THE LION AND THE MOUSE

Once a lion was sleeping under a tree in a thick forest. A mouse jumped on to its
body and started playing. The lion woke up and got angry with the mouse. He caught it. The
mouse begged him to leave it. The lion took pity on it and let it go. Thanking the lion, the
mouse promised him that it would help him in times of need. One day, trapped by a hunter
the lion roared for help. The mouse came and freed him cutting the net with its sharp teeth.
They became good friends.

Moral of the story:

Love and kindness are never wasted. You can accomplish by kindness which you
cannot by force.

Self-reflection:
My opinion on the story is- although the mouse is a small animal it has its own talent.
If the lion would not have left the mouse, the life of the lion would be in danger. So, everyone
has their own talent. We should not underestimate anyone.
Unit II- Project Work
Humourous story
THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES.

Once there lived an Emperor who spent all his money on getting new clothes for himself as
he was very fond of them.
One day two men came to the court of the emperor and claimed that they could weave the
most special and beautiful cloth in the world for the emperor which only wise people could see. The
emperor gave them a lot of money and ordered them to begin their work at once.
The two men setup two looms and acted to be working on them but there was nothing on the
looms. They then asked the king to give them the finest silk and purest gold thread. They put those
in their bags and acted working on the empty looms until late night.
The minister who was sent by the king to the weaver’s room could not find anything on the
loom. When he was asked by the weavers about the beauty of the cloth, he replied that the cloth
was splendid as he did not want him to be treated as a fool though he knew that the loom was
empty.
Next the king and his officials too have praised the cloth to be splendid though they could not
see anything there.
At last the weavers said that the cloth is ready, they cut it with a pair of scissors in the air
and stitched the clothes with needles without any thread in them.
Though the king and his officials could see nothing they admitted that the dress was
beautiful.
Afraid of accepting the truth, the king took off his clothes and pretended to be putting on the
new clothes as asked by the weavers.
During the procession of the emperor, the public praised that the emperor’s clothes were
beautiful though they knew the truth until a little child said that the king had got nothing on. The king
felt greatly ashamed and unhappy. He knew the people were right but the procession had to go on.
Analysis of the story

"The Emperor's New Clothes" is a Danish: literary folktale written by Danish author Hans
Christian Andersen, about a vain emperor who gets exposed before his subjects. The tale has been
translated into over 100 languages

The “logical argument” that the characters are purposefully avoiding is presented at the end
of the story by the young and innocent boy. The boy breaks the others out of their self-deception,
with his proclamation that “the Emperor isn’t wearing anything at all!”

How humour is created in this story: It is a very funny piece that appeals to all ages. The
basic fact that no one can voice against the emperor has created the chaos. The minister
pretending to see a cloth on the loom which was empty begins the humor in this story followed by
the emperor and his officials acting to see an empty loom with a splendid cloth. The humour
reached its peaks when the emperor walks naked on the roads under self-deception.

The Grasshopper and the Ant

A grasshopper who lived in field near a big forest was fond of dancing all day long. He spent
the day dancing and watching the stars and the moon at night. He used to go to the mountains and
watch the distant ocean and beautiful hills.

One day he saw an ant which looked very tired and hot as he was preparing food for the
winter. When grasshopper asked the ant about the reason for hard work the ant replied that it was
collecting food for winter. The grasshopper continued dancing all summer.

When winter came, due to snow fall there was no food to eat for the grasshopper. So he
went to ant and asked for food.

The ant said that it was busy collecting food in summer when the grasshopper was busy
dancing. As the grasshopper did not work hard in summer, he has to starve in winter.

Moral of the story:

Always prepare for hard times in the future.

Self-reflection:
My opinion on the story is- People who plan for their future will always be happy. In the same
way students who work hard in their educational career need not suffer when they grow up. Even the
smallest animal has a good moral to teach us which is applicable to all ages.

Humourous story
The Clever Ramalinga
Many years ago, there lived a poet named Ramalinga in the court of Vijayanagara. He was a
very clever man. He used to solve witty solutions to the trouble makers’ questions in the court.
Ramalinga’s wife had a lot of jewels which she wore in the day and put them in a box during night.

The two servants of Ramalinga who were rouges decided to steal the jewels that night.
Ramalinga overheard them planning to steal the jewels that night. At 11 pm, when they looked into
Ramalinga’s bedroom the couple were not asleep. Knowing the servants were nearby, Ramalinga
asked his wife aloud to put the jewels in a box and drop it in the well as nobody will look there for
jewels. Replacing the jewels with stones, he dropped the box into the well.

Assuming it to be box of jewels, the servants started drawing water from the well all night.
The water drawn from well flowed into the garden.

As dawn was approaching, the thieves planned to return at night, Ramalinga called them
and thanked them for watering the garden. He also told them that there were no jewels in the box
and he ordered them to leave the place at once.

Analysis of the story

This is a story from the collection of “Stories of Witty Ramalinga”. The main character is well
known for his wit and humour. Though most of the stories are fictitious they appear as facts. It is
because they are weaved with real life people and incidents. Most of the stories have a moral
underlying in them. The wit and humour is touching to all ages.
Greed and cheating the trusted have been the negative thoughts in the society since ages. In
this story too, the servants whom Ramalinga believed turned out to be cheaters. They, in the disguise
of trust, wanted to rob their master. It was because of the cleverness of Ramalinga that he could save
himself from the cheaters.
How humour is created in this story: Ramalinga, being a courtier could have easily complained the
king about the thieves, but his witty nature made him teach the thieves a lesson. He telling his wife to
put the box of jewels in the well sparks humour. Thereafter the thieves putting all their effort to drain
water from well to get hold on jewels is a funny incident. The moral to teach a lesson to imposters is
in a funny way.

1. Do we learn anything from the films?
2. What do you think after watching a film?
3. Does anything that happened in the movies remind you of something that has occurred in
your own life?
4. What is unique about theatre?
5. What is the importance of theatre in present times?
6. Which one do you like watching the most- Films or Theatre?

Article on Film & theatre.

Films are stories or events recorded by a camera as a set of moving images and shown in
the form of cinema or on television.
Theatre is a collaborative form of performing art that uses live performers on stage to
showcase a story or an event.
The difference between the movies and live theatre is that live theatre has more
involvement. An actor in the movie will be able to get lots of chances to get their role correct as
movies go from scene to scene. A theatre actor would need to do every scene perfectly every time.
The most significant difference between film and theatre is the relationship between the
performer and the audience. Acting is a part of our everyday lives. Despite global influences,
contemporary theatre tends to maintain the uniform and traditional styles of the country of
production.

Self-reflection :

Cinema connects different cultures and reflects the society through fiction or real-based
stories. It keeps us aware of things happening around us in the community.

Certain movies create false notions and stereotypes that defame certain sections of the
community and people. It generates employment, encourages creativity, and boosts the economy of
the country.
