The Prince of Tides Paper 1

The text “The Prince of Tides” is an article highlighting the unforeseen and incredible

rise to fame of legendary Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. A staple within the Bollywood

community, Saif Ali Khan is now regarded as one of the most successful actors of Bollywood.

The article emphasizes how he is the one to suffice the ideal of a role model.

Based off the language and style of the article, it is clear that it was written in a famous

person’s magazine, intending to reach Saif Ali Khan’s fans that would know the aftermath of his

success story. As for certain readers that may not know Khan very well, the author includes a

dashing picture of him in order to familiarize his new audience with the film star in question.

Making use of a quote, the author gives everyone an insight into the thought-process and attitude

of Saif Ali Khan. The quote signifies his attitude towards life, which is to seize each opportunity

because you never know what can happen, another aspect of his “unplanned success story”.

The title of the article itself acts as a hook for the reader as the author of the article uses

capitalization to emphasize on an aspect of Khan’s career: his shaky journey which has led him

to where he is now. The mention of the word “tides” acts as a metaphor hinting at the various

challenges Saif Ali Khan would have faced throughout his career. Continuing onto the first

paragraph, this very aspect of the title is defined distinctly. Commenting on Khan’s

“recklessness” and the fact that this very trait became his nemesis is a contributing factor to the

‘tides’ he would have encountered throughout his life.

The second paragraph outlines the difference between his life when he was in his 20s and

later when he moved on to his 40s. This paragraph serves as an elaborate explanation of the

intended mood of the article. The various words and phrases used describe to the reader an

essence of the character that Saif Ali Khan is, making the audience feel more knowledgeable of

his life. The inclusion of a quote in the third paragraph, gives the readers more insight into the

kind of person that Saif Ali Khan is. It highlights his outlook towards acting mentioning that he

only just recently started enjoying his acting career.

“Half-confidence, ambivalence and mixed palette of roles” is an example of the rule of

three used in this article which highlights key character traits of Saif Ali Khan. The author uses

these words to show the genuine nature of Khan in the acting industry. The main purpose of this

paragraph is to make clear the next steps that Khan would have to take. A Synecdoche can be

identified in the same paragraph as “demons of smugness” actually refers to different things that

could tempt Khan whether it be money, drugs or fame, all of which would steer him off the

track. This article mentions his future ambitions, including his attempts to diversify into

production and trying new acting parts which also gives the readers something to look forward

to. The repeated use of the word “remain” adds dramatic effect to this article as it ends with

“remain saif”, what the author claims as the catch to success.

In conclusion, the focus of this article on Saif Ali Khan as the most unplanned success

story builds up to the moral at the end which states that perfection isn’t always necessary. This

then gives the reader a sense of hope and determination that they too would be able to do

anything that they set their hearts out to do. The structure of this article helps to convey the

message building up to the moral, something that the intended audience would be inclined to live

by as they are fans of Saif Ali Khan.
