CHAPTER 10
Circle

VERY SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS circle can have on a diameter?

Ans : [Board Term-2, 2012 Set (34)]
1. In the given figure, AOB is a diameter of the circle
with centre O and AC is a tangent to the circle at A Tangent touches a circle on a distinct point. Thus on
. If +BOC = 130° , the find +ACO. the diameter of a circle only two parallel tangents can
be drawn. It has been shown in figure given below.

4. In figure, PA and PB are tangents to the circle with

centre O such that +APB = 50º. Write the measure
of +OAB.

Ans : [Foreign Set I, II, III, 2016]

Here OA is radius and AC is tangent at A, since
radius is always perpendicular to tangent, we have
+OAC = 90º
From exterior angle property,
+BOC = OAC + +ACO
130º = 90° + +ACO Ans : [Delhi CBSE Board, 2015, Set I, II, III]
+ACO 130º - 90º = 40º
We have +APB = 50º
2. From an external point P , tangents PA and PB are
+PAB = +PBA = 180º - 50º = 65º
drawn to a circle with centre O. If +PAB = 50º, then 2
find +AOB. Here OA is radius and AP is tangent at A, since
Ans : [Delhi Set I, II, III, 2016] radius is always perpendicular to tangent at point of
contact, we have
As per the given question we draw the figure as below.
+OAP = 90º
Now +OAB = +OAP - +PAB
= 90º - 65º = 25º

5. In the given figure, PQ and PR are tangents to the

circle with centre O such that +QPR = 50º, Then
find +OQR.

Since PA = OA , +OAP = 90c

+OAB = +OAP - +BAP
= 90º - 50º = 40º
Since OA and OB are radii, we have
+OAB = +OBA = 40º
Now
+AOB + +OAB + +OBA = 180º
Ans : [Board Term-2, 2012 ] ,Delhi CBSE Term II, 2015 Set I, II,
+AOB + 40º + 40º = 180º III]
+AOB = 180º - 80º = 100º
We have +QPR = +50º (Given)
Hence +AOB = 100º
Since +QOR and +QPR are supplementary angles

+QOR = 180º - +QPR 1 = a
2 OP
= 180º - 50º = 130º
From TOQR we have or OP = 2a

+OQR = +ORQ = 180º - 130º 8. If a circle can be inscribed in a parallelogram how will
2
the parallelogram change?
= 50º = 25º Ans : [Board Term II, 2014]
2
It changes into a rectangle or a square.
6. If PQ and PR are two tangents to a circle with center
O. If +QPR = 46º then find +QOR . 9. Two concentric circles are of radii 5 cm and 3 cm.
Find the length of the chord of larger circle (In cm)
which touches the smaller circle.
Ans : [Foreign Set I, II, III, 2014]
As per the given question we draw the figure as below.

Ans : [Delhi, CBSE, Term-2, 2014]

We have +QPR = 46º

Since +QOR and +QPR are supplementary angles
+QOR + +QPR = 180º
+QOR + 46º = 180º Here AB is the chord of large circle which touch
the smaller circle at point C . We can see easliy that
+QOR = 180º - 46º = 134º TAOC is right angled triangle.
7. If the angle between two tangents drawn from an Here, AO = 5 cm, OC = 3 cm
external point P to a circle of radius a and center O, AC = AO2 - OC2
is 60º, then find the length of OP.

+OAP = 90º Since +OPQ + +QPQ is right angle triangle,
Due to symmetry we have +OPQ = 90c - 50c = 40c
Since, OP = OQ because of radii of circle, we have
+AOP = +AOB = 120c = 60c

Given that +SPT = 120c

As OP bisects +SPT ,
+OPS = 120c = 60c

Ans : [Delhi Set I, II, III, 2016]
Since radius is always perpendicular to tangent,
+PTO = 90c Since AF and AD are tangent of the circle, AF = AD
Now in right triangle POS , we have Let AF = AD = x
cos 60c = PS Now DB = AB - AD = 12 - x
OP
Since BD and BE are tangent of the circle, BD = BE
1 = PS
2 OP Thus BE = BD = 12 - x
OP = 2PS Hence proved. Now CE = CB - BE = 8 - (12 - x)
2. Prove that the lengths of two tangents drawn from an Since CF and CE are tangent of the circle, CF = CE

AP = PB
2x = 10 + 4 = 14
x =7
Thus AD = 7 cm, BE = 5 cm, CF = 3 cm

Find the length of chord AB .

We join OA, OB and OP .

Proof :
In TPAO and TPBO , OP is common and
OA = OB radius of same circle
Since radius is always perpendicular to tangent, at

Ans : [Delhi Set I, II, III, 2016]
Thus TPAO , TPBO .
Since length of 2 tangents drawn from an external

circle of radius 4 cm, such that the segments BD and From equation (1) and (2) we have
DC are of lengths 8 cm and 6 cm respectively. Find 48x2 + 672x = 16 ^x + 14h2
AB and AC .
48x (x + 14) = 16 ^x + 14h2
3x = x + 14
or, x =7
Thus AC = 6 + 7 = 13 cm
and AB 8 + 7 = 15 cm.

11. In the figure, tangents PQ and PR are drawn from an

external point P to a circle with centre O , such that
+RPQ = 30c. A chord RS is drawn parallel to the
tangent PQ . Find +RQS .

We redraw the given circle by joining AO , BO and
CO shown in figure below. Let length of AF be x .

Ans : [Delhi CBSE Term-2, 2015, (Set I, II, III)]

Since length of tangents from an external point to a
circle are equal,
PR = PQ
Now +PRQ = +PQR = 180c - 30c
2

= 150c = 75c
2
Since SR || QP , +SRQ and +RQP are alternate
Since length of tangents from an external point to a angle
circle are equal,
+SRQ = +RQP = 75c
At A, AF = AE = x (2)
Thus SQ = RQ
At B BF = BD = 8 cm (3)
and +RSQ = +SRQ = 75c
At C CD = CE = 6 cm (4)
In triangle TAQR
Now AB = x + 8
+SQR + +QSR + +QRS = 180c
AC = x + 6
+SQR + 75c + 75c = 180c
BC = 8 + 6 = 14 cm
+SQR = 180c - 150c = 30c
Perimeter of circle
Thus +SQR = 30c.
p = AB + BC + CA

tangent at B and +ABC = 50c. Find +AOC . circles of unequal radii. Prove that AB = CD .

Ans : [Board Term-2, 2015] Ans : [Delhi Compt. Set III 2017]
Tangent drawn at any point of a circle is perpendicular We redraw the given figure by extending AB and BD
to the radius through the point contact. which intersect at P as shown in figure below
Therefore +A = 90c
Now in DDAB we have
+D + +A + +B = 180c
+D + 90c + 50c = 180c
+D = 40c
Angle subtended at the centre is always 2 time of
angle subtended at circumference by same arc. Thus
+AOC = 2+ADC = 2+D
= 2 # 40c = 80c Since length of tangents from an external point to a
circle are equal,
13. In figure PQ is a tangent from an external point P
to a circle with centre O and OP cuts the circle at T PA = PC
and +QOR is a diameter. It +POR = 130c and S is and PB = PD
a point on the circle, find +1 + +2 .
Now, PA - PB = PC - PD
AB = CD Hence Proved

15. In the given figure, PA and PB are tangents to the

circle from an external point P . CD is another tangent
touching the circle at PA = 12 cm, QC = QD = 3 cm,
then find PC + PI.

Ans : [Delhi Compt. Set I, II, III 2017]

Here +OQP = 90c because radius is always
perpendicular to tangent at point of contact.
Angle subtended at the centre is always 2 time of
angle subtended at circumference by same arc. Thus
+2 = 1 +TOR = 1 +POR Ans : [Delhi Compt. Set I, II, III 2017]

Since length of tangents from an external point to a
= 1 # 130c = 65c circle are equal,
2
CA = CQ = 3 cm
Now +POQ = 180c - 130c = 50c
DQ = DB = 3 cm
+1 = 180c - +OQP - +POQ
and PB = PA = 12 cm
= 180c - 90c - 50c = 40c
PA + PB = PC + CA + PD + DA
Now +2 + +1 = 65c + 40c = 105c
PC + PD = PA - CA + PB - DB
14. In the figureAB and CD are common tangents to two

Chap 10 : Circle www.rava.org.in
Let the radius of circle be x . As per given in question
we draw the figure shown below.

Since length of tangents from an external point to a

circle are equal,
At A, AP = AR = 5 - x (1)
At B BP = BQ = x (2)
At C CR = CQ = 12 - x (3)

Here, AB = 5 cm, BC = 12 cm and TB = 90º

Now AC = 122 + 52
= 144 + 25
= 169 = 13 cm
Now AC = AR + RC
13 = 5 - x + 12 - x
2x = 17 - 13 = 4
x = 4 = 2 cm
2
Hence, radius of the circle is 2 cm.
