Title: Jesus Appoints Peter: Servant of the Servants

Christian Message
Doctrine: The call of the Peter is a part of God’s call to lead Jesus’ bride, the Church and destined
to be another Christ.
Moral: As we share the priesthood of Christ by the virtue of Baptism, we too, should sanctify even
our smallest thoughts, words and actions that will also serve our help to the leaders of the Church.
Worship: The Pope is the Vicar of Christ and like Him we should pray for Him to maintain His figure
as the “Alter Christus”

Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize that Jesus chose Peter to lead the Church and be the Vicar of Christ
2. Help the leaders of the Church to accomplish their mission to lead the people
3. Pray for our Pope, his intentions and his ministry.

Content
Coming from the Gospel according to St. Matthew 16:13-20, Jesus founded the Church and
entrusted Her to Peter by appointing as the visible leader and head of the Church. The role of Peter
is a great responsibility for Him. Christ will not be visible until the end of time as what the Father
willed to him, so in order to continue what Jesus Christ has founded. He chose Peter to lead His
flock and continue the saving mission of Jesus Christ. Until the present times, the role and the
same Church has been handed down from generations to generations. In the present times, we
have our Pope, Pope Francis as the 266th successor of Peter. What has been entrusted to Peter is
still the same Church entrusted to our present Pope through the apostolic succession.

B. Lesson Proper

B.1 From Peter to Pope Francis

• The scripture, mainly coming from the Gospel according to Matthew, states the appointing of
Jesus to Peter as the head of the Church.
• Though Jesus knew that Peter is impulsive and emotional, he could better accomplish and do
the task given to him.
• His name Simon was changed to Peter which means “rock”, a solid foundation.
• Peter maintained the strong foundation of the Church through the years after Jesus had finally
ascended to heaven. His life was nailed to the Church until he was martyred for the sake of
the Gospel.
• Through the apostolic succession, the vicar of Christ, or the visible “another Christ” is
sustained and the Church continues to live on through the ministry of the Popes, as the
successors of Peter.

B.2 Servant of Servants

• This phrase was popularized by St. Gregory the Great and is exclusively for the Popes.
• It is intended for the Popes that they should be a living proof of service in their ministry.
• We are all servants of God and the Pope is the head of all the servants.
• As a Pope, is the great teacher for the Church. He is infallible or without error. This does not
mean that a Pope does not commit sin neither does not have any sin.
• The infallibility of the Pope is reserved only in teaching with matters of faith and morals. It
means that he could not err when he speaks or teaches something about God, the Church
and of our morals.

• In relation to his infallibility, the Pope writes exhortations and encyclicals which he thinks might
be of great help to clarify things about faith and morals especially when our Catholic Faith is
in crisis that dangers our belief to God and to the Church.

B.3 Pope St. Gregory the Great

B.4 St. Margaret Mary Alacoque
• St. Mary Margaret Alacoque is known for chant called as “The Gregorian Chant.” In the Latin
Mass, we do hear these songs and was popularized by St. Gregory the Great. It became
popular, too, across the Catholic countries.
