1. Mr.

X has a distinguished academic record and excels in sports and other

extra-curricular activities since childhood. He joined ABC as salesman. In
the company it was noticed he was conceited and his interaction with other
people was not exactly cordial. He was indifferent to suggestions from
superiors and subordinates. However, he was a star performer as salesmen
and always crossed targets, in the time he had spent with the company. The
company needs a new regional sales manager to improve the performance of
a loss-making region, should they appoint him?

No, they should not appoint Mr. X. He is a great salesperson but the position of regional might require a
different set of skills which unfortunately are lacking in him. First, he lacks interpersonal skills which are
critical in the leadership position as he will have different employees and clients to deal with and he
must have the knowledge to handle each unique case. Leadership goes beyond good results and hitting
targets. Second, he is described as a conceited person which makes it very hard to empathize with the
low performing employees whom he will be heading. A manager should always be ready to listen and
empower the employees and Mr. X might not excel in this with that kind of attitude. It is also important
to understand that he will be handling a team and such a task will need a composed person who takes
pride in the team and not just personal achievements.
