RRU PA Efficiency Improvement Feature Parameter
Description 2 Technical Description

2 Technical Description

With the rapid growth of the telecom industry and continuous expansion of telecom networks,
the demand for electricity has grown significantly and the operation and maintenance (O&M)
cost in the telecom industry increases. In addition, overuse of energy and overexploitation of
natural resources have contributed to rapid environmental deterioration. High energy
consumption and rapid environmental deterioration have become huge challenges for the
telecom industry. Therefore, telecom operators are in high demand for cost-effective and
environment-friendly solutions to save energy, reduce pollution, and build a green and
harmonious environment. To achieve this goal, Huawei has developed the RRU PA Efficiency
Improvement feature.
An RRU consists of the following components, as shown in Figure 2-1.

Figure 2-1 Composition of the RRU

PA indicates the power amplifier. The PA consumes most of the power of the RRU.
Continuously improved PA efficiency is the green energy-saving goal for base stations
provided by Huawei.
This feature uses the new-generation PA predistortion algorithm with higher complexity for
RRUs to further improve multi-carrier PA efficiency. The PA predistortion algorithm
improves the PA efficiency in various states and reduces RRU power consumption by 2% to
15%.
l After this feature is enabled, the TRX software runs the new PA predistortion algorithm
to improve the PA efficiency and save power consumption.

RRU PA Efficiency Improvement Feature Parameter
Description 2 Technical Description

l After this feature is disabled, the TRX software runs the simplified PA predistortion
algorithm, to keep a normal PA efficiency.
Not all the RRUs support this feature. Only the RRU3268 working in 2.6 GHz and the
RRU3838 support this feature currently. You can run the DSP RRU command to query the
PA efficiency improvement capability. If the RRU PA Efficiency Improvement feature is
supported, you can run the MOD RRU command to set PAEFFSWITCH to ON.
This feature is optional and is under license control in both UMTS and LTE networks. The
sales unit of this feature is per RRU.
l For a single-mode base station, the number of RRUs that can be enabled with this feature
is controlled by the authorized license in UMTS or LTE mode.
l For a co-MPT base station, the number of RRUs that can be enabled with this feature is
controlled by the two authorized licenses in UMTS and LTE modes.
l For a separate-MPT base station, an RRU may connect to two main control boards at the
same time. In this case, only one main control board is enabled with this feature and only
one license is required for the main control board. If both main control boards are
enabled with this feature, this feature still can take effect and each main control board
requires one license. To disable the feature, the feature on both main control boards must
be disabled.

5.4.3 Activation

5.4.3.1 Using MML Commands

Step 1 Run the MOD RRU command on the NodeB or eNodeB to set PAEFFSWITCH to ON for
an RRU.
When all the cells carried on the RRU are deactivated, this feature has been enabled.
When some cells carried on the RRU are activated, this feature takes effect only after the PA
is restarted to protect the PA. To restart the PA, you can deactivate and activate any cell
carried on the RRU in step 2.

Fault Description
The feature cannot be configured or does not take effect. The following alarms are reported
when PAEFFSWITCH is set to ON:
l ALM-26245 Configuration Data Inconsistency
l ALM-26811 Configured Capacity Limit Exceeding Licensed Limit
l ALM-26819 Data Configuration Exceeding Licensed Limit

Fault Handling
l If ALM-26245 Configuration Data Inconsistency is reported, check whether the RRU
supports this feature.
Run the DSP RRU command to query the PA efficiency improvement capability.
