PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF COLUMN

In our plan elevation, we chose column which has maximum influence area of 20 m2
including the area of column. It is the intermediate column and carries maximum axial
load. The column of ground floor is designed and it has maximum axial load than above
all. We have considered maximum 3% of steel reinforcement. We consider M25 grade
mix and Fe500 bars in the column. Assume initial size as 600*600 mm2
Load Calculation:
Dead Load of Slab = 25*0.15*20 = 75 KN

Dead Load of Beam = 25*0.5*0.35*(5+4) = 39.375 KN

Live Load (LL) = 4 KN/m2

Floor Finish (FP) = 1 KN/m2

LL + FP on influence area = 5*20= 100 KN

Dead load of column = 25*0.6*0.6*2.8 = 25.2 KN

Wall Partition load = 19*0.65*(5+4)*0.23*2.8=71.58 KN

Total Load = Sum of above loads = 311.155 KN

Factored Load= 1.5* Total Load

= 1.5* 311.155

= 466.7325 KN

Factored Load = 466.7325 KN per floor for critical column

Total Factored load to be bore by our designed column = 12*466.7325 = 5601 KN

For axially loaded short column (From Code IS456:2000 Cl 39.3 )

Pu = 0.4fck*Ac + 0.67*fy*Ast
5601*1000=0.4*25*0.97*Ag + 0.67*500*0.03*Ag(%steel = 3%, fck = 25MPa,
fy=500KN/m2)
Solving for Ag,
Ag = 283594.9367 mm2
D = ( Ag )0.5 = 532.536 mm
Hence, adopting 600mm x 600mm column size.
