The document outlines the procedure for lowering pipes into trenches during a pipeline construction project.

The purpose is to lay guidelines and requirements for controlling the lowering activity and inspections during a pipeline construction project by MPEC for BGL in Hyderabad.

The main steps are: obtaining approval, checking the trench, repairing any coating damages, lowering the pipe gently using equipment like hydra, ensuring minimum bend radius is maintained, and capping the ends until tie-in welding.

2 OF 5 Procedure for Lowering

Procedure For
LOWERING

The purpose of this method statement is to lay guidelines and requirements and
to establish a method or a system to control the Lowering activity and inspection
to be used in the BGL CNG & CGD pipeline project at Hyderabad by MPEC for
executing the Project.

2.0 SCOPE

The scope covers the laying of pipe sections in the excavated trench for 12”,6” &
4” Dia. construction for BGL Pipeline Project.

3.0 REFERENCES

Following documents in totality or in part shall form the reference documents:-

1. Mec Spec.MEC/S/05/62/104
2. Route Alignment Sheets
3. Design & construction requirements for cross-country hydrocarbon

4.0 METHODOLOGY

Lowering shall start only after obtaining approval from MEC / BGL in part “A” of
Pipe Book. Entire trench bottom shall be checked to remove the presence of all
cuts, pipe supports, stones, roots, debris, stakes, rock projections up to 15 cm
below underside of pipe and any other rigid materials which could lead to
perforation/ tearing of the coating.

Lowering shall follow as soon as possible, after the completion of joint coating of
the pipeline. A complete check by a full circle holiday detector, duly calibrated,
for pipe coating and for field joint coating shall be carried out at 25KVA and
damages, if any, and shall be repaired. All points on the pipeline where the
coating has been in contact with either the skids or with the lifting equipment
during laying, shall be carefully inspected for damages, denting or other defects
and shall be completely repaired. If, after checking, it becomes necessary to
place the pipeline again on supports at the bottom of the trench, these must be
padded in such a way as to prevent damage to the coating, thus avoiding
necessity for further repairs when the pipe is finally raised and laid.

Care shall be exercised while removing the slings from around the coated pipe,
after it has been lowered into the trench. Any damage caused to the coatings
shall be promptly repaired. No sling shall be put around field joint coating.

Laying shall be carried out under safe conditions so as to avoid stresses and
temporary deformations of the equipments which may cause damage to the
pipeline itself and to the coating. In case localized points where the Right-of-
Way is restricted to the minimum necessary for the transit of mechanical
equipment, the laying shall be carried out using other suitable means.

3 OF 5 Procedure for Lowering

Procedure For
LOWERING

The pipe section shall be placed on the trench bed without jerking, falling, impact
or other similar stresses. In particular care must be taken that the deformations
caused during the raising of pipeline from the support does not exceed the values
for the minimum allowable radius of elastic curvature so as to keep stresses on
steel & coating within safe limits. The pipeline shall be lifted and laid using, for all
movements necessary, suitable equipment and non-abrasive material having
width for the fragility of the coating. Hydra shall be deployed for lowering
depending upon the section length the number of hydra shall be increased as
accordingly as directed by BGL/ MEC.

It shall be ensured that the pipe is laid gently by using sufficient no of pipe
layers for holding the line in gentle s-curve maintaining the minimum elastic
bend radius as per specification. Care shall be exercised while removing the
slings from around the coated pipe after it has been lowered into the trench. Any
damage caused to the coating shall be promptly repaired.

Wherever the pipeline is laid under tension, as a result of undue stresses at

specific points, the trench shall be rectified to the satisfaction of BGL/MEC, so
that it fits in the excavated trench bed.

Lowering foreman shall ensure the ends of the pipe strings will be closed using
“End caps” to prevent the ingress of sand, water etc., until the Tie-in Welds are
made.

Tie-in pit shall be excavated to facilitate tie-in joint welding is the trench before
lowering.

The pipeline must be laid without interruption for the whole or the length of
section available. Where water is present, no laying shall be permitted until the
ditch has been drained to the extent and for the time necessary to make visual
inspection possible of the bed on which the pipe is to be laid.

Following such inspections, the presence of water will be permitted, provided that
it is not so high as to cause cave-in of walls of the trench or floating of the
pipeline before backfilling, when weighting is not provided for the pipe. MPEC
shall take precautions immediately after lowering in to prevent the movement of
the pipe in the trench.

Post padding work shall start immediately after lowering. Subsequent padding
shall be done after lowering. After pipe lowering & padding, HDPE Duct laying
shall be completed with sand padding and warning mat. One layer of brick shall
be laid above the warning mat.

5.0 HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

The approved procedure of Health, Safety & Environment shall be followed

during the execution.

These hazards may occur during the activity. The control of Health, Safety &
Environment hazards shall be governed by documents viz. First Aid
Practices, Environment Control Procedure and Occupational Health & Safety
Practices.

Note: In case of any conflict between the requirements of this procedure and MNGL
specification the later shall govern.
