to the story.
Symbolism is a literary device which the writer uses one thing to represent something abstract like ideas
and emotions. Symbols (concrete objects) engage readers on an emotional level and convey large and complex
ideas.
Some symbols are universal, like water for cleansing, but others are more culturally based. In some
African societies for example, a black cat is seen as good luck. In Greek mythology, the Gods are all symbols
for forces of nature. For example, Poseidon is a symbol of the sea. He is extremely powerful, but also wrathful
and unpredictable. By telling stories of Poseidon’s vengeful fury, the Greeks symbolically delivered a message
about how dangerous the sea can be. The ability to interpret symbols is essential to the full understanding and
enjoyment of literature. (Creative Nonfiction, Solmerano, et al.)

Example

“The warmth of sun’s ray as it kisses my skin felt like hell. It seems like I have stated all types of curses
in my head for not bringing an umbrella as I walk on the banquets and sidewalks of Novaliches, Bayan in Quezon
City.”

Symbol: Sun’s ray

Symbolism: Realizations. The author used “sun’s ray” (as a symbol) which symbolizes the realizations
that the character will take in the story.

Activity
Determine the symbol and analyze the symbolism of the object in the context of the text.

1. I finally reached the peak of the Mt. Melibengoy after hours of walking in the dim forest. The sun was
bright as if greeting me for my victory.
