Yes/No questions
There are two types of questions we can make. The easiest are Yes / No questions. (They are called Yes/No questions
because our answers start with Yes or No.)

Auxiliary Subject main verb in …? Answers

verb Infinitive (without
(do/does) ‘to’)
A S I …?
Do you have any friends? Yes, I do.
Does your sister live in Huajuapan? No, she doesn’t.
Do your parents work in Puebla? No, they don’t.
Does the teacher speak Spanish? Yes, she does.

Another way of remembering Yes/No questions is to call them ‘ASI’ questions.

A = auxiliary verb

S = Subject

I = main verb in Infinitive (without ‘to’)

¿Cómo se forman las preguntas en inglés? – ¡ASÍ!

When we want more information, we ask Question word questions. The question word always comes at the start of
the question, so our question making formula changes to QASI…?

Question word Auxiliary verb Subject main verb in Infinitive …?

(do/does) (without ‘to’)
Q A S I …?
What do you do ?
What time do they get up on weekends?
When does the train arrive ?
Where does she live ?
Who does Lucy want to marry: Bill or Ted?
Why do you study at UTM?
How many sisters does Aaron have ?
How much money do you have ?
How often do the police drive past your house?
How does my mother know when I’ve been bad?
Answer the questions using the simple present affirmative or negative forms.

Lesson 5.4 How Often (Con qué frecuencia)
When we talk about our daily routine and our free-time activities, it is often connected with ‘how often’ we
complete these activities. One way to express how often is how many times we do the activity. We usually
express how many times after the action.
For example: I like to swim four times a week.
Mary walks her dogs three times a day.
This is how to form

two day
three week
four times a month
five year
etc.

Note 1: for 1 time, we say once. My friends and I go to the beach once a year.
For two times, we say twice or two times.
I brush my teeth twice a day, or I brush my teeth two times a day.
Note 2: we say every day for things we do every day. (Todos los días.)

ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY: How often ....
Another way to say how often is using adverbs of frequency.
• Study the grammar reference chart below.
• (estudia la tabla para aprender cómo se aplica los adverbios de frecuencia)

• always
siempre 100% I always watch TV in the evening.

• almost always
casi siempre 95% She almost always eats breakfast.

• usually Michael usually gets up late on the

generalmente 75%
weekends.
• often
normalmente/a menudo 50% I often do exercise in the morning.

• sometimes They sometimes go to a coffee shop in

a veces 25%
their free time.
• seldom
• rarely I seldom see him.
5% I rarely see him.
• hardly ever
rara vez/casi nunca
I hardly ever see him.

• never
nunca 0% She never comes to class late.

NOTE 1: Adverbs usually come just before the verb they describe. When placed at the beginning of a
sentence, they add emphasis to how often the verb is complete.
(Normalmente se colocan los adverbios antes del verbo que describe. Cuando se coloca al principio de una oración,
estresa con que frecuencia se completa la acción.)

Example:
Why did Michael get up early on Saturday? Usually, he gets up late on weekends.

NOTE 2: In a sentence with a ‘be’ verb, the adverb of frequency comes after the ‘be’ verb.
(En una oración con el verbo ‘be’, el adverbio de frecuencia viene después del verbo ‘be’.)

Example:
They are usually tired after work.
