To show that water is a bad conductor of heat

Procedure
1. Set up the apparatus as shown in the diagram.
2. Heat the water at the top of the test tube gently to boil the water.
Observation & conclusion
This experiment demonstrates that water is a poor(bad)conductor of heat. The ice at the lower
part of the test tube does not melt quickly even when the water boils at the top.

Convection in air
In the set-up shown in the diagram, smoke is been to move through the box. The candle heats
the air above it and causes less dense air to rise, setting up convection currents. The denser
colder air is forced into the box.

Some applications of convection

Experiment to demonstrate that black surface absorbs more infrared radiation than white
surface.

Experiment to demonstrate that black surface emits more infrared radiation than white surface.

Factors affecting the rate of radiation:

1) Colour and texture of surface

Black, matt surfaces are good in both absorbing and emitting radiation.
Shiny or polished white surfaces are poor absorbers because they act better as reflectors, and
hence, poor emitters.
2) Surface temperature
The hotter the object, the more energy it radiates.
3) Surface area
The greater the area, the more energy it radiates.
