The document outlines the procedure for adjusting the valves and unit injectors of an engine, including necessary special tools and safety precautions.

The steps include removing the plug on the flywheel casing, loosening the brake rocker arm springs, turning the engine to the appropriate camshaft marking, checking and adjusting the valve clearances, adjusting the unit injectors, checking and adjusting the exhaust valves and engine brake rocker arms.

Special tools 88800014 (cranking tool) and 88800232 (feeler gauge) are required.

Turn the engine in its normal direction of rotation to the next camshaft marking (e.g. 5/E6) for
adjustment of valves, unit injector and engine brake rocker arm.

Note: Markings 1-6 apply to the adjustment of the inlet valves and unit injectors. Markings E1-E6 apply to the
adjustment of the exhaust valves and engine brake rocker arms.

Check that the valve clearance (on cylinder 5 in position 5/E6 in the above example) between the
caliper and the rocker arm thrust sleeve is according to Specifications.
If necessary, adjust the valve clearance as follows:

Adjust to give the correct valve clearance on the inlet valves (on cylinder 5 and position 5/E6 in the
above example). Use a tool to hold adjusting screw B still and tighten locking nut A with an open
spanner. Refer to Specifications.

Re-measure the valve clearance.

Note: Mark with a marker pen when an adjustment has been completed, to keep track of the valves and unit injectors/
brake rocker arms which have been adjusted.

Unit injector, adjustment

Loosen and adjust the screw on the unit injector rocker arm to zero clearance (on cylinder 5 and
position 5/E6 in the above example). Then tighten the adjusting screw according to Specifications.

Use a tool to hold adjusting screw B still and tighten locking nut A with an open spanner. Refer to
Specifications.

Caution
Secure the valve caliper when tightening or loosening the lock screw, to avoid bending the
valve stem.

If the valve clearance needs adjusting, remove the lock screw and the shim. Calculate the thickness
of the new shim on the basis of the measured value. Fit the shim and tighten the lock screw to
torque according to Specifications.

Check the valve clearance and leave the feeling gauge in place.

The feeler gauge that is in place should eliminate the exhaust valve clearance.
Check the brake rocker arm clearance between the rocker arm roller and the camshaft using
88800232. Check that the clearance is correct, see Specifications.

Note: Checking only the brake rocker arm clearance may only be done on a well run-in engine where the valve system
has not been disturbed.

Note: If the checked value differs from the value in Specifications, adjust as described below, otherwise go to point 11 .

Note: Leave the feeler gauge in place.

Loosen the brake rocker arm lock nut A and turn the adjuster screw B 0.5 - 1 turn clockwise.

Place 88800232 between the camshaft and the brake rocker arm roller. 88800232 thickness
according to Specifications.

Tighten adjuster screw B until it makes contact and then a further half turn so that the valve caliper
is pressed down and the exhaust valve opens slightly. The engine brake mechanism is now loaded
and all parts assume their correct positions.

Loosen adjuster screw B until 88800232 can be pushed in and out with some effort.

Lock the adjuster screw B in this position with lock nut A with torque, see Specifications
