THE EFFECTIVENESS OF POWTOON TO THE ACADEMIC

PERFORMANCE OF GRADE 11 ICT STUDENTS IN EDSCI

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

People today are very intelligent when you talk about the internet we all know that the

internet plenty of things can do not just for having fun or for yourself but also to help people in

stuff that they do to make it easy for them the situation that they face when they use it. The

Internet is the best way to manage the variety of tasks that you need to do an example for

educational sites like powtoon.

Powtoon creates to become one of the important parts of higher education, provides

significant content tools in many forms and online classes. The effective use of this software as

an educational tool is to enhance how to manage awareness, maximize student engagement and

to acknowledge active learning.

Powtoon can widen your knowledge through the use of this like engaged inside and

outside the classroom. PowToon in Education PowToon is a web-based tool that offers a wide

array of media options, graphics, cartoons, and animated images to create animated

presentations that flow smoothly and logically. PowToon is user-friendly allowing teachers to

craft their own presentations that meet their students’ needs instead of constantly searching for

appropriate, ready-made videos.


Numerous instructive establishments today are deciding to make their own videos, for

Classrooms and coursework purposes,but also for student, staff and. An ever increasing number

of schools are going to full-support video creation organizations to encourage this kind of idea.

Education potential acquiring a variety of abilities in diverse fields that are essential to

our life and very existence. These capabilities can be often received by means of school room

training. This type of training, that is referred to as education, is commonly deemed as formal

education. However, through the start of more recent technology, during the 21st century,

education has passed through so many changes. Therefore, these tools are used and utilized to

healthy in the existing education for the new set of learners. Educational technology was

developed.

Basic access to the resources of a traditional site may help participants learn wherever

they are, leaving them to choose a particular design of a moving presentation for their study to do

a certain activity. With basically an Internet connection, a person can access it. One of the most

important things to keep in mind is that watching a video that can be a passive experience, much

as reading can be. To make the most of our educational videos, we need to help students do the

processing and self-evaluation that will lead to the learning we want to see.

Modernization of instructional materials is spreading to different schools because of the

benefits and great features that offers of the tool. Teachers use very exciting and visual materials

these days to show their lessons in different ways. Therefore, these kinds of tools are used to

make the lessons great, fun and understandable.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM


The study aims to determine the effects of Powtoon to the Grade 12 students of EDSCI during the

first semester. The following questions shows the main factors of the study:

1. How frequently does the student use Powtoon when it comes to learning?

2. What are the academic performance of Grade 12 students in EDSCI during their first

semester?

3. What are the effects of Powtoon to the students?

HYPOTHESIS

The effects of Powtoon has no significant effect on the academic performance of Grade

12 ICT students.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The research was conducted at Escuela de Sophia. This study covers only grade 12 senior

high school students. This study focuses on the effects of Powtoon on their academic performance

and on how it will benefit them in the first semester.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The results of the study may be of great benefit to the following:

Students- The result of this study may determine how they get ideas on online information and

they use it on their own and in their study and in order to increase their content.

Parent- This study may help the parents if Powtoon has an actual benefit to the academic

performance of their children.

Teachers- The given data would guide teachers and may get an idea to share with students what

they know about online information and teach them to students to learn more about their online

information.
Future Researcher- This research may greatly benefit future researchers in their study about

online information. This will guide them and give them ideas in the future.

The researchers make out that the independent variable in this study is the effectiveness of powtoon

because this variable is the reason why the academic performance of grade 12 students at EDSCI

had changes in their performance when they use it and the dependent variable in this study is the

academic performance of grade 12 students of EDSCI because their academic performance

depends on how the powtoon can change their performance if its really effective the powtoon to

them.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

The important terms used in this study have been defined.

The following terms are:


Online Learning- It is an education that takes place over the internet. It refers to those people who

cannot participate in traditional learning.

Visual learning – it’s a kind of style that using visuals to increase the student’s understanding and

it’s for people who see information are more likely understandable.

Educational websites – it includes games, videos or topics that are related sources that act as a

tool to enhance learning.

Powtoon - is Web-based animation software that allows you to quickly and easily create animated

presentations with your students by manipulating pre-created objects, imported images, provided

music and user created voice-overs.

Academic Performance- is the measurement of student achievement of the Grade 12 Tech Voc

Students.

Effectiveness - is the capability of producing the desired result or the ability to produce the desired output.

When something is deemed effective, it means it has an intended or expected outcome or produces a deep,

vivid impression.

Information Communication and Technology or ICT strand - is one of the strands offered in the

Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) Track in senior high school. It is designed to provide you with the

technical skills and knowledge in using tools and equipment that allows people to interact in the digital

world.

Cloud-based software - allows users access to software applications that run on shared computing

resources (for example, processing power, memory, and disk storage) via the Internet).

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Foreign Literature

According to Bevan (2019) the usage of videos as teaching and learning material would help not
only students, but also teachers and their affiliated institutions. A 2015 study conducted by software
company ‘Kaltura’ found that 93% of educators agree that the use of educational videos improves the
learning experience. The online nature of videos enables them to be shared at all hours of the day
or night around the world. Educational institutions can gain great autonomy by using videos to reach
their broad audience. We can be used to include and engage future, current and former students. Powtoon
is a site that is used for educational purposes where you can make videos and are usually used for learning
and teaching purposes which is much alike like Kaltura, an online software used to make videos and
according to this study is found effective and accessible at anytime and anywhere.

According to Puspitarini, Akhyar, Djono (2019) it is expected that media use in education
can improve student learning outcomes. It is possible to use the media to communicate
information to all subjects. Social studies are one of the topics that rarely use innovation-based
media, especially in historical material, because the method of teaching makes it easier to tell or
pass historical material. Powtoon's choice of applications in advancing learning media is
attributable, for example, to the highlights found in Powtoon applications, penmanship liveliness,
animation operation, and others that will pull in the consideration of understudies, particularly at
the rudimentary level of instruction.

According to Hsin and Cigas (2013) Use of video mini-readings to enhance the computer science
/ mathematics online introductory course. Students were more pleased with the course after adding the
videos and were more likely to stay with a passing score in the class. Average grades in the class slightly
increased, but with a significantly higher percentage of students’ attentiveness and less interference by the
teacher. Powtoon is an online software where you can make videos which can be used for teaching which
according to this study resulted in a positive outcome with less involvement of the teacher with the help
of videos.

LOCAL LITERATURE

According to Furigay (2016), the use of videos in teaching is widely practiced due to
their variety of content and acceptability among students. Learners of the 21st century definitely
need to look at it. Visual literacy is commonly used to enhance the comprehension of students
and helps to improve the other macro skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Viewing
allows students to learn effectively. Students are introduced to a variety of situations using
viewing materials that can help them understand specific real-life situations. Powtoon is an
online software where you can make educational video presentations which can be used as
teaching material in classrooms which according to this study the usage of visual literacy in
terms of teaching allows students to learn and understand topics more clearly.

According to Sun Star Pampanga (2017) Technology evolution has a major impact on the
learner's learning. Araling Panlipunan teachers can use ICT to make the class more engaging by using
slide presentation, video lectures, and film screening. Students will be involved in participation once they
are introduced to the video lesson. Furthermore, the negative impact on the topic can turn into positive,
such as turning traditional methods into creative solutions such as the approach based on ICT. Powtoon is
an online software where you can make video presentations which can be used for educational purposes
which according to Umayam (2019) increases motivation and deeper learning.

According to Garcia (2018) Modern-day educators are looking very different from the traditional
way with books we’ve grown to know. They’re carrying significantly less papers and books, teaching in
more diverse environments and subjects, and, in some cases, they’re even conducting lessons without
actually being face-to-face with their class. Teachers, just like students, are already being disrupted by the
digital revolution. Computers, the Internet, and downloadable modules are just some of the tools they’re
currently using to make the classroom more dynamic and fast-paced for students. On-site facilitators can
download a teacher’s video course, and use it in an infinite number of makeshift classrooms in remote
areas. Powtoon is an online software where you can make videos that are usually created for class
presentations as learning material for students, it is helpful to those who are taking online classes and
schools that have a flipped classrooms program which according to this study is also more dynamic and
fast paced.

FOREIGN STUDY

According to Beheshti et al. (2018) today, video plays a significant role in education in terms of
its integration into traditional classes, and be the principal delivery system of information in classes
particularly in online courses as well as serving as a foundation for many blended classes. Many research
analyses have presented that technology is a vital tool that can improve the learning skills of learners
(Allen & Smith, 2012;El-Senousy & Alquda, 2017;Hsin & Cigas, 2013;Kay, 2012;Lloyd & Robertson,
2012;Rackaway, 2012;Schmid et al., 2014;Uzunboylu, Baglama, Ozer, Kucuktamer & Kuimova,
2017;Uzunboylu, Hursen, Ozuturk & Demirok, 2015). Therefore, the use of instructional videos has
increased in recent years (Gold & Holodynski, 2017) Powtoon is an online software where you can create
animated presentations which according to Gebska (2014) makes learning more interactive and
interesting; animations are excellent aid to teachers when it comes to explaining difficult subjects and
with the help of it, students will be able to remember a certain topic and even be able to describe it.

He, Swenson and Lents (2012) explained in their study “Online Video Tutorials Increase Learning of
Difficult Concepts in an Undergraduate Analytical Chemistry Course” that to be able to evaluate the
effectiveness of the tutorials, students’ oral and written feedback, pre- and post-video-tutoring exam
performance, and data from previous classes taught by the same instructor were looked into. Results show
that online video tutorials are a valuable, flexible, and energy-saving tool to improve the performance of
the students when it comes to chemistry problem solving. Powtoon is a software where you can make
videos which can be used as teaching material which according to this study is very effective since
students were able to perform it and understand how to solve chemistry problems with the use of videos.

Salina et al. (2012) “Effectiveness of an educational video as an instrument to refresh and reinforce the
learning of a nursing technique: a randomized controlled trial” in which the findings of the randomized
controlled trial (RCT) found that students who had seen the video were better able to apply the technique,
resulting in better quality. Powtoon is a software where you can make videos which can be used as a
teaching tool which according to this study is very effective since students were able to perform nursing
techniques and understand it more clearly.

LOCAL STUDY

According to Mendoza, Caranto, and David (2015) Video-based resources promote the creativity
and communication of students. Exposure to video can help motivate students in their learning
experience and create a distinctive experience. Questionnaires were given to 224 Benguet State
University students to measure the effectiveness of video presentation to the learning of the
student. It is also revealed that the efficiency rate of video presentation for learning students is
highly effective. Powtoon is a site that is used to create educational videos that can be used for
presentations by students or teachers which according to this study, video usage as an
educational tool is found highly effective.

According to CALO-OY, GEMMA. (2015) in their study “Use of Films in Teaching English
Literature” frequently watch and movie features that keep their interest, and explored ways in
which films are to be used in teaching. Based on the findings, educators still need to develop the
ways in which films are taught in the classroom. For the students to become highly interested in
the lesson, various methods should be used. Teachers must be creative in the way films are used.
There is a need for adequate knowledge on the characteristics of films that can hold the viewers'
attention. The study reveals that the use of films in English literature teaching would enhance
student learning. Films can be used for learning and teaching purposes, it can also be created in
Powtoon since one of the features when it comes to creating videos in Powtoon is making
animations using tools in the site.

According to Abawan (2019) Academic grades of selected students suggest that their
performance level improved after the teacher integrated the use of YouTube-based videos and
learning resources into their Araling Panlipunan classroom routines. Compared to the traditional
way, the use of YouTube videos and content resulted in better academic performance. This study
revealed a significant difference between the grades of students in their Araling Panlipunan class
before and after the integration of YouTube videos. Videos that are created from Powtoon can be
shared on YouTube and can be shown as learning and teaching material.
CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter explains the research design, research setting, research subjects, research

instrument, and the data gathering procedure that will be used in the study.

Research Design

The research design used in the study was a quasi-experimental research design. According to

Price, Jhangiani, and Chiang It (2019) involves the manipulation of an independent variable without

the random assignment of participants to conditions or orders of conditions. The two variables are

Powtoon and the academic performance of the Grade 12 ICT students. The study aims to know

the results of the academic performance of Grade 12 ICT students from their usage of Powtoon.

Research Settings

The study was conducted in Escuela de Sophia of Caloocan Inc. to the effectiveness of the

powtoon to academic performance. Primary respondents were the Grade 12 ICT students
currently using the classrooms at the Senior High school building of Escuela De Sophia of

Caloocan Inc.

Research Subjects

The target subjects of this study was the grade 12 ICT students of Escuela de Sophia of Caloocan

Inc. Respondents were chosen using Simple Random Sampling. Respondents of the section ICT

to have data for this research.

Research Instrument

The research instrument used in the research is pre-test and post-test. A pre-test and post-test is a

set of printed or written questions that determined their performance before and after using the

tool, devised for the purpose of a survey of statistical study.

Data Gathering Procedure

A pre-test and post-test were prepared by the researchers with the help of Mr. Dave Ablay. An

experiment where measurements are taken both before and after treatment. When the

questionnaire is prepared, a letter will be created by the researchers, it will be approved and

signed by Mr. Jayson Dechavez, Mr. Jerome Baraquio, Mrs. Jely Ann Placido and Ms. Mary Joy

Apurong and shall be presented to the respondents as they answer the pre-test and post-test.

When all the responses are collected from the respondents. The researchers will search for an
applicable statistical instrument that will be used for tallying and analysis of the results. The

results will be interpreted by the researchers which will serve as the last step for the data

gathering procedure.

Statistical Treatment

This will be used to analyze the data gathered to determine whether there is a significant

difference between the use of Powtoon and the academic performance of the Grade 12 TechVoc

students. Therefore this formula is used:
