Friendship
A famous philosopher Euripides once said, “Friends show their love in times of
trouble, not in happiness” The presence of friends makes our lives worthwhile but it is really
difficult to find a good friend who will be with us in all circumstances of life. What is
friendship? According to the dictionary, “Friendship is a close association between two
people marked by feelings of care, respect, admiration, concern, or even love.” Friendship is
the most beautiful bond one can have and in the story To Kill A Mockingbird, w e can see
several examples. The most interesting example of them all is the friendship between Boo
Radley and the children which is like like the beautiful shadows of evening, spreading and
growing till life and its light pass away. Maycomb’s intimate setting, created by Harper Lee
in To Kill a Mockingbird, exemplifies the bonds of friendship between certain characters such
as Boo Radley and the children, Miss Maudie and the Finch Family, the unbreakable bond
between Jem, Scout and Dill and Walter Cunningham’s friendship with Atticus.
The most peculiar and fascinating friendship is between Boo and the children. Boo
would leave presents for Scout and Jem in the oak tree to try to show the two of them how
much he cared about them. When Jem got his pants stuck and torn in the fence behind the
Radley house, he returned to get them and found them folded and mended. Boo is indeed
watching out for the kids. On the night of the fire, when Jem and Scout were standing on the
sidewalk, Boo came and put a blanket around Scout who was cold, which further shows that
he really cared about them. Boo also saved the children from Bob Ewell at the end of the
book. Boo was willing to lay down his life for Scout and Jem even though the children
dehumanized him in the beginning of the story. Boo feels such a fondness for the children
that he even has their images memorized in his head well enough to carve their figures into
soap. He tries to extend a hand of friendship through all of these gifts. At the end, after he
saves their lives, he is so worried about Jem that Scout takes him back to Jem's room where
Boo gently reaches out and touches him to see if he's okay. This scene is a touching one
where we see Boo's true friendly affection for the kids; he exhibits friendship love. An
important lesson that we can learn with this circumstance is not to judge someone who may
be a little different, they might end up being the best friend that you were longing for.
Miss Maudie is a true and loyal friend to Atticus and she supports him and his legal
decision to take on the case of Tom Robinson. She supports the Finch family before and after
the controversial trial of Tom Robinson. She is quick to encourage Jem following the trial.
Neighbor Miss Maudie Atkinson serves as a sort of advisor to Scout in To Kill a
Mockingbird. She dispatches words of wisdom and sometimes explains to the children the
reasons behind some of Atticus' decisions. She is also a friend and confidante to Scout, who
knows she can trust Maudie. She also explains to Scout and Jem that Atticus is no ordinary
man, but an extraordinary one. Another example of friendship can be the friendship between
Dill, Scout and Jem. Dill is an unusual boy, but there are many circumstances throughout the
book which shows that the children have accepted him and care for him. When Dill does not
come for a summer vacation, Scout expresses sorrow which shows a sign of friendship.
Whenever Dill comes to Maycomb, the children rejoice and play together but also get
themselves into several situations. However, they always stay together.
There are indeed many fascinating lessons on friendship in To Kill A
Mockingbird and Harper Lee created characters that are so compelling and complex. A good
friend might be someone who provides support when times are tough, or someone you can
rely on to celebrate a special moment with you. This is the main reason why the example of
the friendship between Boo and the kids perfectly fit. Many life lessons and inspirations can
be learnt from the characters itself.
