During and after class the class session, 80% of the Grade 10 students are able to:

A. Review
Last meeting, we discussed about Contemporary Philippine Music. As a review, what is

Contemporary Philippine Music?
 Contemporary Philippine Music are original Pilipino music which were
composed during 20th century onwards.
 Contemporary Philippine Music are latest trends and musical styles in the
entertainment industry.

B. New Lesson
1. Motivation
You have mentioned some of the contemporary Filipino singers so before we proceed
to our new lesson, we will have a game. It’s called “charade”. This is the mechanics
of the game:
1.1 You will be divided into two groups
1.2 Each group will choose a representative and he will pick one paper from the
box.
1.3 The representative will act out the title of the song which he had picked.
1.4 An instrumental music of the song will be played for five (5) seconds every
after five (5) seconds
1.5 The member will guess the title of the song with in one (1) minute and the
first group who could guess the correct title of the song will be given one
point.
1.6 At the end of the game, the group with the most number of points will be
declared as the winner.

 Tuwing umuulan at kapiling ka

2. Presentation
As I’ve mentiond earlier, every song has an intelligent composer behind. And the songs
we used in our game are composed by Ryan Cayabyab.
3. Discussion
RYAN CAYABYAB
Born Raymundo Cayabyab in 1954 in Santa Cruz,

Manila, he suffered the death of his mother, Celerina
Venson Pujante (she died of cancer at the age of 43),
when he was 6 years old. His father, Alberto Austria
Cayabyab, who was an ordinary government employee,
struggled to support him and his three siblings. An opera
singer and a college professor at the UP School of Music (to whom he considered her as his first
piano teacher), his mother's dying wish was that none of the children pursue a music career, as
she knew how hard life it was, with often low earnings.
Cayabyab initially took up Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in the University of
the Philippines, Diliman. Looking for work to support his studies, he landed with then-Senator
Salvador Laurel as accompanist for the Chorale Ensemble of the Development Bank of the
Philippines (DBP). Noticing Cayabyab's exceptional talent on playing the piano, Laurel offered
Cayabyab a scholarship to enable him to pursue an education in music.
Cayabyab graduated from the UP College of Music earning a Bachelor of Music, Major in
Theory degree. Eventually, he became a full-time professor for the Department of Composition
and Music Theory in the UP Diliman for almost two decades.
Here are some other important information about the musician Ryan Cayabyab, who is also
known as Mr. C:
 Excels as a composer of electric, modern and popular music
 Was awarded in 1978 as one of TOYM (Ten Outstanding Young Men) of the Philippines
 Emerged as the only Asian winner of the Onassis International Cultural Competition in
Greece with his MISA 2000
 Won countless awards from film, television, and recording industries.

One of the most famous compositions of Ryan Cayabyab especially to teenagers is the
song “Kailan” please listen to the song and analyze the lyrics carefully.

 To become aware of the music of the contemporary Philippine music

on the song “Kailan”. You have five (5) minutes to prepare.
