Clause/Phrase Race: TEACHER INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Students will need to know that clauses have both a subject and a verb
and are a complete thought.

2) Put students in groups of 2, 3, or 4. Have them choose a “scribe” to write

the group’s answers. Give each group a race sheet, face down.

3) Explain that they will have10 clauses or phrases to identify with a C or P.

When they are finished they should all raise their hands for you to check
the answers. The first group to get all ten correct wins! When you say “GO”
they can turn the papers over and begin.

4) As you check a finished group’s answers, make sure the other groups
keep working. If they did not win, do not tell them which one or how many
are wrong. (As you’re checking, you’ll have to keep an eye out for the next
group of hands to shoot up so that it’s fair.) **If your students can handle it,
you could have a designated “checker” from each group come form a line
in front of you to get the answers checked instead.

5) Extensions:
-Make groups continue to work until all have accomplished the task
correctly.
-Have students label the subjects and verbs that they can find.
-Have students correct the phrases so that they are complete thoughts.
-Have students make their own races to play with each other.
