Module 6 Final Reflections

Prompt #1: In Module 1, you watched "Invictus," a clip from the movie "Gandhi," and a
60 Minute Segment on Mindfulness. The idea was to have you look at attitude and a
mental model about conflict, review the attitudes of two powerful leaders, and
consider your own approach to conflict. Did this Module help set a foundation upon
which to develop the rest of the course? What worked and didn't work?

At first, I was a bit disappointed that the first assignment would be watching a movie and
writing a prompt response. However, the movie was extremely powerful and definitely
laid out the foundation for what the course was going to be surrounded around. I
enjoyed starting the course off in a bit of an abstract way in order to connect to the main
lessons in a personal way.

Prompt #2: In Module 2, you were introduced to the martial art, Aikido. The purpose
of this module was to use a martial art that deals with "physical conflict" in a different
way, a way that provided a metaphor for how to deal with conflict in the workplace.
What did you take away from this Module? Did you see a connection between the
principles of Aikido and the principles of dealing professionally with workplace
conflict?

I enjoyed this module. We were finally able to understand what kind of college course
would be titled after a martial arts move. Come to find out, this was a metaphor for how
to deal with conflict on a personal level. I learned to be centered, relaxed, and calm. I
learned to welcome the gift of energy while blending with others to see their
perspectives. Finally, I learned that I need to take conflict in the direction I want it to go
without damaging the other person.

Prompt #3: In Module 3, you were introduced to the first conflict transformation skill,
"Spitting Out the Hook." Did you learn the skill? Will it help you deal with conflict? Was
this quiz (and were the quizzes} fair, too hard, or too easy? Did the quizzes help you
gain more from the text?
I was able to easily grasp the concept of “Spitting Out The Hook” and not “Taking The
Bait”. This will most definitely help me in the future and avoid unnecessary arguments
and additional conflict. I felt as if the quizzes were fairly straight forwards as long as I
paid close attention to the discussion boards and lectures.

Prompt #4: In Module 4, you were introduced to the second conflict transformation
skill, "H.E.A.R." Did you learn the skill? Will it help you deal with conflict? Some of you
already use an active listening skill; was learning H.E.A.R. too redundant or was it
valuable to review?

H.E.A.R. was an awesome skill to be refreshed on. Often, we all have trouble really
hearing someone else when they are talking to us. I think that this concept can be a bit
over taught in courses specific to my major, however sometimes we all need a reminder
to hear others more effectively.

Prompt #5: In Module 5, you were introduced to the third conflict transformation skill,
"BURN CLEAN." Did you learn the skill? Will it help you deal with conflict? Will it help
you express your "wants" without throwing out hooks?

I was able to “Burn Clean” and it most definitely is a useful tool when trying to resolve
conflict. Sometimes, it was hard to express all my “wants” without throwing out any
hooks, however with practice comes an even further understanding of this concept.

Prompt #6: In Module 6, you were introduced to the fourth conflict transformation skill,
"SAY YES." Did you learn the steps in this skill? Will you be able to use it to help you
transform conflict? How confident do you feel about using the SAY YES Model?

The SAY YES model was very helpful in resolving issues with my close twin friends who
are moving into a new home. We were able to follow the model and come to a
reasonable, mutually accepted result in which both parties were satisfied.

Prompt #7: Is there something you wish you had learned or some topic we needed to
spend more or less time on? Add any final thoughts you think would be helpful in
improving this course. Overall, was the workload fair and manageable, light or too
much?

Overall, this was a very helpful course. I think that the only thing I would recommend
would be to talk a little bit faster. I found myself having to speed up a lot of the lectures
because the talking was a bit too slow for me. Thank you for the great techniques!
