Title of Plan The Million Dollar Project

Type of Plan Lesson Plan

Duration 90 minutes

Original
Lesson Plan

Summary of This lesson is designed to expose students to real world scenarios. Students have
Learning the opportunity to plan out expenses and learn the cost of items they will purchase
when they become adults such as a car and a home. Students will conduct
Experience research to gather information needed to create their presentation.

Type of Formal Classroom Environment

Learning
Environment

Subject Area(s) 6th Grade Mathematics

and Grade
Level

Learning ● Students will understand vocabulary associated with expenses (i.e.

Objective(s) or deposit, withdrawal)
● Students will create graphs to represent data
Essential ● Students will apply number sense with real world application
Question(s)

Alignment to MGSE6.SP.4 Display numerical data in plots on a number line, including dot plots,
histograms, and box plots.

Standards

Alignment to ● Empowered Learner CSS.EL.6-8.1 Use technology resources to increase

ISTE Standards self-direction and self-regulation in learning, including for problem solving
and collaboration (e.g., using the Internet to access online resources, edit
for Students or documents collaboratively)
Georgia’s Draft ● Use technology resources to increase self-direction and self-regulation in
K-8 Computer learning, including for problem solving and collaboration (e.g., using the
Science Internet to access online resources, edit documents collaboratively)
Standards

Materials ● Class set of 30 laptops

● Pencils
● Paper

Lesson 1. [T] Place laptops in work stations

Procedures 2. [T] Add activity instructions to google classroom
3. [S] Students will get into groups of 2 or 3
4. [T] Double check to make sure students can access activity instructions.
5. [T] Review instructions in whole group so students understand
expectations.
● Congratulations! You have just been given $1,000,000. There are
certain guidelines to your inheritance, which can be found below.
If you do not spend all of the money before the deadline below
you will lose it. (So start spending!)
Project Guidelines
● Put at least $75,000 aside for your college education.
● Purchase a home that is no more than $300,000
● Take 1 family vacation (all expenses must be included in
total cost: hotel, airfare, meals, transportation, spending
money, etc.)
● One car or vehicle
● One charitable donation
● All expenses us be represented in the form of a graph
(bar graph, line graph)

6. [S] Students will use Google slides to create a presentation for each
component of the activity.
7. [S] Students will use search engines such as google to research
information for guidelines.
8. [T] As students are working, the teacher will circulate the classroom and
provide feedback to students.
9. [S] When students are completed with their presentations, each group will
present theirs to the class.
10. [T] Teacher will ask questions and provide feedback while the students
are presenting.

Assessment PowerPoint Presentation

Collaboration My plan uses peer instruction. Students will work with each other throughout the
Strategies activity to complete it. The teacher is facilitating the instruction and students are
using their shared learning experiences as they conduct research.

Diverse The expected student audience will be a mixture of Hispanics, African Americans,
Learners and Caucasians. There will be no students that require special services.

CS Teaching Tips
1. Make your expectations explicit
2. Establish clear policies
3. Remind students about resources
4. Optimize the intro course
5. Encourage questions

Computational CT Concepts:
Thinking ● Data Collection
● Data representation
● Data Analysis

Your Reaction I feel the Learning Plan does integrate computational thinking strategies. Students
to this Plan have the opportunity to conduct research and use programs such as google slides
to compile information. Students must also organize information in the form of a
graph. I feel this lesson directly relates to real world scenarios and helps prepare
students to function in a 21st century society.

After reading Harel’s article on computational thinking. I feel that my lesson could
have been better planned to take students deeper into computational thinking.
Coding is a great additional resource to use to directly expose students to
computer science concepts.
