Effect of Garlic Plant Extract (Allium sativum) and Argao

(Premna odorata) Leaves Extract as Pesticide against Termites

(Cryptotermis)

Introduction

Background of the study

Termites normally thrive in tropical soil, such as the kind found

in the Philippines. In fact, of the 54 species of termites, six

of them are commonly found in homes and other structures in the

country.

Termites damage can, in severe cases and when left untreated over

a long period of time, cause your property to become structurally

unstable. Termite infestation is one of the most devastating

problems faced by many property owners.

Philippines is blessed with different kinds of plants that can be

use to make a pesticide to kill pest. Garlic Plant(Allium

sativum) has natural fungicidal and pesticidal properties that

work effectively to control pests. Argao (Premna odorata) Leaves,

a medical plant, also shows a good potential as a pesticide since

its aromatic smell, when crushed, keeps pest away.

With this, the investigator initiated to test the Effectiveness

of Garlic plant extract (Allium sativum)and Argao (Premna

odorata)leaves extract as pesticide against termites

(Cryptotermis).

General objective:
Generally this study aims to find out if Garlic Plant

Extract and Argao Leaves Extract has an effect in making

Significance of study:

The result of this study will be able to help all people and for

those who are looking for cheaper ways to eliminate termites in

their household.

Also, using this study, people will be comfortable in using it

since there is no harmful chemical being added to this

experiment. This study is also an environmental friendly.

Scope and limitation:

This study is limited on the use of Garlic plant extract and

Argao leaves extract as pesticide in killing Termites.

Definition of terms:

Effect - a change that results when something is done or

happens.

Garlic (Allium sativum) - a plant that is related to the onion

and that has small sections (called cloves) which have a strong

taste and smell and are used for flavoring foods.

- a variable that is use in conducting the study.

Plant - to put (a seed, flower, or plant) in the ground to grow

- a variable that is use in conducting the study.

Extract – a liquid substance which you can get by crushing

something or in other process.

- a substance which you apply in your problem in

conducting the study.

Argao - a usually tall plant that has a thick, wooden stem and

many large branches.

- a variable that is use in conducting the study.

Pesticide - a substance or mixture of substances used to kill a

pest.

Termites - a kind of soft, white insect that lives in groups,

eats wood, and causes a lot of damage to wooden structures.

- It is the problem in the study.

Review of Related Literature

Garlic is widely used around the world for its pungent flavor as

a seasoning or condiment. It is a fundamental component in many

or most dishes of various regions. Garlic is easy to grow and can

be grown year-round in mild climates. In cold climates, cloves

can be planted in the ground about six weeks before the soil

freezes and harvested in late spring. Garlic plants are not

attacked by pests. They can suffer from pink root, a disease that

stunts the roots and turns them pink or red. Garlic plants can be

grown close together, leaving enough room for the bulbs to

mature, and are easily grown in containers of sufficient depth.

Garlic is claimed to help prevent heart disease (including

atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure) and

cancer. Animal studies, and some early investigational studies in

humans, have suggested possible cardiovascular benefits of

garlic. A Czech study found that garlic supplementation reduced

accumulation of cholesterol on the vascular walls of animals.

Alliums sativum yields allicin, a powerful antibiotic and

antifungal compound (phytoncide). In some cases, it can be used

as a home remedy to help speed recovery from strep throat or

other minor ailments because of its antibiotic properties. It

also contains the sulfur containing compounds alliin, ajoene,

diallylsulfide, dithiin, S-allylcysteine, and enzymes, vitamin B,

proteins, minerals, saponins, flavonoids, and maillard reaction

products, which are non-sulfur containing compounds.

The Argao plant, which has the scientific name of Premna odorata,

of the Verbenaceae family, is considered to be one of the most

popular Philippine alternative medicines. It is a small tree

reaching a height of 8 meters. The leaves which are somewhat

heart-shaped at the base and pointed at the tip are 10-20

centimeters long. The leaves when crushed are aromatic. These are

sometimes used as condiment and generally considered a good cure

for cough. This tree also grows in different parts of the

archipelago, thereby earning for itself several names.

The Argao tree was considered a highly medicinal herb whose

“heart” was boiled to alleviate stomach pains and its leaves used

as an application for “ugahip”. It was also believed to prevent

relapses, head colds, illnesses due to “bad air”, and to

alleviate fever by taking a bath with it.

Methodology

Materials:

 100 grams of Garlic and 100 grams of Argoa leaves

 Water

 Measuring cylinder/ measuring cup

 mortar pestle

Procedure:

 Crush the garlic and the Argao leaves in the mortar

pestle until the extract is produce and mix.

 Using the measuring cylinder/measuring cup, measure

the extract according to your treatments. Add water if

needed in according to your different treatments.

 Apply to termites.
