Introduction

What does Leewardists mean?

The name Leewardists would have merely

been a quirky moniker, if it were not related
to geography. On a hill, the windward side
is blessed with rains, sunlight, and wind
throughout the year. On the other hand,
the leeward side is the gloomier side with
no rains, no wind and hardly any sunlight.

Similarly, a society or a fraternity also has

two facades, a windward and a leeward.
The windward being the posh, flawless, faux transparent side. And the other, the
leeward side, the façade that has always been bare transparent but never been
tended to or actually looked at. We have been working tirelessly on the leeward side
and also for its upliftment.
Who are we?

We are a group of artists, architects and urban designers working towards depicting
the realities of design, architecture, sustainability and urban design through simple
illustrations and comics. There is no particular definition to the kind of work we do.
We might belong to the architecture fraternity by definition, but we are essentially
the proprietors of the unexplored genre of comic making.

We have designed a business model of our own that does not replicate the standard
architectural practice or work culture. As observers of the serious issues in student
lives and professional practise, we realise that the message needs to be conveyed in
a light hearted manner to create an impact. We choose to portray it through comics,
graphical narratives and videos on our social media handles.

Our intent is not just to depict these issues

but to address them at the grass root level
as well and that begins with the education
itself. We decided to break the monotony
of the existing education models, with our
own devised methods.

The methodology remains the same. We

recognize the issues, understand the root
cause of it and simplify it, so that it can be
conceived even by a layman, and devise a
workshop/seminar that is based on the
similar lines. During the course of imparting
education, we have also designed new
models like webinars and online sessions
through which we are aiming to reach out
to the audience other than that of India.
Our works

As featured on our social media pages and website, we have been and aiming to
make comics and visuals that draws the eye to important and vital issues faced by
the design fraternity today. Original, organic and straight from the real world, we
make comics that are serious in terms of intent yet tweaked to our style (in form of
comics, videos, and blogs) to reach out to the global masses.

Our profile does not aim to just feed content to our viewers, but engage with them
and constantly reach out to them. We aim to impart knowledge through our comics
so that it benefits whoever comes across our pages.

Character (The Architect) – The character

that is the main protagonist of all our
comics is the result of 3 years of hard work,
with whom all architecture students and
professionals identify. Its relatability and
features are what makes it unique and
identifiable.
Our graphical style - We choose a very
simple language for our graphics, so
that it converses in a very simple form to
the audience. They are usually rendered
digitally.
The process - It starts with storyboarding
and panelling for each comic, which are
hand sketched and then worked on for
finesse digitally, which is the final upload
on social media handles. Our process is
kept transparent as it also a new medium
for students to explore!
Our works

We also explore the idea of graphical representation through converting our comics
into different mediums. Basic storyboarded panel comics is one of them, apart from
which we make videos, narratives and gifs to explore the representation styles. Our
collaborations with Volume Zero and Sqrfactor, both Indian design based portals for
their competitions, have been content based, and have proved to be engaging with
students. Please click on the links below to view some of our works:

Workshops

We have conducted a number of workshops and seminars in over 40 colleges

across India in the time span of 1 year. A majority of our live workshops focus on
‘Architecture and Comics,’ as it is our subject of expertise. Apart from that we
have also conducted ‘Freshman Orientation Workshops,’ which is a fun, hands-on
introduction to architecture school.

Our workshops also deal with issues faced

among the students. Our ability to look at
the humorous side of things even when
in a difficult situation is what makes our
workshops stand out from the crowd.
Some of our notable workshops were at:

1. Annual NASA Convention (2017)

2. SPA, New Delhi
3. AAAD, Bengaluru
4. Zonal NASA (Zone 1, Gwalior)
5. BVP COA, Navi Mumbai
6. IPSA, Rajkot
7. Annual NASA Convention (2018)
8. Sigma COA, Trivandrum
9. R.V. College, Bengaluru
10. Auroville
Leewardists’ School

While depicting the realities of the education system in colleges, we realised there
was a widening gap between the architectural education and practice. Our focus
expanded to addressing these issues at the grassroots level and supplementing the
existing architecture teaching model with innovative models of our own.

The Leewardists’ School model essentially is a series of webinars on topics ranging

from ‘Briefs and Concepts’ to ‘Designing a Portfolio.’ Held over the course of the
semester, they are designed to simplify complex concepts and provide insights on
the overall design process. Our courses are attended by students as well as young
professionals. Since the inception of the School in October 2018, we have conducted
14 courses outlining 9 different subjects in architecture.

How do we select our subjects?

We have noticed that colleges tend to give greater weightage to tangible learnings
and it is generally assumed that the students will absorb the intangible by themselves.
For instance, a student might be asked to generate 100 different explorations for
basic design in order to explore his creativity. But no student is ever told that creativity
is hard work and requires immense effort, and that there is a certain discipline that
has to be practiced in order to achieve it. And this is where we step in.

We take up seemingly basic subjects, but the reality is these are subjects that students
are not explicitly taught. We provide a system, lay down a roadmap and break down
challenging topics by using simple analogies. Most importantly, we instill confidence
in the students that they can tackle any subject as long as they have a system for it
in place.

Why collaborate with us?

We recognise that architecture is a vast field with countless subjects and specialisations.
While we can conduct courses in our areas of expertise, there are several other fields
that we haven’t yet explored. We also do not want to leave it unexplored as we
realise that students are grasping difficult concepts with ease through our innovative
teaching methods.

In our forthcoming phase of the School, we are adding a series of professional

courses. We’re looking for collaborators who are experienced in specialised subjects,
are passionate about teaching students and share our vision for the School!

Logistics
Every course consists of
• 3 - 4 sessions
• 2 time slots – 11AM and 7PM (IST)
• 40 - 45 students in total
• 2 – 2.5 hours per session

The courses are held over the course of a semester in two cycles; July to December
and January to April. We also have a series of courses designed for the summer break.
The marketing and registrations for the courses is handled through our social media
pages. We have also acquired an Online Learning Management System through
which assignments are submitted. Participants are provided with feedback after the
evaluation of their assignments. All participants are also given certificates at the end
of the course.
Collaboration Model

As we are just venturing into collaborations for online courses, we have merely a
single model for collaborators. In this model, the scope of work for a collaborator
includes the following:
• Provide content for the course
• Be part of the online sessions and clarify doubts in the Q&A session

The scope of work for Leewardists includes:

• Marketing and registrations for the course
• Develop a structure for the content and create the course outline
• Translate the content and structure into a presentation that is true to the
established Leewardists’ format
• Create graphics and drawings for the entire course
• The online sessions will be conducted by the Leewardists’ founder, Anuj Kale

Benefits of Collaborating with Leewardists

1. The collaborator will receive significant visibility on the Leewardists’ social
media pages and website during the course of promotions.
2. An insight into our unconventional teaching methods. We are also hoping
to create more such methods through the collaborations.
3. The collaborator will also be a part of the course as a verified tutor through
the Online Learning Management System.
4. We will be looking at future courses in collaboration upon the successful
completion of the first course. The compensation for future courses can be
decided based on a mutual understanding between the two parties.
