FLORA AND FAUNA
VAST CLIMATIC VARIATIONS OF ARUNACHAL PRADESH HAVE RESULTED IN THE EXISTENCE OF
ALMOST ALL TYPES OF TIMBER WEALTH RANGING FROM THE TROPICAL TEAK LIKE SPECIES OF THE
FOOTHILLS JUNGLES , TO THE CONIFERS OF THE HIGH MOUNTAINS. ARUNACHAL PRADESH IS
FAMOUS FOR RARE SPECIES OF ORCHIDS, WHICH ARE FOUND IN ALL TYPES OF FORESTS,
ALTITUDINAL RANGES, AND RAINFALL CONDITIONS. THE MANY UNSPOILT TREE-CLAD SLOPES
CONTAIN TIGERS, LEOPARDS, ELEPHANTS, DEERS, BEARS AND APES. THE MITHUN, OR ‘BOS
FRONTALIS’ EXISTS BOTH IN WILD AND SEMI-DOMESTICATED FORM.
• Forest Types: Arunachal is the land of green gold. Due to the variation in altitudes and
climatic conditions, different places of Arunachal Pradesh have different types of forests.

• Tropical:
• 1.Northern Tropical Semi-evergreen Forests.
• 2.Northern Tropical Evergreen Forests.
• 3.Northern Tropical Moist Deciduous Forests.
• 4.Secondary Bamboo Breaks
• Sub-tropical:
• 1.East Himalayan Sub-tropical broad leafed Forests.
• 2.Sub-tropical Pint Forests.

• Temperate Forests:
• 1.Temperate broad leafed Forests.
• 2.Temperate Conifer Forests.
• 3.Sub-alpine Woody shrub.
• 4.Alpine Meadow (Montane tundra)
FLORA

• Condusive climate, edaphic factors and the geographical location of the district give rise
to luxurious vegetation rich in diversity. Some of the important tree species are
Hollock(Terminalia, myriocarpa), Khokan(Duabanga grandiflora), Mekai, Simul,
Titachampa(Michalia Champaca) and Gamari(Gmelina arborea).The bamboo of the
variety Dendrocalamus Hamiltonii is found in abundance. Different varieties of canes are
commonly found in the area.
• The vegetation of Arunachal Pradesh falls under four broad climatic categories and can
be classified in five broad forest types with a sixth type of secondary forests.These are
tropical forests, sub tropical forests, pine forests, temperate forests and alpine forests
• orchids in Arunachal Pradesh are in bloom throughout the year.The orchid is valued for
its flower. Nature with its own system makes special features to its flower that has
unparallel beauty and appeal.
• Coptis teeta(Mishmi teeta) This is a temperate herb found only in Arunachal Pradesh. It
can be cultivated as under planting. Propagation is through seeds.The roots are sold for
treatment of variety of diseases.

FAUNA

• The wildlife of Arunachal is equally rich and varied. Elephants and tigers abound, especially
in the grassy foothills and the leopard and jungle cat are quite common.The white
browed gibbon is found in Tirap and Lohit districts and red pandas and musk deer in the
higher ranges.
• The ‘Mithun’ (Bos Frontails), exists both in wild and semi-domesticated form.This animal
has a religious significance and has relation with socio-cultural life of the people.
Traditionally, mithun is a unit of wealth and is allowed to move freely in the jungle till it is
either used for food on festive occasions and marriage feasts, or for barter.
• The Mehao wildlife sanctuary was established in the Sixth Plan and Namdapha sanctuary
was upgraded to the status of a national park in 1983.‘Project Tiger’ was also launched in
Namdapha in 1983.The Mouling Reserve Forest in East Siang district, covering an area of
483 sq kms, has been declared a national park in 1986.
