C. Consider each problem below. Determine whether the events are mutually exclusive or
not mutually exclusive. Then, find the probability.
Mutually Exclusive 1. Mario has 45 red chips, 12 blue chips, and 24 white chips.
What is the probability that Mario randomly selects a red chip
Chips Total
or a white chip?
Event A(Red) 45 P (A or C) = P(A)+P(C)
Event B(Blue) 12 = 45/81+24/81
Event C(White) 24 = 45/81+24/81
= 69/81
Total 81
P (A or C) = 23/27
Not Mutually Exclusive 2. Of 240 students, 176 are on the honor roll, 48 are members
of the varsity team, and 36 are in the honor roll and are
Students Total also members of the varsity team. What is the probability
Honor Rolls 176 that a randomly selected student is on the honor roll or is
a member of the varsity team?
Varsity Team 48
P (Honor Roll or Varsity Team) = P (Honor Rolls) + P (Varsity
Honor roll and 36 Team) - P (Honor roll and Varsity Team)
Varsity Team = 176/240 + 48/240 – 36/240
Total 240 = 188/240
P (Honor Roll or Varsity Team) = 47/60
Not Mutually Exclusive 3. Ruby’s dog has 8 puppies. The puppies include white
females, 3 mixed color females, 1 white male, and 2 mixed
color males. Ruby wants to keep one puppy. What is the
probability that she randomly chooses a puppy that is female
and white?
I understand that...
In Every problem, there are many ways or solution to get the Answer. In the
Video Lesson our Math Teacher gave us there are some solutions that I cannot find in there so
I went to the website she gave in her Video lesson that she didn’t said in her video. But there
are some numbers in this worksheet I cannot answer and some term our teacher didn’t
mention in the Video so I went to the internet and find some formulas or solutions to the
number I cannot answer.
I realized that …
We should not stick to the ways we know or our teacher taught us if we
cannot execute it properly. We should find or site some alternative ways that seems easy for us
to use. Just like in solving our Real-life Problems, We should not stick to a solution if we feel that it
is hard to execute. Always remember that in every problem we face, there are many solutions
we can pick to make it eaisier.
