What is DALI?
DALI is really not unambiguos, it could described as:
- A famous spanish painter named Salvador Dali,

- A loudspeaker manufacturer DALI, unfortunately also written with capital letters,

- A Standard for Lighting control

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Abbreviations:
DALI Digital Adressable Lighting Interface,
DiiA Digital Illumination Interface Alliance, organisation which cares about DALI specification, certification etc.
ECG Electronic Control Gear, (=ballast), electronic interface of a DALI lamp, similar to the bus coupler unit in KNX,
Single Master Application Controller: This device i.e. a KNX DALI Gateway is the only one controlling the telegrams on
the DALI line, all other devices send only on request of the Application controller, cyclical request for status mean
more telegrams on the DALI line,
Multi Master: Devices send event driven (like KNX) telegrams, means more complex devices but reduced telegram traffic,

DALI and DALI-2 what is the background
- DALI was specified shortly after KNX begin of the 1990 targeting lighting applications,
- The specification was related only to the ECGs (electronic control gears) of the lamps,
- A strong requirement was that existing 1-10V wiring can be re-used,
- If a manufacturer assures the compatibility he can present the DALI logo.

But there were differences compared with KNX:

- The technical specifications had gaps in general, (i.e. edge steepness was defined without no. of ECG and cable length)
- DALI specified only the ECGs, manufacturer of controllers (DALI Gateways) had to make their own assumptions,
- All available sensors were proprietary and worked with specific controllers, but cannot be used in general,
- In spite of these 3 aspects there is no unified certification required,
 These are the reasons why installers and SI fight sometimes with incompatibilities.

 By these experiences it was decided to prepare DALI-2 by Digital illumination interface Alliance (=DiiA) containing:
- Close the gaps and correct the failures,
- Add new functions and devices, i.e. sensors and application controllers,
- Specify all types of devices, max. 64 ECGs and 64 sensor controllers can be connected. (depending on power)
- Offer a certification process according extended IEC 62386 basing on DALI-2 Test machines & improve compatibility,
- Be more strict on the rules, no DALI logo on products if not specified and registered.

DALI and DALI-2 what is the background
DALI-2 defines the specifications according the Device Types, please use the link to discover latest status:
https://www.digitalilluminationinterface.org/dali2/

DALI manufacturers can test their products by their own with a test machine or ask a company. The test result must be sent
to DiiA for certification.
The DALI-2 certificate is achieved if the product is listed on the DiiA homepage and the product can be marked with a DALI-2
Logo!

Which type of DALI lamps can we control with our single master controllers MTN6725-000x ?
 We support lamps (=ECGs) with DALI and DALI-2 compatibility, also mixed, but we do not support DALI-2 sensors.

Some aspects concerning DALI-2 sensors
- DALI-2 sensors are typically powered by DALI, but they can & do consume more than 2mA, it is difficult to determine the
max. devices per line, sum of all consumption should be <= 208 mA,

- DALI-2 sensors are sensitive against bad wiring, could happen that DALI GW cannot understand telegrams, (control
gears are also sensitive, but often they execute correctly commands only the feedback is not understood), max. voltage
drop is 2V,

- Max. cable length for DALI /DALI-2 depends on material, cross section, and temperature from 26 to 300 meter, too low
cross section means also a bad wiring,

- If DALI-2 sensors configuration starts with same procedure like DALI lamps, “configuration by feet's”, so it is not
convenient,

- DALI-2 sensors without an application controller must not send telegrams to control gears directly, DALI-2 sensors with
an application controller can control ECGs directly, but what about the coordination of different app. Controller,

- KNX sensors offer more control opportunities, Example: A weekly timer can control a pres.detector and the result is
transmitted to KNX HVAC actuators, to KNX blind actuators, to KNX switch actuators to switch lamps and to KNX DALI
Gateway for lighting with tunable white, so less configuration work for KNX DALI controller

New 1: Post installation feature

• In the previous version when executing a post installation,

ECGs that no longer exist or could not be found was deleted
from the gateway internal memory.
• Problem when adding new ECGs:
Already configured ECGs that were intentionally unpowered
due to installation work, were deleted and the new once got
their released addresses.

• In the new version it is possible to select to keep already

commissioned ECGs, even when they are not found
• Usually ECGs have no short address and long address
0xFFFFFF by delivery. However, it might be possible that
ECGs have a short address even if the long address is
0xFFFFFF (i.e. if an external config tool was used). Such
short addresses can now be deleted by checkbox.

New 2: Extras in the DCA

• Export ETS-DCA configuration

• The ETS-DCA configuration can be exported as a XML file
• Import ETS-DCA configuration
• A previously saved device configuration can be loaded into ETS.
• Read Device Configuration
• All data from the DALI gateway is exported and transferred to the ETS-DCA configuration.

KNX DALI gateway Basic Update
New 3: Scenes can be assigned scene number 1-64

• In the previous version, the 16 scenes had fixed scene numbers 1-16, 1:1 (recalled with value 0-15)
• Now it is possible to assign any of the available scene numbers 1-64 to the 16 scenes
• Same flexibility as we have in the switch, dimming and blind actuators

Note: To use this feature, the gateway must have FW 0.2.0 or higher. If the gateway has lower FW, it can
only use the old scene numbering 1-16. A warning appears by downloading the scenes and the scene
numbers in the DCA will be set back to 1:1 in case you accept it.

Control ECG power line via external switch actuator (only for groups)

• Normally the DALI ECGs are permanently powered

and on/off switching of the lamp is done internally.
The ECGs then consumes some standby power also
when the lamp is off.
• This function support switching on/off the power to the
ECGs of a group via an external switch actuator
• When the group is switched off via any function, an off-
telegram is sent via object “Control ECG Power Line” after a
delay time (min 10s) to the switch actuator
• When the group is switched on via any function, the object will
send an on telegram. The first DALI-telegram to the group will
be delayed (according to the max. start-up time of ECGs
Example group 1, function is
specified in the standard).

Time and template enable/disable via the bus

• Time and date

• For the operation of the time control function, the correct time
(including weekday) and date are required on the device.
Until it is received, the time control module is disabled.
• Time and date has to be provided from KNX via the
corresponding group objects, for example from a Wiser 4
KNX/SpaceLynk or Year Time Switch
• Time must be received at least once a day due to the
accuracy of the internal time calculation in the gateway
• After startup of the gateway, it will send read requests for
time and date to the bus
• Enable/disable templates via objects
• If option “Template controlled by KNX object” was selected a
corresponding group object is available

In this example a single ECG (RGBW) changes colour in a loop, if the lamp is on.
The brightness (and on/off state) is not controlled by the effect program in this case (hence ”Keep value”).
The on/off/value can be sent from a KNX sensor or time switch.

Effect module - Control via the bus

• 1 byte object to start and stop effects

• Controlling effects is similar to the KNX scene concept
• Bit 7: 1 = start
0 = stop
KNX control Stop Start
• Bit 6–0: effect no. 0-15
• Scene push-button: long push = start Effect 1 0 128
short push = stop Effect 2 1 129
• Stop → Start means restart from the beginning, no ……
interruption Effect 15 14 142
• Panic / Emergency mode disables effects Effect 16 15 143
• An effect will not start staircase timers

Emergency lighting - DALI DT-1

• For an emergency light with self-contained

battery (1 DALI device) the ECG type must
be set before commissioning, otherwise the
ECG can not be assigned

Emergency lighting - General settings affecting all emergency lights

• Supports the execution and recording of the

mandatory Function and Duration tests.
• The tests can be started via KNX object
and via the web server
• The test results are sent to KNX and must
be handled and stored by another device
(e.g. BMS or spaceLYnk)
• One of two different sets of objects can be
selected
• Objects according to new KNX standard
• Objects according to old style (before KNX
standard was definied)
New KNX Standard
• The two types gives different information,
e.g new standard:
• Status object includes if emergecy mode is active
• Misses separate Battery test and some battery
information (battery failure, battery time too short) Legacy ”old” style

New Post installation feature

Such
short addresses can now be deleted by checkbox

Restore in the DCA

• The restore function is used to completely restore a KNX

DALI-gateway, for example by replacing it with a completely
unprogrammed device
• All DALI relevant data from the ETS are written into the device
and after that the gateway restarts automatically.
Note that nothing is written to ECGs, this method cannot be
used to reprogram the DALI ECGs, e.g. incase a New
installation was done by mistake (no recovery possible).
• Note that this only applies to the DALI configuration. The
normal ETS application download has also to be performed.

Extras menu in the DCA
• Import ETS-DCA Configuration
• Import an previously exported configuration
• Import a backup from the previous plug-in. A gateway can the
be updated without need to do the DALI commissioning again.
ETS parameters still have to be configured.
• Press Restore to transfer data to the gateway (see previous slide)
• Export the ETS-DCA configuration
• Read device configuration
• All data from the gateway is transferred to the DCA-configuration, e.g.
if configuration has been done in the web server or via the display
• Read Device Descriptions (of ECGs, Groups, Scenes)
• The descriptions entered in the web server can be transferred to the DCA.
Only 10 character can be entered in the web server.
• Write Device Descriptions (of ECGs, Groups, Scenes)
• The descriptions in the DCA is written to the web server,
truncated to 10 characters
