Quarter First Quarter
Time Allotment 50 minutes
Content Standard The learners demonstrate understanding of recycle, reduce, reuse,
recover and repair in waste management
Performance Standard The learner uses local, recycle solid and/or liquid materials in
making useful products.
Learning Competency Recognize the importance of recycle, reduce, reuse, recover and
repair in waste management.
( S5MT-Ie-g-3 )
I. Learning 15. Describe the following waste management practices; Reduce,
Objectives Reuse and Recycle (K)
II. Subject Describing Waste Management Practices; Recycle, Reduce and
Matter Reuse
A. Concept There are different types of waste management practices: The 3
common practices are reduce, reuse, recycle.
Reduce=> make less garbage.
Reuse=>Use again, Donate or sell re-usable items.
Recycle=> turn an item into another useful item.
B. Materials Laptop, projector, charts, pictures, concrete materials such as
empty plastic bottles, candy wrappers, used jar and others

III. Learning Task
A. Engage  Teacher presents envelopes with pictures.
I have here an envelope, inside it were pictures that you
are going to group them according to biodegradable and
non-biodegradable. You will do this by group. (group
pupils into 5 groups ) use this chart to show your answer.

Classify the pictures according to:

Biodegradable Non-Biodegradable
 What are the different biodegradable materials did you
see? (paper, leaves, magazines) Why do you think they
are biodegradable materials? What are biodegradable
materials? (waste that easily decay)
 What are the different non-biodegradable materials did
you see? (plastic, bottle.) Why do you think they are non-
biodegradable materials? (they do not easily decay) What
are non-biodegradable materials? (waste that do not
easily decay)
Let’s have a game, it’s called “Pass the Ball”. On the screen you
will see some questions. You will pass the ball while there’s
music. When the music stops, whoever holds the ball will answer
the question. If you get the correct answer you will receive prize
from me.

 Do you know how much do Filipinos throw away wastes

in a day? Who could guess? (Filipinos throw out over 163
million sachets and 93 million plastic bags each day that is
why NGO’s like Greenpeace Philippines are campaigning
for “No Single Plastic Use”.) How should we throw away
our waste materials? (By segregating them) Why do we
need to segregate these waste materials into
biodegradable and non-biodegradable? (To separate what
kind of waste should be send at what facility for further
processing so that we can easily notice and separate
all biodegradable which can be used as a fertilizer while
the non-biodegradable can be recycled.) What causes
wastes materials to our environment? (It can cause
pollution to our land water and air) What could be the
effect of waste materials to people and animals? (It
creates health problems to humans as well as to animals,
it destroys the habitat of animals and we could die from
toxic chemicals produced by wastes) What should we do
since producing waste materials in inevitable? (To reduce
the amount of waste is to generate less waste in the first
place.) What should we do in order to prevent us from
getting diseases or illnesses?(We should maintain our
surroundings clean. We should throw our garbage
properly. We should practice waste segregation.)

 Vocabulary building:
I have here some words that you may find in our lesson
today. I will use this word in a sentence. Tell the meaning
of these words. Raise your hands if want to recite.

1. Rina segregate her trash into biodegradable and non-

biodegradable.
2. Mr. Jose use durable glasses instead of using plastics
to lessen garbage.
3. Joana made a new bag out of her juice packs. She
turned the juice packs into a new product.
Trash – discarded materials
Lessen – to make something less
Product – something made or created
(Process skills: observing, communicating and classifying )
B. Explore Activity 1
 Today you are going to view a video on the 3R’s.
(Kids video on 3R’s) https://youtu.be/TjnNOCbuoCA)
What should you remember while watching the video?
(Avoid unnecessary noise...)
While watching the video, try to answer this,
What are the 3 R’s?
After the video, teacher asks some comprehension
questions.
What is the video all about? (The video is about the 3’Rs.)
What are these 3’Rs? (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)
Activity 2
 Today we are going to talk about waste management
practices. You are going to work by group. I will give 3
cards with different situation to each group, analyze and
discuss (among your group) the situation and answer the
guide questions. Write your answer on the card.
 Setting of standard
1. Share ideas and cooperate with the group.
2. Avoid unnecessary noise.
3. Avoid playing while doing the activity.
4. Work within the given 10 minute time frame.

GROUP 1

GROUP 2:
GROUP 3:

GROUP 4
They will make a song that explains the 3 R’s.

GROUP 5
They are going to make a role play on how to apply 3 R’s at
home.

 Go around and check the pupils while they are working.

 Answers pupils’ query if necessary.
 Remind the pupils that they will be presenting their
output after 10minutes

(Process Skills: observing,communicating ,classifying)

5. Explanation  Ask the pupils to present their output (each group will
present their output)
 Make corrections if needed
 Teacher assesses the presentation using rubrics ( see
attached rubrics)
 Answering of guide questions – based on the group
presentation.

Answer for group 1

1. What does each situation describe? Is it reduce, reuse or
recycle?(reduce)
2. Why do you say that the situation shows reduce? ((because
the situation showed how to lessen garbage)
3. Is it important to practice waste management?
(yes)Why?(to make less garbage)

Answer for group 2

1. What does each situation describe? Is it reduce, reuse or
recycle? (reuse)
2. Why do you say that the situation shows reduce? ((because
the situation showed how to reuse garbage)
3. Is it important to practice waste management? (yes) Why?
(to make less garbage)

Answer for group 3

1. What does each situation describe? Is it reduce, reuse or
recycle? (recycle)
2. Why do you say that the situation shows reduce? ((because
the situation showed how to recycle garbage)
3. Is it important to practice waste management? (yes) Why?
(to make less garbage)

Group 4- Song Presentation.

1. Were the group 4 able to explain the 3 R’s thru a song?
2. What are the 3 R’s? Explain the 3 R’s?
3. Why is it important to follow waste management?

Group 5 - Role play

1. How did they show the 3 R’s in their role play?
2. Do we need to consider the things that we use at home?
Why?

What is the importance of recycle? Reduce? and reuse?

Cite some examples using reduce? Reuse? Recycle?
What do you think will happen if we will not practice the 3R’s?
What value did you learn today?
(Process skills: observing and communicating)
6. Elaboration What are the 3 R’s of waste management?(recycle, reduce,
reuse)
What do you mean by recycle, reuse, and reduce?
Reduce=> make less garbage.
Reuse=>Use again, Donate or sell re-usable items.
Recycle=> turn an item into another useful item.)
What is the importance of recycle? Reduce?and reuse? (to lessen
our waste)

Note : The main concepts are suggested to be prepared ahead

either in manila paper of ICT-aided medium. This is to be given
after the teacher has called out students to generalize concepts
so they have common lesson to master.

Reduce=> make less garbage. For example, instead

of buying juice boxes for lunch, buy a large
container of juice and use a washable single serving
container to take it to school.
buy items in refillable containers
 Use cloth bag/eco bag/paper bag/native
baskets instead of plastic bag, when you buy
groceries.
 Avoid buying disposable items or single use
products such as batteries, razors, utensils,
plates, cups etc.
 Reducing is important because they decrease
the amount of waste on the planet and
preserve natural resources by maintaining
space and cutting down on landfills.
 Reduce consumption of new material and
save energy.
Recycle=> turn an item into another useful item. For
example, scrap paper from the classroom might be
turned into newspaper or paper bags when sent to the
recycling plant.
 Do not throw away used newspapers or used
writing pads. Sell them or bring them into
usable paper again.
 Use bottles, tin cans rubber tires can be
recycled into useful materials.
Reuse=> Donate or sell re-usable items.
 Use both sides of paper and printing and re-
use as scratch paper, gift wrapper, etc.
 Consider the potential life span or durability
when buying new products.
 Buy durable food/storage containers and
reuse them instead of using foil, plastic
bags/wrap.
 Materials that can be reuse are empty cans,
bottle of all sizes, cups plates, glasses, broken
iron grills, wood parts of furniture, medicine
vials, cosmetic bottle, and trays.
The importance of reuse is to prevent solid
waste from entering the landfill, improve our
communities, and increase the materials.

Which do you think is the best way to practice waste

management?(the 3 R’s are the best way to practice waste
management)
What will you do to your trash at home?(segregate as to reuse,
recycle, reduce)
If you practice waste management at home, what value are you
practicing?(cleanliness)

Now each group will give the meaning of the 3 R’s and write
situations that shows waste management practices using the
Graphic organizer.

GROUP 4
Make a song that explains the 3 R’s.
The three R’s – reduce, reuse and recycle – all help to cut down on the amount of waste we throw
away. They conserve natural resources, landfill space and energy. Plus, the three R’s save land and
money communities must use to dispose of waste in landfills. Siting a new landfill has become
difficult and more expensive due to environmental regulations and public opposition.
The First ‘R’ – Reduce - refusing to buy items that you don’t need, Buy durable goods that have long
warranty.
The Second ‘R’ – Reuse - You may either reuse those items for your own use or donate so that others can
use them.
The Third ‘R’ – Recycling- o recycle something means that it will be transformed again into a raw material
that can be shaped into a new item.

GROUP 5
Make a role play on how to apply 3 R’s at home.
Reduce=> make less garbage. For example, instead of buying juice boxes for lunch, buy a large container of
juice and use a washable single serving container to take it to school.
buy items in refillable containers
 Use cloth bag/eco bag/paper bag/native baskets instead of plastic bag, when you buy groceries.
Recycle=> turn an item into another useful item. For example, scrap paper from the classroom might be
turned into newspaper or paper bags when sent to the recycling plant.
Do not throw away used newspapers or used writing pads. Sell them or bring them into usable paper again.
Reuse=> Donate or sell re-usable items. Buy durable food/storage containers and reuse them instead of using
foil, plastic bags/wrap
