The document reports on the results of flow testing fire pumps at a power facility according to NFPA standards.

Both a diesel-driven fire pump and an electric-driven fire pump were tested.

The diesel fire pump was found to be in good working condition and achieved higher flow rates than previous tests, though at slightly lower pressures in some cases.

Actual flow measurement of fire pumps through hydrants

as required by NFPA 25 Chapter 6 Standpipe and Hose
System and Chapter 4 Fire Pump System.

October 28, 2019

Abstract

This flow testing procedure is an initial test procedure of how the authority having jurisdiction
interprets clause covered by NFPA 25 standard (Chapter 4 and Chapter 6). It is intended to see the
actual flow discharge of both the diesel driven and electric driven fire pump. In addition, changes on this
procedure may be done as per recommendation of persons having authority over the equipment.
Before this test is done, coordination with the operator, maintenance and safety department is highly
required.

Fire Pump Flow Testing Procedure

1. Initialize necessary permits (LOTO and impairment)

2. Barricade the discharge area of the Octopus Head and ensure that no person/vehicle shall cross
the area.
3. Isolate discharge valve of Diesel Fire Pump and Electric Driven Fire Pump from the fire pump
system.
4. Open Isolation Valve of Diesel Fire Pump going to the Octopus Head
5. Ensure that all system pertaining in the diesel engine fire pump is in proper working condition
6. Install the playpipe on each of the hydrant head. Mark each hydrant.
7. Fully open the hydrant in which the 1 st playpipe is installed.
8. Turn the Diesel Fire Pump ON.
9. Record the discharge pressure of the pump.
10. Using the pitot tube, record the velocity pressure of the 1 st playpipe.
11. Repeat steps 7, 9 and 10 with the other playpipes until the discharge pressure drops to 25% (as
per playpipe manual) of the initial discharge pressure of the pump.
12. Turn Off Diesel Fire Pump
13. Close All Hydrants.
14. Repeat steps 7-13 but this time using the electric driven fire pump.
15. Refer to flow conversion table on the playpipe manual to calculate the actual flow of each
playpipes.
16. Graph the discharge pressure and flow of each pump and compare graph with the pump data

2019 Diesel Engine Driven Fire Pump flow test yielded the following:
a. Higher flow rates were observed during the test at a higher discharge pressure compared to the
acceptance test data and slightly lower discharge pressures compared to 2018 Test with 1 to 3 fully
opened playpipes.
b. At 4 to 6 fully opened playpipes, 2019 Test still have higher discharge flow rate compared to
acceptance test and 2018 Test with slight difference in discharge pressures.
c. Engine speed averaged at 2,102 RPM with the highest discharge flow rate at 527.0 m³/h at 7.7
kg/cm².
d. No abnormal conditions were observed during the test.
e. Overall, the pump is still in good working condition.

2019 Electric Motor Driven Fire Pump flow test yielded the following:
a. Higher volume flow rates and discharge pressures were observed all throughout the test compared
to the last year data, however, flow rates at 5 to 6 fully opened playpipes were lower than the
acceptance test.
b. Engine speed averaged at 3,750 RPM and maximum flow rate during the test is 565.3 m³/h at 9.5
kg/cm².
c. No abnormal conditions were observed during the test.
d. Overall, the pump is still in good working condition.
