The ways that social and economic changes have created a need for more child care services is the growth in cultural diversity, family life, the economy, and public support. 3. Why do companies provide child care? Companies provide childcare because it provides tangible payoffs, positive effects on recruitment, job satisfaction, loyalty, and productivity, it also reduces turnover absenteeism, it provides better public relations, tax benefits, ease of scheduling and improved quality of the workforce. Companies provide on-site child care because it provides the opportunity to observe and interact with children during lunch, ability to feed or breast feed infants, save time in the drop-off and pick-up process, ability to attend celebrations and birthdays. 4. What is the difference between a nanny and an au pair? The difference between a nanny and an au pair is the nanny provides care in the child’s home. Depending on the parents’ needs nannies live in the families’ home or on their own. In addition to their wages, they may receive health insurance, paid holidays, and room and board. An au pair is a person from another country who temporarily lives with a family and performs tasks similar to those of a nanny. In exchange for weekly pay, room, board, transportation, and an opportunity to learn the family’s language, the au pair provides child care and may do homework. 5. What is the primary function of a licensing specialist? The primary function of a licensing specialist is to protect and promote the health, safety, and welfare of children attending centers. 6. Give two job opportunities in which education in early childhood is helpful. Explain how a background in early childhood is helpful in those jobs. One job in early childhood that would be helpful would be a parent educator because you would work with the parent to help them learn competent and confident parenting skills. Another job in early childhood that would be helpful is a community recreation leader and children’s art, dance, music, and sports instructor because you would be able to create television shows, books, toys, music, and magazines for young children. 7. Why should teachers develop a style that suites their personalities? Teachers should develop a style that suits their personality because they will feel more comfortable as well as find more enjoyment in their profession. 12. Give two common characteristics of successful early childhood teachers and explain why the characteristics are helpful. One common characteristic of successful early childhood teacher is passion for children. Having a passion for children is helpful because it helps children develop intellectually, socially, and emotionally. Another common characteristic of successful early childhood teachers is patience. Having patience is helpful because it helps the children grow and learn while building their self-esteem.
