Assistive Aid Technology?

Assistive Aid Technology (ATT) or simply Assistive Technology (AT) are devices and
support systems that aid people with disabilities to help them to perform activities of
daily living independently, or even with assistance. They are revolutionary in that these
devices can help people to improve their social participation.

Assistive technology reduces the need for formal health and support services, long-
term care and the work of caregivers. Globally, more than one billion people need
one or more assistive products. Today, only one in ten people in need have access to
assistive products. Hearing aids, wheelchairs, walkers, communication aids, spectacles,
prostheses, pill organizers and memory aids are all examples of assistive products.

Choosing the
RIGHT WHEELCHAIR
Wheelchairs are one of those crucial assistive aids that more or less becomes a part of human
body to the user. And hence, selecting the right wheelchair is essential to the wellbeing and care
of the user.
The World Health Organization has created a standardized guideline to selecting the correct and
appropriate wheelchair.
Choosing the right wheelchair depends on three major points:

• Body Dimensions and Health Conditions

Usage and Environment Accessibility

Depending on the usage, different types of wheelchairs are prescribed. The usage is defined
based on short term seating and long term seating which enables greater mobility and
maneuvarability. Most often short term seating chairs are defined under standard category of
wheelchair and long term seating are mainly defined around Standard premium also known as
Semi Active wheelchair, Active wheelchair and Positioning chairs.

Body Dimensions and Health Conditions

In terms of long terms seating it is always important to consider Proper measurements of the user and the
selection of the right wheelchair i.e – Folding or Rigid chair, Active wheelchair or Positioning chairs.

The solution for all long term seating chairs can be derived by customization of different parts/accessories
of the wheelchairs etc, which is only possible in Active wheelchair and Positioning wheelchair.

Major points to note are:

Physical and Medical Needs

The wheelchair selection should suite the medical and physical needs of the user. It should allow the user
