Assignment 3
Analog and Digital VLSI Design
2. Draw the voltage transfer characteristics curve for this circuit and choose appropriate
operating points (i.e., bias point) to make the circuit work as an amplifier. The supply
voltage for this circuit is 5V.
3. Plot the trans-conductance (gm) of the NMOS transistor with the help of appendix of this
document. From the trans-conductance curve obtained, calculate the trans-conductance
value for the operating point that you have chosen. Calculate the small signal (Av1) gain
using Gain expression of NMOS common source amplifier with resistive load
4. With the chosen operating point, perform transient analysis (plot input and output sinusoidal
waveforms) for 3ms to check the amplifier characteristics. Calculate the small signal gain
(Av2) from the input and output waveforms. Refer to the appendix of this document on how
to use small signal AC voltage source. The AC voltage signal parameters are
AC Voltage = 100mV
DC Voltage = Bias voltage calculated in the above question
Delay = 1n or keep it with default value
Frequency = 1 KHz
5. The values of µ nCox and Vth for the model used are 139x10-6A/V2 and 0.7V respectively.
Now for the operating point (vin/vgs) calculate theoretical gm and theoretical small signal
gain (Av3).
6. Comment on the values of small signal gains Av1, AV2, AV3.
The document should be well written and should contain the following
Circuits which performs transfer characteristics and transient analysis
Transfer characteristics curve and Trans-conductance graph. Gm and Bias point for your
case should be marked on the curve clearly like as shown below
3. Right click on the waveform window and click on the “Add Trace” button which pop-ups
the signal selection window.
4. In order to calculate trans-conductance, the drain current need to be differentiated with VGS.
This can be done by writing the equation ‘d(Id… )’ in pop-up window in the “Expression(s)
to add:” space which is shown in the figure below. The ‘d’ indicates differentiation with
respect to X-axis, which is Vgs in this case.
5. After writing equation, click on “OK” to plot the trans-conductance curve which is shown in
figure below. This curve gives the trans-conductance for different Vgs.
6. Plot the output voltage on the same graph which will result in the graph shown below.
Working with DC bias voltage and small signal AC Voltage Source
1. In the schematic window, click on the black arrow of “spice” in components list as shown
below and select “ACVoltage”
