Cement Consumption in PCC 1:5:10 and M5: What Is Types of Concrete For PCC?
Generally PCC is stand for plain cement concrete which has a mix of cement
sand and aggregate in fixed proportion. PCC generally made by lean concrete
and ordinary concrete.
Generally lean concrete and ordinary concrete is used for levelling course
bedding for footing and making concrete road and pavement.
Generally M5 and M7.5 grade of concrete is used as lean concrete. Its main
application is to provide uniform surface for the foundation which prevent the
foundation from direct contact of soil.
Wv = wet volume = 15 m2
Mix ratio in M5 grade = 1:5:10 one part cement 5 part is sand and 10 part is
aggregate.
Total proportion = 1+5+10=16

Proper calculation and relative proportioning of materials are very important to produce
cost-effective good quality of concrete. This article will explain you the simple
techniques used by engineers to calculate cement, sand, coarse aggregate(gravel or
Jalli) and water needed to prepare different concrete grades like M5, M7.5, M10, M15
and M20.
If you don’t want learn the calculations you can use the quantities given in the table at
the end of each topic to produce different grades of concrete.
The calculations and results given in this article are cross verified with different
standards and trusted sources like IS456, IS10262 and government’s Rate of Analysis.
For example, if the concrete is M20 grade, it means the concrete will attain the
characteristic compressive strength of 20 Newton per millimeter square in 28 days after
curing.
Concrete Mix Ratio by Volume
Concrete mix ratios are prescribed ratio of cement, sand and aggregate to get the
desired strength in concrete. The volumetric mix ratio of M20 concrete is 1:1.5:3, hence
1 part of cement, 1.5 part of sand and 3 part of aggregate in volume is needed to
prepare M20 grade concrete.
Mix Ratio
Concrete Grade Compressive Strength
(Cement : Sand : Aggregate)
M5 1:5:10 5 N/mm2
However, above concrete mix ratios may not be accurately followed in the construction
site. This may be due to a few reasons such as to increase workability (by increasing
fine aggregate – River sand and M sand) or to reduce cost (by reducing cement
content) etc.,
Excess reducing of cement content or increase of sand content will adversely affect the
strength of concrete. Hence it is advisable not to increase the fine aggregate (river sand
and M sand) content more than 30% above the prescribed ratio in any case.
Method 1: Calculating cement sand and coarse aggregate in volume and weight
from Nominal Concrete Mix Ratio
Method 2: Calculating the weight of sand and aggregate needed per bag of cement
(50kg bag) using Total weight of aggregate value given in IS codebook
Many websites are giving different value for “total dry volume”, but the values given
above have been personally verified, many times, and they are in par with different
government’s Rates of Analysis.
1. Cement = 1 Part
2. Sand = 1.5 Part
3. Aggregate = 3 Part
4. Total dry volume of Material Required = 1.57 cu.m
Volume of cement needed = Ratio of cement x 1.57/(1+1.5+3)
= 1 x 1.57/5 .5
= 0.285 cu.m
= 1.5 x 1.57/5 .5
= 0.427 cu.m
= 0.427 x 32
= 0.854 cu.m
Weight of Cement required for 1 cubic meter of M20
Grade concrete
Weight of cement required can be calculated from multiplying the volume of cement with
the bulk density of cement. The bulk density of frequently used cement varieties (both
PPC and OPC) is 1440 kg/cu.m.
= 8.2 bags
Hence 8 bags of cement required to prepare one cubic meter of M20 grade concrete.
= 8.2 bags
=0.427 x 35.32
= 15.08 cft
= 30.16 cft
Hence 15.08 cft of sand and 30.16 cft of aggregate is requied to prepare one cubic
meter of M20 grade concrete.
*As I have explained above, while calculating M7.5 and M5 grade concrete, total dry
material required for concrete is taken as 1.52 instead of 1.55 and quantity of sand and
aggregate is adjusted for M10 and M5 based on experience.
TOTAL AGGREGATE
CONCRETE GRADE
( FINE + COARSE )
M5 800 kg
M 7.5 625 kg
M 10 480 kg
M 15 330 kg
M 20 250 kg
The general ratio of fine aggregate to coarse aggregate is 1:2, but it can be adjusted
between 1:1.5 to 1:2.5 based on the grading of fine aggregate and size of coarse
aggregate.
1. Sand = 1 Part
2. Aggregate = 2 Part
3. Total aggregate required = 250 kg
Sand needed per bag of cement = Ratio of sand x 250 /(1+2)
= 1 x 250 /(1+2)
= 83 kg ~ 85 kg
= 170 kg
