Task 4 Make believe that now you are on the Net with your sister who is on holiday abroad.
Your mother is asking questions and you are reporting them. Note that in reported speech they
are not questions any more. E.g.: “Are you all right?” - She asks if you are all right. “When
will you come back?” – Mum asks when you will come back.

Watch out! ‘When’ used as a question word and ‘if’ or ‘when’ used to report
questions can be followed by the future simple: When will I know the result? She
asks/ I wonder/I don’t know (What?) if I will get enough points for the test.
Don’t use the future simple in adverbial clauses of time and condition after
if, while, before, after, until, as soon as, by the time or in case. Use present simple
or present perfect instead. E.g.: I’ll wait until you finish/ have finished. (Not:
until you will finish) I’ll stay here in case you need my help. (Not:In case you will
need)
We’ll take a taxi if you finish late. (Not: if you will finish late.)
Compare: I don’t know (What?) when it will be ready. (object clause)
I will let you know (When?) when it is ready. (adverbial clause of time)

Demonstrative pronouns have singular and plural forms:
this book – these books; that tree – those trees
Nouns are made plural by adding - (e)s:
bath – baths; watch – watches; boy – boys, baby – babies; tomato – tomatoes
(but: photos, pianos); wife – wives (knives, leaves, loaves, selves, lives, halves,
thieves, wolves, calves; but: safes, roofs, chiefs etc.)
Irregular plurals: man – men, woman – women, tooth – teeth, goose – geese,
mouse – mice, child – children, ox – oxen, person - people
The same form for the singular and the plural: sheep, deer, fish, salmon, trout,
aircraft, means, species, series
Always singular: air, bread, toast, water; history, maths, football, darts, flu,
mumps; evidence, advice, news, information; trouble, fun, work, effort, love;
10$, two hours; money, jewellery, furniture, luggage, rubbish, hair, cutlery, etc
(but: experience = досвід, an experience = випадок; a custom = звичай,

Quantifiers
(займенники, що вказують на кількість)
 Use ‘some’ in affirmative sentences, ‘any’ in questions and negations and ‘no’ in
negative sentences. Use ‘some’ in offers and requests (пропозиція & прохання)
E.g.: We have some fish but there isn’t any meat and there’s no bread left.
 ‘A lot of’ is used in affirmative sentences, ‘much’ and ‘many’ are usually used in
negative sentences and questions. E.g.: I have a lot of books, I don’t have many
paintings though. Do you have much free time now?
 Use ‘many’ and ‘few’ with countable nouns; ‘much’ and ‘little’ – with
uncountable nouns. E.g.: He doesn’t have many friends, he has only a few. He
doesn’t have much money; he has only a little.
 ‘A few’ and ‘a little’ are often used in a ‘positive’ way, while ‘few’ and ‘little’ –
in a ‘negative’ way. E.g.: I have a little (трохи) money, so we can go to a café.
I have little (мало) money, so we can’t go to a café.
 The comparative forms are ‘more’, ‘less’ and ‘fewer’. E.g.: He used to have
fewer friends and less money.

The Indefinite Article (a/ an)
developed from the old English numeral ‘one’ and can be used only with nouns
in the singular. e.g.: I need a book.
- is used to name and classify an object (= it’s one of the class of similar objects).
e.g.: This is a cat. She is a doctor.
- is used to represent the whole class. e.g.: A tiger is a wild animal.
- means ‘one’. e.g.: Wait a minute. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
- is used to mark the new information in the sentence. e.g.: I opened the box and
found an envelope there.
- is used before a noun with a descriptive attribute. e.g.: It’s a nice dog.
No Article
- is used for the same ideas in the plural & with uncountable nouns.
e.g.: They are _ students. _ Children like _sweets. It’s _ good news.
- ‘some’/’any’ is used for some quantity. e.g.: I’ve got some good news for you.
- with bed, church, school, university, hospital, prison when we refer to the
purpose for which they exist and town as the opposite of countryside: e.g.: He
goes to school. But: He taught geography at the local secondary school.
The Definite Article (the)
- means ‘this one/ ones’. e.g.: Give me the book, please. Look at the children.
- is used to name unique objects. e.g.: the moon, the world, the Great Pyramid
- is used to represent the whole class. e.g.: The lion is an ambush killer.
- is used to mark the information which is not new for the listener.
e.g.: I opened the box and found an envelope there. The film was great.
- is used before a noun with a limiting attribute. e.g: That’s the dog I need.
- is used before names of oceans (the Pacific Ocean), seas (the Black Sea), rivers
(the River Thames), but not lakes (_ Lake Michigan); groups of islands (the
Bahamas) and chains of mountains (the Alps), but not of a separate island
(_Capri) or a mount (_Everest); deserts (the Sahara) and canals (the Suez
Canal), but not countries (_France) or continents (_South America).
