format by double-clicking the appropriate file in \Goodies\Docs.
In-game Help is available in the form of Rollover Help. Activate Rollover Help by moving the mouse
pointer over an item on the screen about which you want information. The Rollover Help text
automatically appears in the lower portion of your screen.

C. Corrections to the Print Documentation

The following changes were made after the manual was printed.
Section 4.5 Armor in MechWarrior BattleTech Reference: The manual incorrectly states that Reactive
armor decreases the damage inflicted by all ammunition-based weapons. It should state that Reactive
armor only decreases the damage inflicted by projectile weapons, missiles excluded.
Screenshot key in MechWarrior Quick Reference card: The quick reference card indicates that
CTRL+P takes a screenshot from the game. The correct key is PRINT SCREEN.
D. DirectX Issues
DirectX 8.0 or later must be installed on your computer before you can play MechWarrior: Vengeance. If
you do not have DirectX installed on your computer and you chose not to install DirectX when you
installed MechWarrior: Vengeance, you will receive the following message: "A required .dll file, Dplayx.dll,
was not found." To fix this problem, reinstall MechWarrior: Vengeance and install DirectX 8.0, or install
DirectX 8.0 manually by using the procedure in “Installing DirectX 8,” in section B, “Installation.”
If you did install DirectX when you installed MechWarrior: Vengeance but your video drivers are not
compatible with DirectX 8.0, you will receive the following message when you restart your computer:
"MechWarrior: Vengeance could not initialize DirectX. Make sure that DirectX 8.0 or higher is installed
and contact your hardware manufacturer for a video driver update." To fix this problem, update your video
drivers (see section I, “3D Card Drivers and Manufacturers”).
Always make sure you have the latest DirectX-compatible video and audio drivers from your hardware
manufacturers. If you continue to have any video or audio problems, see “Display” and “Audio” in section
F, “Configuration Issues,” and section H, “3D Card Issues,” for any issues related to your 3D card. If you
still have problems, get the latest DirectX troubleshooting information at
http://support.microsoft.com/support/directx/.

E. Gameplay Issues
The following are the known gameplay issues for MechWarrior: Vengeance.

Multiplayer
Camera Ship controls: The Camera Ship feature can be selected in the Host Setup screen for hosting a
multiplayer game. It allows the host to view any part of the map, from many different angles, in the game
he or she is hosting. It also allows the host to watch the action as it progresses.

Camera Function Keyboard or Joystick

Pan up ALT+W
Pan down ALT+S
Rotate left ALT+D
Rotate right ALT+A
Zoom in ALT+E
Zoom out ALT+Q
Elevation Joystick forward or back
Pivot Joystick left or right
Zoom in or out Throttle up or down
ZoneMatch/LAN games list shows wrong game or map type: In Multiplayer, if the game type or map
type is changed in a game that appears as both TCP/IP and LAN-GUN, and the games list is updated
within 20 seconds of the change, the games list will show the earlier game or map type. Because LAN
updates are instantaneous and the query server pings the game server every 20 seconds, wait at least 20
seconds before clicking Update List.
Details option appears to hang: In a LAN or Direct IP game, if you are using the Details option in the
Server Browser of Multiplayer, and are trying to get information on a server and the host drops out, you
will get the following message: “Receiving Player Info...” The message will go away a short time later.
Mission review does not support bots (AI players): When running a mission review after a multiplayer
game containing computer AI players, they will not appear in the replay.
IP address is only used to browse for games: In the Connection Setup wizard where you can enter an
IP address for where you want to browse for a game, do not enter anything at this time. The IP address is
for future support of game browsing services and is presently unavailable.
Custom decals take long time to load via modem: If custom decals are used in games run on modem
servers, the mission load time may be extensive. Administrators of modem servers should disable the use
of custom decals in the Options screen for Multiplayer.
Launching games from a Zone lobby: A Zone game (that is, any game launched from the Zone lobby)
that follows a previous Zone game automatically uses the same settings as the first game, and the host is
unable to change them. This avoids the conflict of playing a dedicated server game versus a game
launched from the Zone. To change settings, the host must disconnect with the Zone Web site and then
start over with the new settings. Then, if a player joins the game on the Zone after you see it appear
again, the new game will have the new settings.

Other
Cannot skip opening cinema after pressing ALT+TAB: If you press ALT+TAB to go to another
application running on your desktop and then return to the game, you cannot skip the opening cinema
with the keyboard. Instead, use the left mouse button to skip it.
Changing resolution during Setup: If you change the screen resolution while running MechWarrior:
Vengeance Setup, the install screen is not fully visible. To avoid this, do not change the screen resolution
while Setup installs the game.
Poor performance and instability: If you have DMA installed on a computer running Windows 98 or
Windows Millennium, make sure you have DMA enabled. Enabling DMA will greatly improve performance
and stability.
To enable DMA
32. Close all open applications.
33. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
34. Double-click System.
35. Click the Device Manager tab, and then double-click Disk Drives.
36. Select the IDE/ Disk (hard drive), and then click the Properties button.
37. Click the Settings tab, and then select the DMA check box.
38. To restart your machine with DMA enabled, click OK.
Enabling num pad controls: If you want to use the numeric keypad, or num pad, keys for control, make
sure you have pressed the NUMLOCK key to toggle them on.
Disabling the mouse Y axis: If you want to use the mouse to steer the ’Mech, you must add the
following line in the [Special Commands] section of the Options.ini file (found in the MechWarrior
Vengeance root directory) in order to disable the Y axis on the mouse:
mousey=[true, false] (true is the default, and false means to ignore the mouse Y value)
Mapping mouse buttons: You can map the mouse buttons, but you must first assign them to a key with
the mouse software. For example, button 4 would be the K key, so that when you press button 4 you
would technically be remapping K to whatever control you want. This is for mouse buttons 4 and up only.
Options.ini error message: If you launch the game and receive the error message “options.ini is a
required page!” you may have accidentally deleted your Options.ini file or reinstalled the game to another
directory. To fix this, double-click Autoconfig.exe in the MechWarrior Vengeance root directory. This
creates an Options.ini file for you, and you’ll be able to successfully launch the game.
HUD font seems too large: By default, the text fonts in the HUD are set to be fairly large and legible, but
this can also cause them to bleed past the margins in some resolutions. To make your font size smaller,
double-click Autoconfig.exe in the MechWarrior Vengeance root directory, click Advanced, select HUD
Font Size, and then select a smaller size.
Fonts hard to read when graphic detail is set to low: If your computer is running Windows 98 or
Windows Millennium and defaults to 640x480 resolution, change your resolution in the game to 800x600
to be able to read the font properly.

F. Configuration Issues
Known hardware and operating system configuration issues are listed in this section. For issues with
specific 3D cards, see section H, “3D Card Issues.”

Operating Systems
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) for Multiplayer

· Playing by going through a Windows Millennium Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) machine:
This works properly for Windows Millennium and non-Windows Millennium machines (that have
DirectX 8 installed), except in a ZoneMatch instance.

· Playing by going through a Windows 2000 ICS machine: Only one client at a time can play
through the server to the Internet, with either DirectX versions 7 or 8.

· Playing by going through a Windows 98 SE ICS machine: This operating system does not
support the DirectPlay Protocol Flag, so no users can play.

Windows 2000

AGP aperture size and Windows 2000 stability: If you are experiencing stability issues such as system
reboots and system hangs while running MechWarrior: Vengeance under Windows 2000, first make sure
you have the latest Windows 2000 drivers installed for all of your hardware and motherboard. Also, install
the latest Service Packs for Windows 2000. Finally, try lowering the AGP aperture size to increase the
stability of your system. Contact your motherboard manufacturer about how to change your AGP aperture

duron/amd_win2k_patch.html>.

Windows 98

Game minimizes when network connection is made: When the user interface is used to establish a
dial-up connection, the game minimizes after the connection is established. To fix this, simply maximize
the game from the Windows taskbar.

Windows 95

Windows 95 Gold: To run MechWarrior: Vengeance on Windows 95 Gold, you must have the latest
Indeo Video 3.2, 4.5, 5.11, and Indeo Audio 2.5 codecs installed. You can download them from
<http://www.ligos.com/indeo/downloads/form.shtm>.
Multiplayer: If you are running Windows 95 and you have not installed Internet Explorer 4.0 or later, you
need to upgrade the networking on your computer to play MechWarrior: Vengeance. To do this, double-
click Ws2setup.exe on CD1 in \Goodies\Wsock2.
NOTE: This upgrade detects versions of Windows later than Windows 95 and will NOT install over them.
This download is not intended for use on computers running Windows 98.

Display
NVIDIA TNT and GeForce cards: When running MechWarrior: Vengeance on a system with a GeForce

duron/amd_win2k_patch.html>).

Audio
Vortex 2 audio chipset (Turtle Beach Montego II, Diamond Monster Sound MX-300) compatibility
with Windows 2000: You may experience choppy playback of audio during the installation of
MechWarrior: Vengeance as well as other anomalies or even lock-ups in the game. The original
manufacturer of the Vortex 2 chipset, Aureal Semiconductor, has gone out of business. No driver updates
are available for Vortex 2-based sound cards running on Windows 2000, other than the generic Vortex 2
driver included with Windows 2000. Contact your hardware manufacturer for updated drivers. For
reference drivers, visit <http://support.a3d.com/>.
Alternatively, try the following solution:
39. Click Start on the Windows taskbar, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
40. Double-click Multimedia, and then click the Audio tab.
41. Under Playback, click Advanced Properties, and then click the Performance tab.
42. Drag the Hardware Acceleration slider to the left by 2 settings, and then click OK.

Software
Software DVD Players: Certain display cards (for example, those in the Maxi Gamer Xentor family) that
come bundled with software DVD players may experience problems when trying to start MechWarrior:
Vengeance due to the opening cinemas being in the MPEG format. To correct this, contact your hardware
manufacturer for updated software. If problems persist, uninstall the software DVD player, and the game
should start and play normally.
Winsock 2.0 required to play network games: If you receive an error message referring to Winsock
2.0, manually install it by double-clicking Ws2setup.exe on CD1 in \Goodies\Wsock2.
NetMeeting disables hardware acceleration: If NetMeeting is running, or Remote Desktop Sharing is
enabled, you will have no hardware acceleration to run MechWarrior: Vengeance. This also happens
when NetMeeting has improperly shut down. To fix this, properly shut down NetMeeting from within the
application, or disable Remote Desktop Sharing if you have it enabled.

Hardware
Microsoft Dual Strike Joystick: You need to enable FX Mode in the Dual Strike software. You also need
to enable the mouse in the Options menu in the game to be able to use the free look ability during game
play.
Mitsumi CD-ROM drive: You may experience issues when launching MechWarrior: Vengeance with this
CD-ROM drive. Please contact your hardware manufacturer for firmware updates.

I. 3D Card Drivers and Manufacturers

Make sure that you have the latest drivers from the manufacturer of your video card. Many video issues
will be resolved if you install your video card's latest drivers. MechWarrior: Vengeance may not detect
some older video cards properly because their video drivers are not DirectX 8-compliant. Please contact
your video card manufacturer for updated drivers or install the latest reference drivers for your video
board. Note that many reference drivers are not supported by the chipset manufacturer. Listed below are
some common video card manufacturers' Web sites. MechWarrior: Vengeance may not support some or
all of the cards produced by a particular manufacturer.
