THE CLASS OF ’83 :THE PUNISHERS OF MUMBAI POLICE

By- Hussain Zaidi

The class of ’83 is a very well written book by Hussain Zaidi. The book is set in the
1980’s Bombay Underworld Mafia’s reign , At a time when Mumbai was plagued by
underworld gangsters like Dawood Ibrahim, Iqbal Kaskar and Chhota Rajan, Arun
Gawli. Though years have passed since his stints at newspapers where he unearthed
stories about Mumbai's most feared gangsters at a time when the underworld had the
city in its grip, Zaidi’s storytelling skills have endured; he gives detailed
characterisations and profiles, along with vivid imagery of the city in the time period the
book is set in. This book romanticizes about crime, villains portrayed as anti-heros, as a
result of which readers actually sympathise with the mafias irrespective of the heinous
nature of their crimes. This was no to glorify any particular gang or gangster, but for the
reader’s digest. the batch of 1983 from the Police Training School (PTC) in Nashik-
trained by the legendary Arvind Inamdar and pradeep sharma produced a group of
prominent encounter specialists who have been credited with bringing back the rule of
law in the city.

This book was made into an original motion picture, which was released on Netflix on
21 august 2020. The movie’s lead actor Bobby Deol screened as vijay singh (fictional
character of pradeep Sharma). Inspired from real accounts of the city’s first encounter
specialists, the film depicts how the officers shrewdly planned and executed hits while
staying within the system and following all necessary protocol. But then it quickly slips
into a predictable rise-and-fall-and-rise narrative with egos and corruption breaking up
the friends, and a last-ditch shot at redemption triggered by their mentor .

The cinematography of “The class of ‘83” is perfect , the dialogues and monologues
delivered are powerful and leave an impact, the scenes show the actual terror of
gangsters and the rise of police officers from desperation to fearlessness. The lighting
of the movie is warm and moody to strike the atmosphere of Bombay in the 80’s.

“The premise of 'Class of 83' is undoubtedly an interesting one and the film does a
commendable job of recreating the early 80s era –completely imbibing the look and feel
of that time.” Said the times now review group.

Overall this book and movie is something worth reading and watching to know more
about the true heroes of our nation.
