 CONTENT STANDARDS:
The students demonstrate understanding of:
a. The meaning of environment; Ecology
b. Differentiating the Organisms in the environment and enumerating the
characteristics of living things and differentiating each.
c. Identifying the different Kinds of Interaction of living organisms in the
environment.

 PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
The students should be able to:
a. To differentiate the Kinds of organism/things in the environment
b. To enumerate the characteristics of living ting and differentiate each.
c. Identify/List down the different kinds of interaction of living organisms in the
environment

interrelationship with the number of species and individuals of the same species.

Appreciate the beauty of the environment and the varieties of species which are beneficial
in our everyday life.

 Introduction:
In this Unit, you will be exploring the intricate relationship of living organism
with one another and with their environment. All living things share certain
characteristics of life. For example, all living things are made up of only one cell, but
other living things such as humans are made up of trillions of cells, you will learn about
the characteristics of living things.

A. Pre-Reading Activity
Before you read the unit create the graphic organizer entitled “Concept Map”. AS you
read the Unit, fill in the Concept Map with details about the characteristics of living things.
CONCEPT MAP

Start Up Activity 1: Lights On !!


In this activity you will work with a partner to see how eyes react to changes in light.
A. Procedure:
1. Observe a classmate’s eyes in a lighted room
Note: The size of your partner’s pupils.
2. Have your partner keep both eyes open and ask him or her to cover each one; with a
cupped hand, wait about one minute.
3. Instruct your partner to pull away both hands quickly. Immediately look at your
partner’s pupils.
4. Now briefly shine a flashlight into your partner’s eyes. Record how this affect your
partner’s pupils.
Caution: Do not use the sun as the source of the light.
5. Change place with your partner and repeat step 1-4 so that your partner can
observe your eyes

Let’s proceed to the next lesson about the interaction of living organism in the environment
Interactions may be founded on a resource or a condition. Resources are those portions
of the ecosystem that are limited and eventually can be depleted over time.
These are water, food and territory. Conditions on the other hand, are abiotic factors in
the environment which cannot be depleted but their availability can be altered by the activities
of the community.
Two main forms of interactions occur in the ecosystem. Intraspecific and interspecific.
Intraspecific interactions occur among members of the same population, while interspecific
interactions are those connections between two or more different species.
After reading, mention or list down interaction or relationship of species in the
environment. Be able to differentiate each identified interaction.
