A. Summary of the story
The Little People by Maria Aleah G. Taboclaon
When a girl is nine years old, she and her family could not handle the noise that came from
the ceiling and that was obviously the elves that are continuously working and stepping
loudly. They heard them until night and kept them awake also. Then one night, the noise was
so unbearable that their father trying to talk the elves and let them sleep, but there was no
response. After a few minutes, they were shocked because suddenly the banging stopped and
then let them peacefully sleep. And when the day came, by six o’clock in the morning the
banging was begin started and the noise was louder this time, that the father was so frustrated
and they just decided to do their own tasks or things to do, her mother was started to sweep,
the father would start cooking, and a nine year old started to prepare the table while his
another sister planting with their cousin and his little brother was not expected to colour his
own books. Afterwards, they were now comfortable with the elves at their house living in the
ceiling, the daily routine of waking up every six o’clock in the morning and let them sleep at
eleven o’clock in the evening. All in all it was a good relationship between the family and
elves. After three weeks, the first week of May, the nine years old girl accidentally met the
old and healer elf, his name is Prax, she was accidentally fell to the ground after climbing in
the mango tree and caused to injury in her ankle, she tried to stand up and go back in the
house, but she can’t, then the old elf, Prax massage her swollen injury and she just want to
pretend sleeping, but can’t handle her curiosity and want to see if who was with her helping
to heal and recover her injury. And the magic healed her when she woke up and Prax
disappeared before her wake up.She hurriedly went to her parents, but instead of being glad
that she was fine, they were act as scared and unconvinced because they really know and
thought elves was not a good one to deal with, and could maybe brought a bad lack for them
if she continuously talked about elves.
They warned their daughter, but she was still imagining if she could play with the elves and
especially her friend Prax, sadly she did not see Prax again, when the day that she went to a
new public school which is she has no friends and her classmates are not friendly and
avoiding her, she decided to sit far from the teacher’s table, after that, the math exam was
started and they did not let her to give an answer, so she was still finding an answer while

looking up in the ceiling, then after a few minutes she was shocked and saw a second elf,
namely as Bat. Bat helped her after asking for apology because he told that he was waiting to
recognize. The days passed by, they were friends and Bat continuously helping the girl from
the homework and seatwork. Later on, Bat confessed her feelings to the girl, he asked her to
be with him and live as an elf, but of course she was not agreed and even thought the
difference of their life as human and an elf. Aside of, she has no feelings for Bat, that made
the situation worst and a nightmare. Bat was vanished and she no longer sees him after the
day of vanishing. Then after a days, the beginning of night was started, Prax told to her
dreams, Bat will be her enemy and be careful, then one day she felt sick and her parents
decided to call again the abularyo for helping her to get recover, but the old ritual they did
before was not effective anymore, and she continuously felt that illness, Then there is
something happened too, her mother had a miscarriage, that starting her to believed that it
was Bat, that Prax told her. And now, when she was twelve years old, her cousin died
because of what happened after fell to the ground from the ceiling with her father, they were
actually went there to see the elves and offer a food. After another year, her brother died
because of the accident, he was run over by a service van and the driver was imprisoned, after
the six months, the next is her father drowned while fishing. They were only three left, the
mother, sister and her. A sadly part, after the death of her father, her mother died also even
others think of them as crazy after all that they were told the truths and facts about what
happened. They left and they are now with their relatives, but expectedly after the days to be
with their relatives, their foster parents died of some reasons too, though it was fate because
of Bat. After leaving again with her sister, they got accident and her sister died, and shes still
alive, she was now alone, traumatic, and sad. She lived now in a dormitory, and decided to go
in college with the inheritance from her foster parents. While was sleeping, Prax occurred in
her dreams and told her to get that book that could help her to defeat against Bat. After that,
she met again Bat after long years, and Bat still asked her to be with him or die and she have
this plan to put them away from her and be safe at her own. She started to ask Bat to wait and
count to one hundred and she will be right back, but she was starting now the ritual that will
make Bat vanished, and the plans are successful. Prax told her that if he found out that book
in an early, he can save the family of the girl. She gave a kiss to an old elf, knowing that they
were never see each other again. She watched him while fade away, the last family that she
has.. After she woke up, she went to her desk and started to remember where it all began.
B. Analysis of the Selected Element/s

SETTING:
Residence of the young girl/narrator- it is where the elves are discovered in their ceiling of
their house.
The Supernatural World- it is where the elves truly lived.
New Public School- A place when she was a nine years old during her elementary days.
Dormitory- A place wherein she was all alone during her college life.
THEME:
The theme of the story is about courage, independence and fate. It was a kind of story that the
emotions and expressions in this short story is full packed, but the most emotion of being
expressed was sacredness, sadness and loneliness.
It is a short story, that talks about the courageous or braveness to face the problem, to get the
chance to solve and accomplish the goal. The fate will define your life, but the braveness of
the soul to fight and recover from the things that happened in life will make you as
independent and wise person.
This theme will give an important lesson to all especially the way we decided for things that
has no assurance and impossible. It helps you to realize the good and bad decisions when you
chose it.
C. Personal Perspective/Insights
After I read the short story, honestly I have the idea of the theme because of the title of the
story, this is will be a great made up story created by a local author, her name is Maria Aleah
G, Taboclaon, that could let the readers how will they act if they got the situation of this
unreal or unbelievable creatures.
My own perspective regarding first in elves, I believed on this too because if they said that
God created all things, animals and humans, elves are one of them. They can’t maybe
describe as those mentioned that created of God, but I surely elves existed also from many
ways or things that happened in this world. Now, my insight when it talks about the whole
short story of the author, it is pertaining to the people that should be more wise and smart to
think it first, like in decision making in our life. Decision making is a way that will lead you

to your future life. Maybe we can excuse that being a young or child can’t make a decision,
but there is still a parents, relatives, and real friends that can make you help to decide or think
the final decisions in life. They are your secondary guide, but you are primarily liable to all
the actions that you made up. Try to listen, and make a realization of what will be the
outcome if you chose something to have it.
