This document covers general requirements for valve installation of steel pipe gas
distribution pipeline system.

2. Definition
2.1. Gas Main is a segment of pipeline in a distribution system installed to convey
gas to individual service lines or others mains.
2.2. Gas Service Line is the piping installed between a main, or other source of
supply and the meter set assembly.
2.3. Main Line Valve is valves installed in main pipe for controlling the flow or
pressure of gas in a distribution system either in normal operation or
emergency situation.
2.4. Service Line Valve is valves installed in service pipe for controlling the flow
of gas in a distribution system either in normal operation or emergency.

3. General Provision
3.1. The valves installed in steel piping system shall comply with Specification for
Valve, Fitting, Flange, Bolt, Gasket and Insulating Joint.
3.2. Prior to installation, valve shall be checked for internal cleanliness and can be
operated properly.
3.3. Valve shall be positioned as to ensure unrestricted access for their operation
and maintenance.

4. Installation of Main Line Valve

4.1. A valve shall be installed on the inlet piping of each regulator station controlling
the flow or pressure of gas in a distribution system. The distance between the
valve and the regulator shall be sufficient to permit the operation of the valve
during an emergency, such as a large gas leak or a fire in the station.
4.2. Valves on mains line, whether for operating or emergency purposes shall be
located in a manner that will provide ready access and facilitate their operation
during an emergency. The box or enclosure shall be installed in a manner to
avoid transmitting external loads to the main line.
4.3. Valves shall be installed in high-pressure distribution systems in accessible
locations to reduce the time to shut down a section of main in an emergency.
In determining the spacing of the valves, consideration should be given to the
operating pressure and size of the mains and local physical conditions as well
as the number and type of consumers that might be affected by a shutdown

4.4. Typical installation of valve as well as dimension requirement of valve box for
main line and branch valve as shown in Drawing.

5. Installation of Service Line Valves

5.1. On service lines designed to operate at pressures in excess of 60 psig, the
service line valves shall be the equivalent a needle type valve. Other types of
valves may be used where tests by the manufacturer or by PGN indicate that
they are suitable for this kind of service.
5.2. Service line valves shall be installed on all new service lines (including
replacements) in a location readily accessible from the outside.
5.3. In relation to regulator or meter, valves shall be located upstream of the
regulator. If there is no regulator, the valve shall be installed upstream of the
meter.
5.4. In service line operating at low pressure and no regulator installed, the valve
may be located above ground or underground installed upstream of meter.
The valve shall be designed so that it can be locked in a closed position.
5.5. In service line operating at high pressure and regulator installed, the valve
may be located above ground or underground installed upstream of regulator.
The valve shall be designed so that it can be locked in a closed position.
5.6. The underground valves shall be located in a covered durable curb box or
standpipe designed to permit ready operation of the valve. The curb box or
standpipe shall be supported independently of the service line. Typical
installation and dimension requirement of box valve of underground valve as
shown in Drawing.
5.7. All service lines operating at a pressure greater than 10 psig and all service
lines NPS 2 or larger a valve located on the service line outside of the
building. Except that whenever gas is supplied to location where large
numbers of persons assemble, an outside valve will be required, regardless of
the size of the service line or the service line pressure.
5.8. The valve shall be supported on a bed of concrete or other suitable materials
and the valve spindle shall be protected by sleeving.
