This Study Resource Was: Laboratory Exercise 2 Preparation of Disturbed Soil Sample For Test Objective
Objective:
This laboratory exercise is performed to know the process and the importance in
preparing disturbed soil samples for physical test.
Significance:
A disturbed soil sample does not give as accurate characteristics of soil as what an
undisturbed sample can give. The preparation of a disturbed sample however must be done
properly so that accurate results can be obtained from classifying soils and detemining the soil
suitability for a given job.
Soil samples are prepared for subsequent tests by reducing aggregations of particles into
m
er as
sizes, which will pass certain sieves. A pulverizing device is used and care should be taken not to
break the individual particles.

Procedure:
is
2. Place enough of the sample in the mortar and break up the aggregations with a
rubber-covered pestle. Care should be taken that individual particles are not broken.
Repeat the pulverizing process until there is a sufficient quantity of sample for the
sh
desired test.
3. Obtain the required quantity of sample for each test by the method of quartering or by
a sample splitter.
4. Mix thoroughly the materials passing through No. 4 sieve and weigh the required
quantity, as specified under the size of sample for liquid limit test.

5. Separate the materials retained in No. 4 sieve by means of No. 10 sieve and weigh the
required quantity for specific gravity test. If there is insufficient quantity for the
desired test, grind the materials retained in a mortar with a rubber-covered pestle to
further reduce the size of aggregations.
6. Separate the materials retained in No. 10 sieve by means of No. 40 sieve and weigh
the required quanity for grain size analysis and compaction. Repeat the pulverizing
and sieving operation, if necessary, to obtain a sufficient quantity of sample for
physical test.
7. Label the prepared disturbed soil samples.
