The principal looks for quality/grammar, research on the district, and certifications when reviewing resumes. The interview process involves applying through Applitrack, a review of resumes, possible second interviews, and teaching a lesson. New teachers should find a mentor, learn to say no strategically, and have emotional intelligence, resilience, and be creative problem solvers.

Quality/grammar, research on the district, and certifications.

Candidates apply through Applitrack. Resumes are reviewed and some are invited for a panel interview. There may be a second round of interviews and teaching a lesson observation.

Principal Interview

I had the chance to interview Mark Thomas, Principal of Northview High School, about

the interviewing process. The first question I asked Mr.Thomas was about resumes and what

things should be included. He responded by saying he always checks grammar, spelling and

quality of resumes first and then he looks for the information. He stated that he wants

candidates to have done some research about the district they are applying to and personalize it

to fit that. In addition, one of the big things he looks at is what the applicant is certified in. The

second question I asked was about Northview’s interviewing process. Mr.Thomas said

candidates apply through Applitrack and then their resumes get put into a review pool. From

there the board decides who they would like to invite for an interview. If there happen to be

multiple candidates that the board likes, they have a second round of interviews. After this if

they have not offered the candidate a job, they have them teach a lesson. Throughout the

process the board may offer a candidate a job at any point. When I asked Mr.Thomas about his

advice for first year teachers, he emphasized how important it is for first year teachers to find a

mentor. He also stated that it is crucial to learn to say a strategic “no.” He said many times first

year teachers can get too involved and start to become overwhelmed, which leads to burnout.

The next question I asked Mr.Thomas was if he looked at teacher’s portfolios. He responded by

saying that he usually looks if it is a close call between two candidates, but it is only maybe 15%

of his decision. Another question I asked was, if two candidates were equally qualified to get a

job, what would make one stand out above the other? Mr.Thomas stated that what would make
one stand out to him more would be their personality fit with his department and if the candidate

would be able to fill co-curricular positions as well. Lastly, I asked Mr.Thomas if he usually likes

to hire people from Grand Rapids. He replied by saying he doesn’t because he likes to bring

diversity to his staff. He said he wants diversity in both perspectives and cultures. He said

ultimately he is just looking for really good teachers and people.

Overall, being able to interview the principal of Northview was extremely helpful. It

allowed me to get a glimpse into the interviewing world and the behind the scenes of it all.

Additionally, it helped calm some nerves about the unknown. I am thankful for the opportunity to

gain insight and knowledge from someone who has experience with hiring perspective teachers.
