KNOW THYSELF
ANUBHAV KUMAR PATHAK
NO11 BBA 2ND YEAR KNOW THYSELF Know thyself means that you understand what you believe or in other words it means that you know your limits, your strengths and your failing and most importantly how one can use this to reduce the risk of one’s weakness. It is very important for a person to know about himself/herself as it helps in knowing what is best for the individual and how one should approach certain problems and how to accept the actual reality. This course, Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management, has helped me throughout to know more about myself. It has helped me get a reality check, telling what exactly I am. In this entire course I have been asked several questions like what kind of personality I possess, how do I get motivated, how much stress do I have what is my learning style and many more. I got the answers with several self-check tests and filling some questionnaires and some of the inferences that was gained by me were: 1) Personality Type There were two tests for knowing the personality type. The first one being the Big 5 Personality Test which consist of Extraversion, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Neuroticism and Openness to Experience. I got high score in Agreeableness which, according to theory, means that I to tend be more cooperative with other people, enjoys helping others and contribute to other people’s happiness and this is completely true I genuinely feel that I possess this kind of personality and I love to help others and think about happiness of other people a lot. The second test was of MBTI personality types and it resulted that my personality type is INTP (Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking and Prospecting), which means a person who is energized by time alone, who focuses on ideas and concepts rather than facts and details, who makes decisions based on logic and reason and who prefers to be spontaneous and flexible rather than planned and organized. 2) Learning Style There was a test to determine my dominant learning style according to Barsch Learning Style inventory and it resulted in my dominant style being visual learning. The learners who are visual-linguistic like to learn through written language, such as reading and writing tasks. They remember what has been written down, even if they do not read it more than once. They like to write down directions and pay better attention to lectures if they watch them and yes I do like to write down thing for my future use and I also use graphs, diagrams to make myself remember the things more easily and effectively. 3) Motivation Style Another important test was done to determine what kind of need does motivate me whether it is Affiliation, Power or Achievement. I scored highest on need for affiliation which means that freedom to create relationships in the workplace or during some task and be friendly with the teammates gives me motivation to do my work perfectly. I always have a friendly attitude and cooperate with other team members. 4) Stress Level This test showed that I am at a higher level of stress which is a thing to think upon for me because high level of stress causes brain to function improperly at times. This could also affect my behaviour with others as sometimes this stress burst out at someone or something. 5) Teaching Pedagogies There was a question which was to rate my interest on the teaching pedagogies that I would prefer and according to me what keeps me more engaged in a class were case studies, movie clips, role plays Ted Talks and self-assessment. 6) Career Aspiration There was also a question about what stream I wanted to pursue in my future, I am very clear about it that I am choosing Finance as my future career because, first and the foremost, I am good with numbers and have a great interest in the stock market and I am even working to develop my financial knowledge. There were few other tests too which described the kind of job that suits my personality or my interest and these all test have been very helpful to me and gave me many insights and made me think of myself in a different and better way. Just knowing what you are does not make any great difference but to work on yourself and bring change in ourselves and overcome shortcomings is what make people completely “know thyself”. So, I would also like to tell what all things I would like to change about myself. The first thing that I have to do is to reduce my stress level because I personally feel that I am getting affected by the amount of stress I take, thinking about each and everything so deeply that it starts affecting me mentally as well as physically. I have already started meditating and doing yoga and this thing is helping me a lot in reducing my stress. Being always agreeable is also a big problem for me, I hardly say NO to anyone and sometimes I feel people take advantage of it so I also have to start learning to say NO if it harms me otherwise I like to help others. Also my introversion is a slight problematic for me because talking with someone new or unknown seems a hectic task to me, I hesitate talking to new people and I want to change it. I have decide that I will slowly-slowly start talking to people and socialize more because I think that this will help me getting to know other people in a better and efficient manner. When it comes to motivation I often feel like I have lack of motivation currently and I need to regain my motivation and meditation is helping me a lot in this and I have also started spending more time with myself trying to understand where the exact problem lies and how to overcome it and regain the motivation.
