cement consumption in PCC 1:5:10 and M5,How to calculate quantity of cement

in PCC,in this topic we know about how to calculate quantity of cement in PCC
and cement consumption in PCC 1:5:10.we know that we have several grade
of concrete like M5, M7.5, M10, M15, M20 and M25  and so more- and discuss
about water cement ratio for m5 grade of concrete

Generally PCC is stand for plain cement concrete which has a mix of cement
sand and aggregate in fixed proportion. PCC generally made by lean concrete
and ordinary concrete.

Generally lean concrete and ordinary concrete is used for levelling course
bedding for footing and making concrete road and pavement.

What is types of concrete for pcc?

There are two types of concrete for PCC lean concrete and ordinary concrete

what is lean concrete?

Grade of concrete which have amount of cement is lower than the amount of
liquid present in strata is known as lean concrete.

Generally M5 and M7.5 grade of concrete is used as lean concrete. Its main
application is to provide uniform surface for the foundation which prevent the
foundation from direct contact of soil.

what is ordinary concrete?

PCC which is made of M10 and M15 grade of concrete known as ordinary
concrete which has medium amount of cement present in mix. Its main
function is to providing bedding for footing and making concrete road and
pavement.
cement consumption in PCC 1:5:10
and M5
M5 grade of concrete
in m5 grade of concrete M stand for mix and numerical figure 5 is stand for
compressive strength of 150 mm cube size after 28 days of curing. So
compressive strength of m5 grade of concrete is 5N/mm^ 2 and mix ratio in
m5 grade of concrete is about 1:5:10 in which one part is cement 5 Part is
sand and 10 part is aggregate.

cement consumption in PCC 1:5:10

M5 concrete ratio:- M stand for mix and numerical figure 5 is compressive
strength of concrete is 5N/mm2 for curing time of 28 days and M5 concrete
ratio is 1 : 5 : 10, mixture of cement, sand and aggregate in which one part is
cement, 5 part is sand and 10 part is aggregate or stone mix with water.

Suppose we have project of making concrete pavement of area 100m2 and

slab thickness of PCC is 150 mm.

Area = 100 sq.m

Thickness = 150 mm = 0.15 m

Wet volume of concrete= 100m2×0.15m

Wv = wet volume = 15 m2

Now we have to calculate dry volume calculating dry volume we should

multiply a cofactor 1.54 in wet volume.

Now dry volume of concrete= 15m2×1.54

Dry volume = 23.1 m2

Mix ratio in M5 grade = 1:5:10 one part cement 5 part is sand and 10 part is
aggregate.
Total proportion = 1+5+10=16

aggregate quantity consumption in pcc 1:5:10

Part of aggregate in mix = 10/16

1m3 = 35.32 cuft

Dry volume =23.1 m3

Volume of aggregate = (10/16)×23.1 × 35.32 cuft

Calculate Cement Sand & Aggregate – M20,

M15, M10, M5 Ratio
PKS ENGR.  105 COMMENTS

Proper calculation and relative proportioning of materials are very important to produce
cost-effective good quality of concrete. This article will explain you the simple
techniques used by engineers to calculate cement, sand, coarse aggregate(gravel or
Jalli) and water needed to prepare different concrete grades like M5, M7.5, M10, M15
and M20.

If you don’t want learn the calculations you can use the quantities given in the table at
the end of each topic to produce different grades of concrete.
The calculations and results given in this article are cross verified with different
standards and trusted sources like IS456, IS10262 and government’s Rate of Analysis.

Understanding Concrete Grades

Based on strength, concrete is classified into different grades like M5, M7.5, M10, M15,
M20 etc. In concrete grades, the letter “M” stands for “Mix” and the following number
stands for characteristic compressive strength of concrete in 28 days in the Direct
Compression test.

For example, if the concrete is M20 grade, it means the concrete will attain the
characteristic compressive strength of 20 Newton per millimeter square in 28 days after
curing.
Concrete Mix Ratio by Volume
Concrete mix ratios are prescribed ratio of cement, sand and aggregate to get the
desired strength in concrete. The volumetric mix ratio of M20 concrete is 1:1.5:3, hence
1 part of cement, 1.5 part of sand and 3 part of aggregate in volume is needed to
prepare M20 grade concrete.

Mix Ratio
Concrete Grade Compressive Strength
(Cement : Sand : Aggregate)

M5 1:5:10 5 N/mm2

M7.5 1:4:8 7.5 N/mm2

M10 1:3:6 10 N/mm2

M15 1:2:4 15 N/mm2

M20 1:1.5:3 20 N/mm2

However, above concrete mix ratios may not be accurately followed in the construction
site. This may be due to a few reasons such as to increase workability (by increasing
fine aggregate – River sand and M sand) or to reduce cost (by reducing cement
content) etc.,

Excess reducing of cement content or increase of sand content will adversely affect the
strength of concrete. Hence it is advisable not to increase the fine aggregate (river sand
and M sand) content more than 30% above the prescribed ratio in any case.

Before diving into calculation it is very important to understand the Difference

between Nominal Mix Concrete and Design Mix Concrete and their pros and cons.

 Method 1: Calculating cement sand and coarse aggregate in volume and weight
from Nominal Concrete Mix Ratio
 Method 2: Calculating the weight of sand and aggregate needed per bag of cement
(50kg bag) using Total weight of aggregate value given in IS codebook

Method:1 Calculation of Cement, Sand and Aggregate

from Nominal mix ratio
While mixing of ingredients, cement and sand(fine aggregate) have to fill the gaps
between the coarse aggregate before taking their own space. Hence in order to prepare
1 cubic meter of M20, M15 and M10 concrete you need 1.57 cubic meters of “total dry
volume:” of cement, sand and aggregate and incase of M7.5 and M5 concrete you
need 1.52 cubic meters total dry volume of cement sand and aggregate.

Many websites are giving different value for “total dry volume”, but the values given
above have been personally verified, many times, and they are in par with different
government’s Rates of Analysis.

Cement, Sand and Coarse aggregate requirement for M20

Grade concrete
Prescribed Concrete Mix Ratio of M20 grade concrete is 1:1.5:3 as per codebook.

1. Cement = 1 Part
2. Sand = 1.5 Part
3. Aggregate = 3 Part
4. Total dry volume of Material Required = 1.57 cu.m
Volume of cement needed = Ratio of cement x 1.57/(1+1.5+3)

= 1 x 1.57/5 .5

= 0.285 cu.m

Volume of sand needed = Ratio of Sand x 1.57/(1+1.5+3)

= 1.5 x 1.57/5 .5

= 0.427 cu.m

Volume of aggregate needed = Ratio of agg x 1.57/( 1+1.5+3)

= 0.427 x 32

= 0.854 cu.m
Weight of Cement required for 1 cubic meter of M20
Grade concrete
Weight of cement required can be calculated from multiplying the volume of cement with
the bulk density of cement. The bulk density of frequently used cement varieties (both
PPC and OPC) is 1440 kg/cu.m.

Weight of cement needed = volume of cement x bulk density of cement

= 0.285 cu.m x 1440 kg/cu.m

Weight of cement needed = 410 kg

No of cement bags required = 410/50

= 8.2 bags

Hence 8 bags of cement required to prepare one cubic meter of M20 grade concrete.

Alternative method:- 1 cu.m of cement is approximately 28.8 bags.

Weight of cement needed = volume of cement x 28.8

= 8.2 bags

Volume of Sand and Aggregate required for 1 cubic meter

of M20 grade concrete
Suppliers sell sand and coarse aggregate in the measurement of Cubic Feet (CFT),
UNITS and in lorry or tipper LOADS. One UNIT measurement is equal to 100 cubic feet.
One cubic meter is 35.32 Cubic feet.

Volume of sand needed = Volume of sand x 35.32

=0.427 x 35.32
= 15.08 cft

Volume of aggregate needed = Volume of agg x 35.32

= 30.16 cft

Hence 15.08 cft of sand and 30.16 cft of aggregate is requied to prepare one cubic
meter of M20 grade concrete.

Method:2 Calculation of Weight of Sand and Coarse

aggregate needed per bag of cement
IS456 Codebook recommends the following quantities of total aggregate per 50kg bag
of cement to produce nominal mix concrete.

TOTAL AGGREGATE
CONCRETE GRADE
( FINE + COARSE )

M5 800 kg

M 7.5 625 kg
M 10 480 kg

M 15 330 kg

M 20 250 kg

Weight of Sand and Aggregate required per 50kg cement

bag for M20 Grade Concrete
Let’s find out the quantity needed to prepare M20 grade by the codal procedure. Sand is
confirmed to Zone II – average grading. The ratio of fine to coarse aggregate is chosen
as usual as 1:2. From the above table we know we need 250kg of total dry aggregate
for our concrete.

The general ratio of fine aggregate to coarse aggregate is 1:2, but it can be adjusted
between 1:1.5 to 1:2.5 based on the grading of fine aggregate and size of coarse
aggregate.

1. Sand = 1 Part
2. Aggregate = 2 Part
3. Total aggregate required = 250 kg
Sand needed per bag of cement = Ratio of sand x 250 /(1+2)

= 1 x 250 /(1+2)

= 83 kg ~ 85 kg

Aggregate needed per bag of cement = Ratio of agg x 250 /(1+2)

= 170 kg
