pictures and fills in the words presented to them.
• Based on the activity, the teacher will ask learners about
their preliminary insight of the lesson today on how the
pictures and fill in the blank sentences that will bridge the
topic.
• The teacher will present and elucidate the lesson and
objectives of the day by associating the images to the story
and the descriptions on subject-verb agreement.
C. Discussion Reading the Origin of this World
The literary text is divided into 6 paragraphs:
• The teacher shall read the 1st paragraph of the story.
• The selected student reads each of the next paragraphs – 2,
3, 4, 5, and 6.
• The teacher discusses what the literary text is all about.
Deepening the Text: Integrating Subject Verb Agreement in
the story

The 10 rules of SVA: An Overview

• The teacher will introduce the 10 rules of subject-verb
agreement and provide examples based from the literary
text to the learners.
• The teacher will also emphasize that effective writing is
governed by grammatical rules, especially those that refer
to subject-verb agreement.

1. If the subject is singular, the verb must be singular

too.
Ex. The world is created by a great being.
2. If the subject is plural, the verb must also be plural.
Ex. These dwarfs are short, plump, and long-haired.
3. When the subject of the sentence is composed of two
or more nouns or pronouns connected by and, use a
plural verb.
Ex. Heaven and Earth are interconnected.
4. When there is one subject and more than one verb,
the verbs throughout the sentence must agree with the
subject.
Ex. The sky also consists of seven layers and is too high.
5. When a phrase comes between the subject and the
verb, remember that the verb still agrees with the
subject, not the noun or pronoun in the phrase
following the subject of the sentence.
Ex. The god, as well as the angels, is divine.

6. When two or more singular nouns or pronouns

are connected by "or" or "nor," use a singular
verb.
Ex. The dwarf or angel is capable of magical spells.
7. When a compound subject contains both a singular
and a plural noun or pronoun joined by "or" or "nor,"
the verb should agree with the part of the subject that
is closest to the verb. This is also called the rule of
proximity.
Ex. Angel or Birds are flying in the sky.
8. The words and phrases "each," "each one,"
"either," "neither," "everyone," "everybody,"
"anyone," "anybody," "nobody," "somebody,"
"someone," and "no one" are singular and require a
singular verb.
Ex. Each of the layers has its own characteristics.
9. Noncount nouns take a singular verb.
Ex. Living defines Earth.
10. Collective nouns are words that imply more
than one person but are considered singular and take a
singular verb. Some examples are "group," "team,"
"committee," "family," and "class."
Ex. Karibanga are said to possess magical powers.

• The teacher presents the rules and give examples that

are based from the text.
D. Application • The class will be grouped into 4.
• Every group is given a different task that shall be done
within 10 minutes. When the time is fulfilled, the group
shall perform their work within 3 minutes. The Rubrics of
the activity will guide them. Once the group is done, they
need to do the ready clap.
• The teacher will distribute the rubric card before doing the
tasks.
o Group 1 – Creates a poster-slogan about their
insight of the Origin of this World using correct
subject-verb agreement.
o Group 2 – Performs a tableau in motion that shows
an overview of the Origin of this World. One
member explains the tableau using accurate
subject-verb agreement.
o Group 3 – Does a short talk show that depicts the
rules of subject-verb agreement and the text The
o Origin of this world.
o Group 4 – Exhibits a short infomercial on why
SVA is essential in daily lives.
• After all the group presentations, the teacher gives
constructive and relevant feedback based on the rubrics.
• Students shall understand and appreciate the correct use of
subject-verb agreement based on the differentiated
activities.
E. Abstraction a. Have learners make generalizations regarding the following
rules concerning subject-verb agreement:
i. compound subjects joined by and
ii. every or each preceding a compound subject
iii. indefinite pronouns as subjects
iv. subjects joined by or / nor

b. The students' generalization will be measured by providing

them with a frame of reference that significantly assists with
recalling. Understanding how the story is organized and gives
its interrelatedness on the subject-verb agreement is necessary
for students to reach the highest levels of their perception.
c. The teacher will also ask the learners about the connection
of the subject-verb agreement in writing a literary piece by
providing some examples.

IV. Evaluation:
Keep practicing: Practice Makes Perfect!
• The teacher will request the learners to scrutinize the
sentences and answer the items as instructed.
• The teacher will ask students to articulate each grammar
rule as answers are discussed.
• The teacher will give an exercise to assess and evaluate the
learnings of the class individually

Instruction: Below is an exercise based on the contents of the

article The Maranao Tribe from Lake Lanao. Specify the verb,
which will agree with its subject in each sentence. Write your
answers on a piece of paper.

• The teacher will give an asynchronous task to the virtual
learners that will be passed in the next online session.
(1) Read any short story and discern the correct usage
of subject-verb agreement in the text. (2) Read the
literary text entitled How the World was Created
(Panayan) and interpret the elements of the creation
story, their intended purpose, and the setting during
which they were produced. (3) Have some also
advanced reading and research some information
regarding the importance of tense consistency.

Attachment B: Literary Text

The Origin of This World (Maranao) from the Anthology of Philippine Myths by Damiana L.
Eugenio
1 According to Maranao folklore, this world was created by a great Being. It is not known,
however, who exactly is this great Being. Or how many days it took him to create this world.
2 This world is divided into seven layers. The earth has also seven layers. Each layer is
inhabited by a different kind of being. The uppermost layer, for example, is the place we are
inhabiting. The second layer is being inhabited by dwarfs. These dwarfs are short, plump, and
long-haired. They are locally known as Karibanga. The Karibanga are said to possess magical
powers. They are usually invisible to the human eye. The third layer of the earth which is found
under the sea or lake is inhabited by nymphs. These nymphs also possess certain magical powers.
It is stated in the story of Rajah Indarapatra that he met and fell in love with the princess nymph
with whom he had a child.

3 The sky also consists of seven layers. Each layer has a door which is guarded day and night
by huge mythical birds called garoda. The seventh layer of the sky is the seat of heaven which is
also divided into seven layers. Every layer in the sky is inhabited by angels. Maranaws believe that
angels do not need food. They all possess wings with which they fly.
4 Heaven which is found on the seventh layer of the sky is where good people‘s spirits go
after death. Saints are assigned to the seventh layer while persons who ―barely made it‖ are
confined to the lower most layer which is found at the bottom of heaven.
5 It is in heaven where we find the tree-of-life. On each leaf of the tree-of-life is written the
name of every person living on earth. As soon as a leaf ripens or dries and falls, the person whose
name it carries also dies.
6 The soul of every person is found in tightly covered jars kept in one section of heaven. This
particular section of heaven is closely guarded by a monster with a thousand eyes, named Walo.
Walo, in addition to his thousand eyes, has also eight hairy heads. The epic Darangan speaks of
Madale, Bantugan‘s brother and, Mabaning, Husband of Lawanen, entering this section and
retrieving the soul of Bantugan.
