Introduction
I decided to become a teacher because there’s something special in the ability to create and appreciate
music. Creating music is something that can build confidence, social skills, and multi-faceted learning
skills. I love to see students of all ages understand concepts that were once difficult to them. Teaching
music helps me give people passion in a world where passion is so often lost to the depressing and
existential nature of our world. It really helps me believe that giving students the confidence and
passion in a musical setting can help them take that passion and put it into somewhere great for the
world’s future.
Educational Experience
I have experience teaching in both formal and informal ways. I have entertained students during a
summer camp which gave me the skills to incorporate information that wouldn’t normally be
appreciated in a fun way. I have been able to tutor subjects like Music History and give Private Voice
Lessons to peers through this skill. I have seen students go from dragging their feet into lessons or
study groups leave with a pep in their step, excited to come back the following week. Through this, I
intend to give meaning and a sense of appreciation for each piece singers have despite their first
impression by having fun and meeting the students where they are. I have held an internship position in
the Shenandoah Valley Children’s Choir (SVCC) and have learned the importance of organizational
skills and scheduling abilities in order to bond with singers. I plan on taking those organizational and
scheduling skills that took this long to develop in my student teaching to manage my time before class
in order to not waste any time of the students within class.
Teaching Philosophy
As a teacher, I aim to be kind, honest, and a soft place to fall regardless of where a student is at in their
journey. I aim to communicate to my students to accomplish this. It is important to be open and
concerned to and for my students so that they become adults that can spread that kind of energy to their
peers, bosses, and maybe even future students. I plan on teaching wholistic skills through music by
encouraging students of different backgrounds to practice their skills to demonstrate that aspect of
music. I think education is important for not only the skills necessary for a given subject but for the
social and emotional development that singing in an ensemble can provide. The world is only as good
as the demeanor of those in it, and an education really shapes the demeanor of each student.
