I. Title: Solving Linear Equation in One Variable
II. Learning Competency: Finds the solution of linear equation and inequality in one variable.
(M7AL-Iij-1-2nd Quarter-Week 9)
III. Instructions: This activity sheet focuses on solving linear equation and inequality in one
variable. Read direction for every activity and answer what is asked.
IV. Activities:
Lesson guide 1:

An open sentence is a sentence which becomes true or false when the variable is
replaced by a given value.
An open sentence of the form ax + c = 0 is called a first - degree equation in x.

An open sentence of the form ax + b ¿ 0 , ax +b ≥ 0 , ax+ b<0 ,∨ax=b ≤ 0 is called a firs

degree inequality in x.
Let us consider the first - degree equation:
1. Given, 5 + x = 12, solve for x.
Suppose we replace x by 2. Let us see what will happen.
5 + x = 12
If x = 2, 5+ 2 = 12
This false since 7 ≠ 12
We say that 2 is not a solution of the given equation.
What value are you going to substitute for the variable x to make the equation true?
If your answer is 7, then you are right. Since 5 + 2 =12, it means that 7 must be
replaced for the variable x to make the equation 5 + x = 12 true.
Is that the only value that will make the equation true? Yes, 7 is the only value that
will make the given equation true. We call 7 the solution of the first – degree equation 5 + x =
12 and { 7 }, the solution set.

ACTIVITY 1. Solve the following equations, and include all your solutions on your paper.
1. -6y – 4 = 16
2. 3x + 4 = 5x – 2
3. x-4 - 4x = 6x +9 -8x
4. 4(2a + 2.5) – 3(4a- 1) = 5(4a – 7)

1
Lesson guide 2:

•We have learned in the previous discussion that a first – degree equation in one variable
has only one solution. How many solutions do the first-degree inequalities in one variable
have? Let us discover this by doing the following examples.

Example1. Solve for z. z¿ 5

If z = 1, is the inequality true? _______. No, the inequality is false if z = 1 because 1
is not greater than 5.
Can you give a value that will make the inequality true? _____.
Is that the only value that will make the equation true? Can you give other values?
If your answers are all greater than 5, say 5.1, 5.5, 6, 6.75, 6.9, 7, 8, etc., then you are
correct.
All values of the variables that make the inequality true are called solutions of the given
inequality.
How many solutions does the inequality z ¿ 5 have . ? ___________. You are correct.
That inequality has many solutions. Some solutions of the given inequality are 5.1, 5.5, 6,
6.75, 6.9, 7, and 8.
Based on your observations in the discussion above, when is the inequality True?
__________________ Correct, the inequality is true if the value if the value of z is greater
than 5. Thus, the solution set consists of all real numbers which are greater than 5. In
symbols, the solution set can be written as { z∨z >5 } and is read as”, the set of all z’s such
that z is greater than 5 “. This is the replacement set of z¿ 5with the greatest number of
elements.

Examples:
1. b + 14 ≥ 17

I. Title: Solving Absolute Value Equations and Inequalities

II. Learning Competencies: Solve linear equation or inequality in one variable involving
absolute value (a) graphing; and (b) algebraic methods.(M7AL-Iii-j-1-Qtr. 2-Week 9)

III. Instructions: This activity sheet focuses on solving linear equation and inequality in one
variable involving absolute value. Read the direction for every activity and answer what is
asked.

IV. Activities:
Lesson guide1:
Many absolute value equations are not easy to solve by the guess and check method. An
easier way may be used the following procedure.
Step 1: Let the expression on one side of the equation consist only of a single absolute value
expression.
Step 2: Is the number on the other side of the equation negative? If it is, then the equation
has no solution. If it is not, then proceed to step 3.
Step 3. If the absolute value of an expression is equal to a positive number, say a, then the
expression inside the absolute value can either be a or -a. Equate the expression inside the
absolute value sign to a and -a, and solve both equations.
Example1. Solve |3a -4| -9 = 5

Step 1: Let the expression on one side of the |3a - 4| -11 = 15

Equation consists only of a single absolute |3a - 4| = 26
expression.

Step 2: Is the number on the other side No, it’s a positive number, 26, so
negative? proceed
to step 3
Step 3: To satisfy the equation, the expression 3a – 4 =26 3a – 4 = -26
inside the absolute value can either be +26 or –
26.
These correspond to two equations.

6
Step 4: Solve both equations 3a-4 =26 3a – 4 = -26
3a = 30 3a = -22
a = 10 −22
a=
3
We can check that these two solutions make the original equation true, If a =10, then |3a - 4|
−22 −22
-9 = |3(10) - 4| -9 = 26 – 9 = 15. Also, if a = , then |3a - 4| -9 = |3( ¿ - 4| -9 = |26| -9
3 3
= 15

Step 1: Let the expression on one side of the |5x+ 4| + 12 = 4

Equation consist only of a single absolute |5x+ 4| = -8
expression.

Step 2: Is the number on the other side Yes, it’s a negative number, -8 . There
negative? is no solution because |5x+ 4| can never
be negative, no matter what we
substitute for x.

Example 2: Solve |5x+ 4| + 12 = 4.

Example3. Solve: |c -7| = |2c -2|

Step 1: Let the expression on one side of the Done, because the expression on the
Equation consist only of a single absolute left already consists only of a single
expression. absolute value expression.

Step 2: Is the number on the other side No, because |2c -2| is surely not
negative? negative( the absolute value of a
number can never be negative).
proceed
to step 3
Step 3: To satisfy the equation, the expression c -7 = +(2c -2) c -7 = -(2c -2)
inside the absolute value, c -7 can either be
+(2c -2) or – 2c -2These correspond to two
equations.
Step 4: Solve both equations c -7 = +(2c -2) c -7 = -(2c -2)
c -7 = 2c -2 c -7 = -(2c +2)
-c -7 = -2 3c – 7 = 2
-c = 5 3c = 9
c = -5 C=3

Activity1
Direction: Solve the following absolute value equations.
1. |m| - 3 = 37 6. |2n - 9| = |n + 6|
2. |2v| - 4 = 28 7. |5y + 1| = |3y - 7|

7
3. |5z + 1 = 2 8. |2t + 3| = |2t - 4|
4. |4x + 2| - 3 = -7 9. |6w - 2| = |6w + 18|
5. |3a - 8| + 4 = 11 10. |10 - u| = |u – 10

• In general, absolute value inequality may be a “less than” or a “greater than” type of
inequality ( (either |x| < k or |x| ˃ k), They results in two different solutions, as discussed
below.

Source: Math 7 Learner’s Materials (Quarter 3) p. 28

Example 1. Solve |x - 4| < 18

Step 1. This is a “less than” absolute value -18 < x – 4 < 18

inequality. Set up a double inequality.
Step 2. Solve the double inequality -18 + 4 < x < 18 + 4
-14 < x < 22
Therefore, the solution of the inequality is { x∨−14 < x< 22 }. We can check that choosing a
number in this set will make the original inequality true. Also, numbers outside this set will
not satisfy the original inequality.
Example 2. Solve |2x + 3| ˃ 13

Step 1. This is a “greater than” absolute 2x + 3 < 13 2x + 3 ˃ 13

8
value inequality. Set up two separate
inequalities.
Step 2. Solve the two inequalities 2x + 3 -3 < 13 -3 2x + 3 -3 ˃ 13 -3
2x < -16 2x ˃ 10
x < -8 X˃5

Therefore, the solution of the inequality is { x∨x ←18∨x ˃5 } . This means that all x values
less than -8 or greater than 5 will satisfy the inequality. By contrast, any number between -8
and 5 (including -8 and 5) will not satisfy the inequality.

Example 3: Solve |3x -7| - 4 ≥ 10

Step 1. Isolate the absolute value |3x -7| - 4 ≥ 10

expression on one side.
Step 2: This is a “greater than” absolute 3x -7 ≤ -14 3x -7 ≥ 14
value inequality. Set up two separate
inequalities.
Step 3. Solve the two inequalities 3x -7 ≤ -14 3x -7 ≥ 4
3x +7 ≤ -14 + 7 3x -7 + 7 ≥ 14 + 7
3x ≤ - 7 3x ≥ 21
−7 x ≥7
x ≤

Therefore, the solution of the inequality is x∨x ≤− ∨x ≥7

Activity 2.
Directions: Solve the following absolute value inequalities and choose the letter of the
correct answer from the given choices.

A. a∨a< { −32 ∨a ˃1}
B. a∨a>

C. {a∨a> −32 ∨a<1} D. {a∨a< −32 ∨a<1}

2. Solve for the values of y in the inequality |y - 20| ≤ 4.

C. { y∨16 ≤ y ≤24 } D. { y∨16 ≤ y ≥24 }

3. Find the solution set of |b – 7| ¿ 6.

A. { b∨−13<b< 13 } B. { b∨1<b<13 }

C. { b∨1>b>13 } D. { b∨−13>b> 13 }

4. Solve for c: |c + 12| + 3 ¿ 17

9
A. { c∨c>−2∨c <2 } B. { c∨c>−26∨c<2 }

C. { c∨c<−2∨c >−2 } D. { c∨c<−26∨c>2 }

5. Solve the absolute value inequality |1 – 2c| ¿ 5

A. { c∨3< c <−2 } B. { c∨−3<c <2 }

C. { c∨3> c >−2 } D. { c∨−3>c >−2 }

Solves problems involving algebraic expressions.(M7AL-Iij-2-2nd Quarter-Week 9).

III. Instruction:
This activity sheet focusses on solving problems involving algebraaic expressios.
Below are the activities with regard to this topic. Read the directions of every activity and
answer what is asked.

IV. Activities

Lesson Guide 1.

Equations and inequalities are used to model some real-life situations. This is
successfully done by using your knowledge in translating a verbal sentence into an equation
or inequality.

Example 1.

In 1994, twice the population of a barangay n in Cavite is 50 000. This is modeled by

an equation that is obtained by translating the verbal sentence “Twice n is 50 000.”into an
equation. Thus we have 2 n=50 000 .

Example 2.

The distance d that a vehicle travels is computed by multiplying the rate r by the time
t it consumes. In symbols, this is written as d=rt. What equation represents the time
consumed by a plane in traveling a distance of 1,468 miles at the rate of 400 mi/hr.?
Correct answer: The equation is 1468=400t.

Example 3.

Patrick is 4 inches taller than Manny. The sum of their heights is less than 7 feet.
Represent this by a first degree inequality in one variable.

13
If you use the variable p for Patrick’s height, then Manny’s height is p + 4. (You can
also use other variables.) Thus, your final answer must be p+ p+ 4<7 .

Example 4.

The amount earned by John is three times the amount earned by Armand. What first-
degree inequality in one variable will be used to model the situation if you use the variable a
to represent the amount earned by Armand and their total earnings at least P28,000?
You should have represented the amount earned by John as 3a and your final
answer must be a+ 3 a≥ 28000.

Activity 1.

Direction: Read the following situations and do what is required.

1. Tom’s weight is 2 lbs. less than the weight w of Cherry. Write a first-degree equation in
one variable that represents the sentence “The sum of Tom’s and Cherry’s weights is 210
lbs.”

2. The perimeter p of a rectangle with length l and width w is given by the formula p=2l+2 w
. The length of the top of a rectangular table is 1 m more than its width. What is the first
degree equation in one variable that relates the perimeter and width of the top of that table if
the perimeter is 6 cm.

3. Jenny sold 20 more magazines than Chris. If you use the variable c to represent the
number of magazines sold by Chris, what first-degree equation in one variable represents
the sentence “Five times the total number of magazines sold by Jenny and Chris is ten more
than seven times the number of magazines sold by Jenny.”?

4. The number of P10 coins is 17 decreased by the number of P5 coins. If the variable f is
used to represent the number of P5 coins, how will you represent the following:

4.1 number of P10 coins in terms of 1

4.2 value of P5 coins
4.3 value of P10 coins
4.4 first degree mathematical sentence in one variable for “ The value of all coins is
at most P110.”

5. Let d be the distance ran by Henry. Diego ran a third as far as Henry. Write the first-
degree equation that models the statement “The distance ran by Henry is four times the
distance ran by Diego.”

V. Closure
Some real-life situations are modeled by equations or inequalities. To do this, we
translate the verbal sentence into an equation or inequality.
