2 General
The ETU supports wireless LAN-to-LAN interconnects via a MINI-LINK E hop
or network. The interface towards LANs is Ethernet 10BASE-T/ 100BASE-TX.

The transmission capacity is selectable by choosing different transmission

interface, E1, E2 or E3, to the ETU.

Up to four E2 or sixteen E1 channels for PBX can be connected, in parallel to

the ETU, to the MMU or the SMU.

The ETU supports Ethernet full-duplex and auto-negotiation functions.

Ethernet flow control function is implemented on the Ethernet Rx side of the

ETU.

3 Design and Performance

3.1 Functional Description

3.1.1 Main Characteristics

• Wireless full duplex LAN-to-LAN connection via a MINI-LINK E hop, or

network or a PDH network with unstructured traffic channels.

• 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX LAN interface with auto-negotiation.

• Selectable E1/E2/E3 G.703 interface connection on trunk side giving

possibility to adapt to LAN-to-LAN traffic needs.

• Flow control on the receive side of the ETU in order to avoid

congestion. The ETU will respond on Pause-packets from connected
equipment by queuing the packets and not sending any packets
during the time set in the Pause-packet. This function is configurable.

• Optional n·E1/E2 PDH channels, parallel to ETU, for connection of

e.g. PBX.

• Hardware alarm from the ETU is visible in Netman or MSM via a cable
from ETU fault interface connector to NCC connector at the MMU.
This cable is included in the poduct package.

• Inband remote management and supervision via Telnet and a network

connection.

• Remote software upgrade via FTP and a network connection.

• LINK DOWN on LAN side visible as an MMU input alarm in Netman or

MSM

• Loss of Ethernet traffic longer than a settable time limit, 1min to 1day,
will generate AIS in the PDH traffic.

• Power supply nominal 24 – 60 V DC.

3.2.1 Ethernet Logic

This block includes the Ethernet interface circuit.

On the receiver side the incoming Ethernet packets from the LAN are
captured and the preamble is cut off.

On the transmitter side preambles are added to the stored Ethernet packets
from the G. 703 side and transmitted.

3.2.2 Traffic Converter and Buffer

The Ethernet packets from the Ethernet side are stored in a buffer until they
are transmitted. Before the packets are sent to the G.703 logic they are
encapsulated in HDLC frames.

The HDLC frames from the G.703 side are captured, the overhead is cut off,
and the remaining Ethernet packet is stored into a buffer until it is sent to the
Ethernet logic.

3.2.3 G. 703 Logic

This block includes the PDH interface circuit.

The HDLC encapsulated frames from the traffic converter and buffer are
HDB3 encoded and transmitted.

The HDB3 encoded traffic from the G.703 side is decoded and sent to the
traffic converter and buffer.

3.2.4 Local Alarm Interface

Includes three LEDs on the Front panel:

• One green LED for power on.

• One yellow LED for link and traffic indication

• One red LED for alarm indication

3.2.5 Fault

Alarm interface to be connected to MMU auxiliary alarm input housed in the

NCC connector. This hardware alarm can be seen using Netman or MSM.

3.2.6 O&M

Interface for local unit set-up via e.g. a PC and a terminal emulator (e.g.
Hyper Terminal).
