Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use
this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
allowing them to manage their own learning at home. Furthermore, you are
expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included
in the module.

For the learner:


As a learner, you must learn to become responsible of your own
learning. Take time to read, understand, and perform the different activities
in the module.

As you go through the different activities of this module be reminded of


the following:

Health for Life

Today’s generation enjoys better physical and mental health than any
previous generation. This is mainly due to improved nutrition and medical
care brought about by advanced medical technology.

Information on health issues has been easily available in many forms.


Students take up lesson on health education and other people, young and
old, real and watch health guides on newspaper, magazines and television.
Having acquired these information, you will become a wise spender for your
health.

Choosing foods can often be confusing. Supermarkets offer thousands


of food choices. You need to learn how to sort through the different products
to choose the best foods.

You should be a wise and informed consumer so you can decide which
products to buy or services to avail. As a consumer you have to prioritize
safety when buying products like foods, medicines, and other things that you
use. This way you will be protected form the possible health dangers that
might affect you and your family.

In this module, you will learn the value of being a consumer like you.
As a consumer, you expect quality and satisfaction in the products you buy.
You also deserve to receive good treatment and courtesy from people selling
their goods to you.

What is consumer health?


● A consumer is anyone who buys products/services.
● Your health is affected by now responsible you are as a
consumer.
● How does advertising and media affect consumer health?

Components of Consumer Health


There are two basic components involved in consumer
health: consumer health education and awareness of laws on
predicting consumer health.
1. Consumer Health Education
This component deals with the wide dissemination of
information about important health topics. Consumer health
education, as primary provided by the government, tries to protect
the people by offering relevant information on disease prevention
related to purchase of goals and services.

2. Awareness of Laws on Protecting Consumer Health


The government has laws that aim to protect the interest of
the consumers and to promote their general welfare. Among
these interests interest would be the protection of the consumers
against products and services that become hazards to their
health and safety.
One of these laws is the Republic Act No. 10611 or the Food
Safety Act of 2013. The law strengthens the food safety regulatory
system to combat food trade malpractices and substandard or
hazardous products.

Another law is the Republic Act No. 7394 also known as The
Consumer Act of the Philippines, has provisions that aim to protect
consumers against hazards to health and safety. It also has
implementing rules that unsure the safe and good quality of foods,
drugs, cosmetics, and devices.
Generally, the laws help to make the consumer be aware of
their rights and responsibilities such as the following:
1. The right to basic needs
2. The right to safety
3. The right to information
4. The right to choose
5. The right to representation
6. The right to seek redress
7. The right to consumer education
8. The right to a healthy environment

Consumer Rights and Responsibilities

Being good consumer means knowing what to look out for


and what to avoid. It means know where and how to get the best
value for money, where to go if things go wrong. Your role as a
consumer has both right and responsibilities.

1. The right to safety- To be protected against products,


production, processes and services against that are hazardous to
health or life.
2. The right to be informed- To be given facts needed to make an
informed choice and protected against dishonest or misleading
advertising and labeling.

3. The right to choose- To be able to select from a range of
products and services and competitive
prices with an assurance satisfactory quality.

Some Reliable Sources of information

1. Medical and health professionals (Family and school doctors,


dentists, nurses, health science educators)
2. Government agencies like Department of Health (DOH), Food
and Drug Administration (FDA), Bureau of Food and Drugs
(BFAD), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)
3. Websites ending in gov, edu, and org.
4. Local health officials
5. Educational institutions

Some Unreliable Sources of Health Information

1. Outdated customs, practices, and superstitions without


scientific basis
2. Information based on ignorance and prejudice
3. Commercialized health information
4. Personal options and incomplete information
5. Quack or pseudo healers

• Consumer Health refers to the decisions you make about the purchase
and use of health information, products, and services that will have a direct
effect on your health. It has three components namely: health information,
health products and healthcare services.

• Components of Consumer Health


There are two basic components involved in consumer health: consumer
health education and awareness of laws on predicting consumer
health.

• Criteria and guidelines must be considered when availing health services


or product. Details of the product, source of information, feedback
mechanisms are some of the things to be considered. As a wise consumer,
you should be able to gather information, compare available products, and
inquire for more so all doubts will be erased.

Let Us Reflect
As consumer, you should know your rights especially when buying goods and
services that directly affect your health.
Be wise in choosing goods to purchase. Choose the ones that will be
most beneficial to your health. Foods, most especially, should be closely
checked before buying them as they will be taken directly into your body. Be
aware of services that may compensate the money you spend. Know your
responsibilities as a consumer. Report any form of illegal services and fake
goods that you discover.
