Title: “Decoloring”
A project to produce a monotone interactive world, which will be publish through online using
VR/AR. It is to help people to understand more about the difficulty that colour blindness faces.
Research question:
How can VR/AR gamification help the society to understand and experience what the colour
blindness world looks like?
Focus point*
“ Colors on food impact is important; it may create an unbalanced diet. “
Color is a powerful communication tool that can be used to signal action, influence physiological
reactions, and even influence our mood. Certain colors have been associated with increases in
metabolism, blood pressure, and eyestrain.
(Iryna Timonina, 2021)
There are four types of colour blindness, that is deuteranopia, tritanopia, protanopia and
complete colour blindness. The most common type of colour blindness is protanopia and
deuteranopia, it makes it hard to tell the difference between red and green. The less-common
type of colour blindness is Tritanopia, it is hard to tell the difference between blue and green,
and between yellow and red. It also makes colours look less bright. Complete colour blindness
is called monochromacy, it is quite uncommon and for that symptom you would be having
problems seeing clearly and may be more sensitive to light. (Types of Color Blindness | National
Eye Institute, 2021)
We often rely on differences in colour to know if the food is good, bad, cooked or ripe, when to
stop or go at the traffic light, which is the cold or hot tap in the shower, how to navigate the train
station (or any transport)map, to differentiate elements of bar or pie charts, to tell one sports
team from another etc. ( team, 2021) The importance of using colour to distinguish and
differentiate is a common feature in our everyday life. There would be people that you would
come across that are colour blind, they are not blind people they just can’t differentiate colours.
Most colour blind people have vision as clear as everyone else, but they are unable to perceive
red green, or blue light. ( Is it red or green? - Colour Vision Optical, 2021) Colour blindness does not
mean that you cannot see any colours. It means that you cannot define a certain colour in your
life.
How the environment looks in each type of colour blindness.
How the meat looks in a type of deuteranopia colour blindness.
Most red/green colour blind people won’t know if they’ve cooked a piece of meat rare or well done
because they can’t distinguish the colour tone. They are unlikely to be able to tell the difference
between green and tomatoes or between rare meat and ketchup sauce. (Living with Colour Vision
Deficiency - Colour Blind Awareness, 2021)
As a child it is quite difficult for them to learn as there is a lack of colour for them to differentiate.
Colour blind children can be fussy over green vegetables as the colour that they see on the
vegetable looks like cow pat and they would mostly refer to it as poo. Unfortunately, there is no
known cure for color blindness. There are contact lenses and glasses with filters to help color
deficiencies. The symptoms of color blindness are often observed by their parents when they
are young. There are also symptoms that are slight, that they may not even notice. (Color
blindness – Symptoms and Treatments for Color Blindness : Bausch + Lomb, 2021)
In conclusion, people should appreciate and understand the importance of colour by
understanding what does the colour blind difficulty is in their daily life. The best ways to educate
the society about colour blindness is letting them experience the colour blind world through
gamification.
