The document discusses the RNC 3820 radio network controller model developed by Ericsson, including its specifications, configurations, and comparisons to the RNC 3810 model.

The RNC 3820 has a smaller footprint, higher throughput, more flexibility in board placement, and supports both ATM and Ethernet transmission, while the RNC 3810 has looser expansion capabilities.

The three RNC 3820 models (Variant 30, 70, and 110) have different numbers of local cells, maximum Iub throughput, and maximum simultaneous users supported.

RNC 3820
The 3820 is the high capacity RNC model developed by Ericsson. Every
aspect of the node is enhanced, including the Subrack, fan units and
connection field. Differences between the 3820 and 3810 include:
› Fully optimised for data-heavy
applications with increased node throughput
› Smaller footprint, with the entire node
housed in one cabinet
› Much more flexibility in board placement,
with node expansion carried out at PIU
level rather then subrack level
› Developed high speed IP and also
supports ATM transmission.
› Subracks support ATM and Ethernet
internal switching

RNC 3820 - High Capacity Subrack

› New self-contained high powered

subrack, developed for use with the
RNC 3820 Node. Allows for increased
node throughput and subrack capacity
› Superior cooling facilities offset the
additional heat generated by the more
powerful processors in CPP 7.0
boards
› Will support 1600/2400W power
dissipation, with easy upgrade for
SCB-TF (which requires 2400W
dissipation)
› IP backplane connectivity to the new
C-MXB IP switching board is put in
place for 12 slots
› ATM backplane connectivity for ATM
boards to the SCB remains in place for
the HCS

SCB-DF
The SCB Dual Feed is developed for the new RNC
3820 High Powered Subrack. It features:
ƒ Dual -48V DC power feed to separate sections of
the HCS offering 2 * 800 Watts for distribution to
the back-plane. (Future increase to 3 * 800W with
SCB-Triple Feed)

ƒ Subrack power rail is partitioned with two groups

of 14 slots powered by each feed from SCB-DF

ƒ Backplane connections to the active and standby

C-MXB boards offer control and reset options

ƒ The SCB-DF cannot be used with the current

RNC3810 CPP subrack, as the access pins in the
backplane are not correctly configured. This node
continues to use the SCB3

ET-IPG
ƒ Function:
– The IP-based exchange terminal board, carries out
RTP/UDP/IP termination, and distribution of IP data to
hosts on other boards
– Acts as a gateway for IP data from the C-MXB,
packing it to AAL2u cells and sending on to the
processing boards

ƒ Connectivity
– ET-IPG has four Gigabit Ethernet BaseTx
connections. In general two are can be used, with 1+1
link redundancy. In the RNC 3820 these will not be
initially used, as the CMXB has 10Gbps IP-interface
functionality.
– The backplane has a further two 10GB Ethernet
connections for user data switched from the C-MXB

GPB 75
› RNC 3820 R1.1 is identified by product package number FAP 130 1871

› RNC 3820 R1.1 introduces the GPB75 - ROJ 119 2106/75

› The minimum Software Releases required for GPB75 boards are:

– W10.1.3.3 for Iublink over IP
– W10.1.3.5 for Iublink over ATM

› Mixed configuration (GPB65 and GPB75) is not supported with SW W10B

– New R1.1 nodes
– Full GPB65 -> GPB75 replacement

› Partial upgrade including a mix of GPB65 and GPB75 (also for mMP) is
supported in W11B

› The Active Patch Panel (APP) can be integrated to the FAN supervision Loop
(recommended but not mandatory). APP2 version and new cables required to
connect the APP with the fan units.

RNC 3820 Field Maintenance | RNC 3820 Maintenance | Figure 5-X

GPB 75 characteristics
› Processor Dual Core MPC8641D (GPB6 was equipped with MPC8641)

› CPU clock frequency slightly increased from 1.33 (GPB6) to 1.5 GHz

› Processing Capacity about 1.7 times

compared to GPB6

› 2 Ethernet connections to the backplane, for

future use in a High Capacity Sub-rack

› Max power consumption 65W (53W GPB65)

› Max Load Level 95% (per core)

RNC 3820 Field Maintenance | RNC 3820 Maintenance | Figure 5-X

GPB 75 characteristics
› mMP is the module Main Processor board, i.e the GPB that contains a single
core processor (up to GPB6) or dual core processor (GPB75)

› “RNC variant” naming convention (i.e C50, C60, etc.) doesn’t change with
GPB75 introduction, it always refers to the number of installed GPB boards

› Each GPB75 contain a dual core processor. Each core is defined as a Module
Controller and each Module Controller is realized by the following instances:
- Cell (RncLmCell)
- Ue (RncLmUe)
- ModOm (RncLmModOm)
- LoadControl (RncLmLoadCtr)

› RNCModules are therefore doubled on GPB75:

- 1 mMP board == 1 RncModule on GPB65
- 1 mMP board == 2 RncModules on GPB75

› The identity of the RNC module (RncModuleId) reflects the position of the
corresponding GPB board (subrack/slot). In addition single or dual core
configuration is indicated by the programinstanceid

SPB-3

ƒ 3rd Generation of the SPB, a board which is used for

user plane processing in the RNC. SPB3 is developed
for the RNC 3820 and to support high bitrates for HSPA
– SPB21 can only support up to 18Mbps
user rate, but SPB3 can support up to
50Mbps user rate

ƒ Board has five SPMs consisting of:

– PowerPC750 (Gx Low power) processor with
clock freq of 972MHz (366MHz in SPB21)
– 256MB SDRAM
ƒ Superior processing power leads to much higher
power dissipation (apr 70W)
ƒ The board is backwards compatible with previous
versions and can be used in low-power mode in the
RNC 3810 (3 of 5 SPMs active)

› Each SPB4 has three Dual Core processors: MPC8572E

› CPU clock frequency increased from 972 (SPB3) to 1500 MHz

› Two 10G Ethernet connections to the backplane (only ATM in SPB3)

› Max power consumption 100W (68W on SPB3)

- 75W if only 2 SP (SP number 3 can be powered up or down)

› Supports up to 84 Mbps single user peak rate (also SPB3 in W11B)

› SP memories increased:
- primary SDRAM from 256 MB (SPB3) to 1024 MB
- flash memory from 16 MB (SPB3) to 32 MB

RNC 3820 Field Maintenance | RNC 3820 Maintenance | Figure 5-X

SPB4 vs SPB3
› Each SPB3 has five Special Purpose Processors (SP) single core:
- each SP has only one device LM loaded
- each SP is regarded as a Cc, Dc or PDR device
- therefore 5 devices are supported on each SPB3

› Each SPB4 has three Special Purpose Processors (SP) dual core:
- each Core has one instance of Cc, Dc or PDR running
- each Core is regarded as a Cc, Dc, PDR device
- therefore 6 devices are supported on each SPB4

› “SPB4 Core” processing capacity is ~ 1.25 times “SPB3 SP processor”

› In addition a new LM, SpCoordinator, is introduced on SPB4:

- to handle SP common resources (AALx buffer allocations, CEP allocation..)

Note: in W11B the maximum number of cells supported per CC-device is

reduced from 192 to 140 for both SPB3 and SPB4

Board Placement Rules
› The subrack is expanded beyond minimum capacity by the addition of
groups of processing boards called “C-packs” & “O-packs” and
transmission boards called “T-packs”. While we have fewer positioning
restrictions than the RNC 3810 some rules do apply:

- A C-pack consists of 1 GPB and 2 SPBs As subrack may be only partly

filled with boards the number of C-packs in the node is the best capacity
indicator
- A T-pack consists of 1 IP-based ET-IPG board or 2 ATM-based SDH ET
boards. The first C/T-packs are included in the minimum node
configuration
- An O-pack consists of 1 GPB. Increase of control plane capacity can be
made with optimization packages. This is useful in e.g. voice dominant
systems.
- The SCB-DF/TF is always placed in slot 1/28 or each subrack. The TUB is
always placed in slot 2/27 of the MS, and the C-MXB is always placed in
slot 3/26 of each subrack.
- When placing the ET-IPG’s ensure that they are within one of the slots
that is backplane IP-switched by the C-MXB

Differences in Slot Allocation
ƒ Removal of the strict slot assignment for module boards, and removal of
the requirement to have a certain number of GPB/SPBs per subrack

ƒ Board functionality is combined in MP’s to reduce slot usage:

¾ GPB C1 – combining the functionality of the Central MP and the

O&M MP on one GPB
¾ GPB C2 – combination of SCCP, RANAP and RNSAP signalling
termination on one GPB (potentially high load here, but extra
processing capability in GPB65 should keep it below 80%)

Higher processing power and more memory on GPB65
