Analytical Essay Planning

This workbook is designed to support you in planning your


upcoming analytical essay. Look at all the notes you have made
about genre, characters and events in Edward Scissorhands to
help you plan and organise your ideas.
Your essay question is:

3. Now that you have planned your essay, have a go writing an
introduction and conclusion. Look at the example introduction and
conclusion if you are not sure what you should write. (The example
profile is based on the novel The Giver.)

Introduction
Global sentence Authors are renown for capturing their reading
audiences in the expositions of their texts.

Nutshell sentence This is true of the novel, The Giver, written by Lois
Lowry that reveals this narrative is set in a very strict,
controlled community and conveys a caution against
totalitarian governments.
Thesis statement The ideas explored in this text are that propaganda is
used to control ‘The Community’, that information,
independent thought and freedom are restricted and
the idea that citizens are living a dehumanised existence
under a totalitarian government.
Expanding sentence These ideas have been conveyed through the use of
foreshadowing, characterisation and setting
respectively.

Concluding sentence The way these ideas are conveyed in the exposition
indicates some of the bleak aspects of a totalitarian
government.

Summary Lowry has outlined through this text the adverse
effects of living under a totalitarian government.
