SWELL 191 – Beginning Weight Training

Learning Outcomes:
o Students will be able to perform general assessment techniques for posture, mobility
and stability
o Students will learn how to address issues in posture, muscular imbalances, mobility and
stability
o Students will learn fundamental techniques to back squat, front squat, OHP, Deadlift,
RDL, etc.
o Students will learn proper gym etiquette and feel more confident in a gym environment

How Learning Outcomes Occur:


o Students will have first-hand experience assessing their own posture, mobility and
stability of certain joints
o Students will be given exercises and resources to learn how to correct posture and
improve joint mobility and stability
o Students will be taught safe and proper lifting techniques and practice them first-hand
o Students will learn the “ins and outs” of a gym environment. Students will have working
knowledge of gym equipment and how to operate all types of equipment and machines

Grading
• This course is a PASS/FAIL
• Students must meet the following criteria to pass this course
1. ATTENDANCE! Must pass with 80% or higher, or no more than 5 absent hours
2. Pass WRITTEN exam with a 75% or higher
3. Must pass exam by the end of the third week of the class.
Students who fail to meet the above criteria will receive a Fail (E) grade, which will be reflected
on your GPA

Attendance/Participation
• Attendance is the primary component of this class. If you want to pass, you must attend.
• In addition to attending class, YOU MUST PARTICIPATE in a minimum of 80% of the
classes. There is no such thing as an excused absence for University business. The
purpose of the allowed absences is to accommodate for illness, injury, or University
business.
o For twice a week semester classes or 4 times a week block and Spring/Summer
term classes, this equals no more than 5 class periods missed.
o For twice a week block or Spring/Summer term classes and once a week
semester classes, this equals no more than 2 class periods missed.
o For once a week block classes, this equals no more than 1 class period missed.
• Excessive tardiness is not acceptable. Three (3) incidences of tardiness equals one (1)
absence. If a student arrives after class begins, it will count as a tardy. If a student
arrives 10 minutes or more after the start of class or leaves early, it will count as an
absence.
• Students adding late can make up classes missed prior to adding during a 2-week period
following the add/drop deadline. They should see the instructor for options immediately
upon adding the course.
• A student incurring a prolonged injury or illness resulting in more than the allowed
absences can withdraw from the class prior to the withdrawal deadline (see academic
calendar). Students with a prolonged injury occurring after the withdraw deadline can
petition to withdraw at petitions.byu.edu. Call (801) 422-2631 with questions about the
petition process.

Written Exam

A written examination must be taken in the TESTING CENTER.

The exam MUST be taken by the end of the third week of classes.

Please Note the Following:


1. The exam will cover materials taught and/or referred to in class.
2. If a better grade is desired, a test may be retaken any number of times. Retakes are
available for $5.00 fee.
3. A 24-hour period is required between test retakes. If you fail the test on the last day
offered, you CANNOT take the test again.
4. A $5.00 late fee will be charged to your account beginning at 8am on the last day of the
exam if you haven’t taken and passed the exam.

Dress and Attire


A t-shirt and shorts/sweats/leggings are required for your participation in an activity
class.
Clothing shall be modest, clean and properly mended. Shirts must cover the shoulders
and full torso. Shorts/sweats/leggings must reach at least mid-thigh. Inappropriate logos
or sayings will not be tolerated. Proper footwear is also required and varies according to
the activity and facility. For this class, none shall wear: Flipflops, sandals, boots, slip-ons,
slippers, etc. Please wear athletic/tennis shoes.

Injury
Any injury occurring during scheduled class time should be immediately reported to
your instructor.

The Learning Resource Center (194 SFH) is an excellent tool for improving specific skills
taught in this class. There you will find numerous books and videos designed to help you
develop and polish your skills.
